PHONO.
Saturday 5th March @ SAWA, Arundel Gate. 9pm-4am, £4/£5 entry.
First of all...WOW! The response to our launch night was way beyond even the most optimistic expectations, we were truly blown away by how many people turned up to party with us! Honest, it was proper mad. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Lets hope it's the start of something amazing....speaking of which, we'd best crack on with the next episode:
Phono presents:
CHRIS DUCKENFIELD
(Swag/Duckbeats/Extended Play)
Yes, yes, we know that Chris is a local lad, but to a certain degree that's irrelevant. Whilst on one hand we're hyped to be showcasing someone who's arguably Sheffield's most talented and successful DJ export; on the other hand, the guy's a badass and we'd want to book him regardless of where he's from!
Chris has been involved with house music since way back when, having worked in the Warp Records store in town and had early releases on said legendary electronic label. He DJed across Europe as part of Warp label tours and it was through the shop that he met Richard Brown, with whom he went on to form the all-conquering Swag production team.
Early Swag tunes came out on Terry Farley's Junior Boys Own, but experience in running his own labels, Primitive and Odori, led to the Version Music imprint being set up as an outlet for Swag's superbly left-of-centre material. It wasn't just the music either; record sleeves by The Designers Republic were worth having in their own right! Over a decade's worth of ground-breaking releases later (coupled with remixes of the likes of Blaze, Bjork, Moloko, Steve Bug and Metro Area) sees Swag rightly takes their place as truly inspirational figues in the development of house music in the UK.
Present-day Duckenfield is still touring the world, spreading his acid house gospel to the masses from Sydney to Madrid, regularly visiting great cathedrals of dance like Fabric, Panorama Bar and Back to Basics. His Duckbeats pseudonym and Extended Play label (co-owned with Jet Project) ensure fresh output is always round the corner, so we're glad to have found a gap in his busy schedule to join the dance at this month's Phono.
Now, it's a rare occasion that Chris does gigs in his home town nowadays, so this is set to be a very special occasion indeed for fans new and old. We can't f*cking wait!

As ever, support comes from the Phono residents dream team of Dan J, Alex Cooke, GrowMore and Dan Thorman over two floors, where we'll be treating you to some soulful funky treats in the downstairs bar to compliment the madness upstairs.
