View Full Version : What cheers you up, when you're feeling a bit blue
What things cheer you up when you're feeling a bit down.
I comfort shop - but only bargains - otherwise I get more down when I realise how much money I've spent!
Also like to have a nice long bath listening to some music I like!
Sure there's going to be lots of replies saying chocolate!
I like to get on my bike and ride up into the hills..stop and look at the view back...a good place to contemplate and take in some fresh air...makes me realise how lucky I am
hmm yes, I like to run places, in particular I like to stop at the hill above the bell hagg on manchester road - the view there is great, and from the bole hills is good too - really nice place to stop
Funky Dave 13-02-2004, 15:42 Go walking - There are plenty of nice places in and around Sheffield to take a stroll through.

Comfort shopping oh yes...and of course there is chocolate...
But Im of the problem shared is a problem halved persuasion, depending on what it is thats getting me down...good company  and Im sorted.
And if that doesnt help then very loud music with swearing in it! :headbang:
xxx
some good sex tends to cheer me up :o
chocs, spending sprees, shouting my head off, dancing to music in front of my mirror trying to convince me how great i look ( yes it does work sometimes...)
Babooshka 13-02-2004, 15:53 If you like running then head on up to Stannage Pole out at Redmires Reservoir. Stand there, take a deep breath and look around you. Makes you feel like you are the only person in the world (unless you are unfortunate enough to bump in to a load a school kids out on a hike or some enthusiastic ramblers...even in this case, people are so damn friendly in Sheff and keen to say 'hello', that this simple word from their unfamiliar mouths is enough to make you smile and realise that you DO exist and DO matter and people, no matter who they are, recognise your existance.
*Twinkle* 13-02-2004, 16:00 Chris always cheers me up when I'm down in the dumps! :P
Music, going for a drive and cranking up the tunes, thinking about the summer.. etc.
Eating breakfast in bed listening to Radio 4 :)
Reading (particularly Roald Dahl) to my niece
Sunshine
The view over Sheffield from the back of my house never fails to cheer me up. I love it here
Daveyboy 13-02-2004, 16:11 going for a drive into the peak district to watch the sun set i recomend that to anyone ;-)
and it that dosent work then lots of booze :-)

What if it's Chris making you down in the dumps?
Sam Miguel 13-02-2004, 16:28 Watching some Faulty Towers with my son - we must have seen every episode dozens of time but still howl with laughter.
Just acting plain daft or sending out practical joke letters to friends and family telling them that they have been picked to go on television and things like that.
Talking about and planning holidays.
A drive out into the heart of the Peak District always makes me feel great.
Writing something new and knowing it's good. Better still, getting it published and getting paid for it. I sent a book proposal recently to the publishers who did Fred Pass's book 'Weer's me dad?', and the faint hope that they might give me the go-ahead to write something similar is making me tingle.
*Twinkle* 13-02-2004, 16:31 What if it's Chris making you down in the dumps?
Then I kick his ass! hehe! ;)
Shopping for shoes and handbags usually does the trick :P
bulldog D 13-02-2004, 20:45 Fire up the old jalopy, fold the hood down, smell the petrol and shove the pedal to the metal. Slap some old tunes on, feel the wind through my hair and the sun on my face.
And then watch everybody else's pig sick faces as I cruise past em!
must be a bloke thing I guess!
:headbang: I put on System of a down at full blast
hiyabeing 14-02-2004, 02:16 MUSIC - VERY LOUD and being danced too - it's impossible for me to stay in bad mood - with music and dancing
Very simple me!!!!!
A bike ride down to Ladybower cheers me up when the weather is good. Otherwise I read a book to calm me down then watch some comedy dvd to make me happy.
mr craig 14-02-2004, 08:26 I'm lucky enough to have someone in my life who can always cheer me up no matter who down i'm feeling. She's just the greatest.:)

I did that all thursday!!! Nowt like some shouty sweary music when you're feeling Grrrrr
then I went out and got a bit sloshed, which is always good
I deal with my woes in a mature and constructive fashion as you can see! :P :P :P
In the Spring/Summer/Autumn - A cycle ride around the Ladybower Dams, sitting on the grass and reading in the Peace Gardens in town on a very hot day while people play in the fountains, a long steep walk in the derbyshire hills with a bit of climbing involved on a hot, windy day and looking down from the top as the sweat drips off me. :D
When the weather is crap - A long chat with a good friend, a cuddle with someone special (if I'm not single), going to the pictures.
I'm sure there's other things but I can't think of them at the moment. :)
i just get on my bike and ride as if i was in the tour de france
get back, have a beer, shower, and then play some music bliss!

jackthedog 16-02-2004, 08:26 Mine used to be heading out to the woods and pointing my bike down the maddest course available and letting it roll.
Drops, berms, jumps, concussion and blurred vision used to be my therapy.
Then I turned into a big puff :(
So now I like to drive out to Redmires and walk over to Stanage on a nice summers evening.
Ah, I feel all warm inside after reading this thread! :)
I agree with others that listening to some music usually helps. Either that or I put a Sex and the City video on or watch The Simpsons. Or have some Reiki or ring a mate who always makes me laugh. Or go for a drive or walk to somewhere beautiful, and lets face it, we're spoilt with beautiful scenic places round here.
Music and friends.
If I'm feeling down, I crank up the stereo put something nice and jolly on and have a good old sing song! Or I will get together with mates and tell them I'm feeling down and need cheering up and they usually sort me out.
Well it definitely looks like most of us make use of all the beautiful countryside on our doorsteps, I ran up to the path by the hallamshire golf course at the weekend, and up to ringinglow - and you can't help smiling at how lovely everything looks.
I'm getting all mushy! Back to work...
A big hug.
Once said i was a bit miffed to a mate in message, got one back that said hug, hug, hug. Made me feel much better.
I put a fighting game on on my Xbox, kicking the living ****e out of virtual people makes me feel loads better.
Failing that I just go on a massive rant about stuff that's gone off which has ****** me off, cursing and swearing, ranting and raving... gets it all off my chest, then eventually I calm down and all is good.
My cat purring. He's so innocent. He's a big orange ball of fluff and loves to be stroked. Awwwwwwwww
BrainThrust 17-02-2004, 01:28 As the wall of my house prove, punching something is one of my methods of venting frustration, but i have been know to think that a computer game where i can hack up things with a lightsaber was pretty good at relieving tension.
If i'm just sad, i find that reading in a quiet corner makes me feel better. there is nothing like absorbing yourself in the diogesis of a book or game to make you forget your troubles
if all else fails, it's amazing what a conversation with a attractive girl can do for your mood

sacredearth 04-02-2005, 08:46 I write poetry. It is a way of seeing the situation from someone elses perspective. Once it is there in black and white in front of you you can look at it and assess what is going on. That or loud music, singing at the top of my voice and dancing round the room. lmao :loopy:
Playing my guitar very loud.
Incidentally, where on earth did you dig this thread up from. It's nearly a year old.
Kristian 04-02-2005, 09:13 I like to sing when I'm feeling down to some cheery songs  I have a truly terrible singing voice, but that's not what it is about; there's something about singing that makes me feel happier. Endorphines I wonder?
The other thing that makes me feel better, is to watch a sad film. :suspect: Strange I know, but seeing someone else worse off than me makes me feel better about whatever I'm down about.

loud system!! now thats what its all about! :D either that or a bit of Metallica, or Megadeth :headbang:
although, that doesnt generally always cheer me up when I'm down, just gets me into a crazy mood... what does cheer me up is whipping out my leccy guitar, cranking my amp up and rocking out :headbang: or if I'm really down, playing a bit of blues soothes all the pain
Looking at holiday pics of having the time of my life with friends abroad! :D
Draggletail 04-02-2005, 15:43 Beer. It also cheers me up when I'm not feeling blue:hihi:
If in doubt, have a beer. Thats what I say:thumbsup:
Snuggling a beagle! There's nothing quite like a warm soft beagle!

This is so true.
People say alcohol is a depressant, but I find a drink always cheers me up!
Not that one too many wouldn't make me feel very depressed the next day, mind!

Getting a little tiddly with Miss Angel is always a pleasant experience and we always manage to have a bit of a giggle.....sometimes alot of a giggle. :)
I'd recommend alcohol too, but only because I don't react aggressively. It's not the same for everyone unfortunately.

Pauly, you're so right. Why do so many people get aggressive after a drink? All I ever do is dance wildly, tell people my innermost secrets and tell people I don't love that I love them, and we should meet up more often!
That said, I do sometimes tell people I do love that I love them - that's always nice too!

FairyNormal 10-02-2005, 22:32 I also love to go walking. The fresh air and scenery can't fail to make you feel better.
I also read my favourite book "Did I ever tell you how lucky you are?" by Dr Seuss. It never fails to make me smile as it tell you how you should be lucky that you're not one of the unfortunate characters in the book. Childish? Maybe, but it make me smile so I don't care. I also love to have a good old laugh at some of my 1970's/80's teen photo love annuals (Jackie, Blue Jeans etc). Those photo love stories and make up tips are priceless!!
Kristian 10-02-2005, 22:36 If I have got something on my mind, and need to think rather than forget, I like to go for a drive on my own.
If I try to think at home, I pick up a book, magazine, turn on the TV etc. If I go for a drive, I can't do this, plus I can concentrate while singing loudly to some cheesy CD! :D

Alcohol can take an effect as to what kinda mood you are before drinking... I have experienced this in the past... should i be feeling a little low the last thing i want to do is have a drink as i feel this can make things look twice as bad... plus i've always been told you tell the truth when under the unfluence... so yeah its sometimes a good idea to stay well clear lol
I guess this doesnt take effect for all people tho saying that... as i know some people like to have a drink to calm themselves down...

Nothing strange about that my ole fruit bat :D
When i'm feeling a little down... there's nothing a warm embrace from my Mr P cant fix... :D
Other things that make me happy are... to be snuggled up watching a DVD with a nice chilled glass of Lambrini... / listening to a nice CD whilst laying in bed snuggled up...
Really just being in one another's company does it for me :)
Awwww :P

StarSparkle 03-03-2005, 13:52 When I'm feeling a bit blue, there's nothing helps to lift it like a bit of loud music played very loud. Preferably with a good deal of swearing in it, as Mosherchick says!
Dancing round the room like a lunatic, or jumping up and down a lot, while singing along at the top of my voice - that'll usually sort me out. At the moment, I'm loving Green Day, although Nirvana's an old stand-by!
When in a quieter frame of mind, I like to get out and about and just enjoy the hustle and bustle of life going on around me, that helps to take me out of myself. As has been said already, it's lovely to receive a smile or nice greeting from a stranger. That can give a huge lift that can make all the difference to my mood, and make the world seem a friendly place again.
StarSparkle :)
I rarely ever feel 'blue'. If I do, I talk to my wife, or phone a friend/ close relative and the simple joy of warm conversation usually works. There are other solutions though, and the [frankly adorable] Starsparkle has a good one; leaping around, contorting oneself to thunderous music. How I would like to be a fly on the wall there!
Another solution is to hit the town with a crowd of friends, and take your mind off things. Humour, perhaps the greatest development of the human species, is essential. For me, there is nothing so enjoyable as a group of old friends in stitches about things. That is the real purpose of friendship, in my view; sharing the absurdities of life.

Never a truer word has been said timo! There's nothing in the world funnier than those moments when you're all connected in screaming tears-rolling-down-face sides-hurting belly laughter! Although, unfortunately, these moments are impossible to create or plan wilfully, they are the best kind of medicne I've ever had! :hihi:

Can I look, DT? :)
Beagle ears do it for me. Warm, velvety, soft, beagle ears. And a set of whiskers tickling your nose. And the wagging tail - fit to drop off when he's pleased to see you...
Can't ever see me owning a goldfish or cat. A rabbit maybe.... for Brude to play with :hihi:
