View Full Version : Turkey, should be banned from football robbie 17-11-2005, 22:49 did anyone see that. absolutely disgusting. if that were England we'd be banned for 10 years spyro2000 17-11-2005, 22:58 I dont think they should be banned. Severely punished, but not banned. I doubt England would have been banned for the same thing either, as I have seen english scenes like this before and they havent ended up in a ban, but we will never know now. Meaks 17-11-2005, 23:02 I didn't know turkeys could play football? Or is it just with stuffing balls? Robbie Loving 18-11-2005, 07:00 Originally posted by spyro2000 I dont think they should be banned. Severely punished, but not banned. Neil warnock actually stated nothing would happen like this in england, this is from sufc site Neil Warnock has revealed that he witnessed first hand the amazing events and controversy that surrounded Turkey's World Cup play-off with Switzerland on Wednesday evening. The Blades boss was in Istanbul to check out a couple of potential targets ahead of the January transfer window when mayhem broke out after the Turks failed to qualify for next year's World Cup Finals. "It was a real eye opener," Warnock revealed. "It was a fantastic game but I've never seen an atmosphere like it in my whole life. It wasn't real, you'd never get anything like that in England. I've seriously never witnessed a couple of hours like it in my career." Despite winning the game 4-2, Turkey lost on away goals to the Swiss, who confirmed their place in the World Cup next summer. It was after the final whistle that the violent scenes were witnessed between the players, whilst the Turkish fans also vented their displeasure. Warnock refused to identify the targets he was watching in the fixture, again keeping his cards close to his chest: "I went to look at a few players, we have to look to keep every angle covered." Ive never seen an English player run from the pitch and boot an opposition player from behind in the crown jewels. so hard he had to go to hospital. we'd have been so banned from international football by now if it was us. Consensus from people I know is they wont get banned because Turkey is a Muslim country and the world being what it is at the moment. Ally68 18-11-2005, 17:03 Originally posted by robbie did anyone see that. absolutely disgusting. if that were England we'd be banned for 10 years I agree, although it was a Swiss player who kicked out first. He kicked one of the Turkish trainers. Although I do not condone his action, it was probably down to provocation why he did that. The Swiss team had to play under very intimidating conditions. As soon as the final whistle blew they knew they had to get off the pitch. That should not be allowed to happen that a team fears for their own safety just because they have won! When the Swiss team landed in Turkey they were stranded on the tarmac for a couple of hours because the baggage handlers wouldn't unload their luggage. Their team coach was then pelted with missiles as it left the airport. I was hoping the Swiss would keep their nerve and I am very relieved that Turkey won't be taking part in next years finals. Internetowl 18-11-2005, 18:26 Not so, there is now footage of the coach kicking out at the Swiss player first - seems Turkish TV omitted it on the first footage release. oops! fnkysknky 18-11-2005, 19:03 Yes they should be banned - we'd have been out on our arse. They always behave disgracefully. Macca 18-11-2005, 19:07 Have to say it was a unique moment in football, but if you had to pick a team to be involved..... BUT I was in Istanbul for the Champions League final, and I've never received such a warm welcome for a foreign away game. We were treated like kings by one and all. Do you think you would have been treated the same if Liverpool were playing Istanbul? Macca 18-11-2005, 19:12 Originally posted by Ally68 Do you think you would have been treated the same if Liverpool were playing Istanbul? I can only comment on my own experiences. The Gala and Fenerbache fans we met seemed to take ashine to us though. wolfman 01-12-2005, 11:59 hang on, why not the same towards the Swiss ? They're playing in Turkey with a hostile crowd and what does the moron do ? he goes and attacks a Turkish member of the coaching staff ! They were lucky not to have been lynched. Stupid, just plain stupid ! It could have something to do with the head of FIFA being a Swiss! Macca 01-12-2005, 12:10 Fromn the ever excellent Fiver - a daily football email from the Guardian. Meanwhile in Geneva, a steady stream of bruised and battered gentlemen of Turkish and Swiss extraction have been arriving at the dormant, baguette-stuffed volcano that serves as Fifa HQ to give first-hand accounts of the entertai ... sorry, disgraceful free-for-all that kicked-off at the end of Turkey's recent World Cup play-off defeat at the hands of Switzerland. "A total of 22 people were questioned as witnesses or testifiers," declared a menacing fat man in a blazer while stroking a white cat. "The results of the investigation will determine whether additional individual proceedings are brought against those concerned or whether further hearings and more evidence are necessary." In other words: "Turkey players Emre and Alpay, Switzerland's Benjamin Huggel and some backroom boys from both teams have had disciplinary proceedings opened against them, and we're waiting until the last of the Christmas brandy butter and eggnog has been digested before we decide what to do next." Nimrod 01-12-2005, 12:18 ITS ONLY A GAME!!!!!! The "football mentallity" is something I have never understood. The animosity between players, the incessant chanting of insults between supporters tells me that something is wrong with the sport. Sport should be fun, a pleasure to enjoy and relaxing. Football is none of these. The only good thing about football is we know where all the idiots are on a Saturday. Macca 01-12-2005, 12:23 Originally posted by Nimrod ITS ONLY A GAME!!!!!! Football is a passion, it's that simple. I'm not going to go on any further though as you may well be flaming the board. If not, I suggest you search for thread titles containing football as there was a discussion weighing up the pros and cons earleir in the year. Your comments, if genuine, are better off posted there. Nimrod 02-12-2005, 10:02 Oh well if nobody will take the bait then I'l have to go see if I can annoy someone elsewhere. Bye |
