A Feast of Americana at The Greystones
Anyone with a hunger for authentic Americana will be in luck at The Greystones, Sheffield on Saturday February 19th. A duo of duos at the heart of two leading bands from across the Atlantic will be leading their audience by the hand through sets of songs that have made them both favourites with Bob Harris. Duo number one features the songwriting heart of Chicago's Dolly Varden in the shape of husband and wife Steve Dawson and Diane Christiansen. Dolly Varden have built a reputation for soulful, questing songs trademarked by the harmonies of Steve and Diane; their songs will find a place in the heart of fans of Josh Rouse, Gram Parsons or early 70s Van Morrison. However, their most recent release "The Panic Bell" also recalls the new wave roots of the band's main protagonists.
St Louis based Magnolia Summer have a sprawling majestic sound that could sometimes seem like a marriage between early REM and Crazy Horse era Neil Young. The band is a constantly shifting community of like minded musicians rotating around the hub of Chris Grabau's songwriting. Their trademark is a stubborn commitment to the song in hand, and a ruthless disdain for anything that could be regardless as ornament for ornament's sake.
Not content with providing such weighty headliners, this tour also sees a national workout for Scotland's Wynntown Marshals who have also found the ear of Whispering Bob. Their sound gives away their love of Americana, but it is delivered with a very Scottish harmonic tone reminiscent of Teenage Fanclub.
Tickets for the show are available from http://www.wegottickets.com/event/101792 and the venue and cost £8 in advance or £10 on the door. The event is a collaboration between two longstanding promotional projects on the Sheffield scene, in the form of WagonWheelMedia and Four Rivers Promotions.
