View Full Version : Dog Fouling
Moon Maiden 13-02-2004, 13:43 I thought it was illegal for dogs to foul the streets?
So why is it then that all around my sons school are piles of dog ****. It is absolutely disgusting. The rest of Hillsborough seems relatively free from this, I am sickened that it seems to concentrate round a nursery and primary school.
What on earth is going on?
Is this an isolated thing or do other people have areas where dogs owners should be shot?
Moon
PaulTansley 13-02-2004, 13:51 Sounds like the area should be closely monitored to catch the culprits.
I fully agree that these dog owners should take full responsibility for there dogs and be made to clear it up.
An on the spot fine should be imposed when caught.
Its difficult to police this kind of thing and there is no answer to the problem because these dog owners don't give a s**t pun intended about where there pet does it as long as its not on there property.
You should repoert this to the council and education department but be warned, do not hold your breath.
It is supposed to be on offence, but like all these things I don't know if offenders are ever caught and dealt with. Who is around to catch them? Can we make a citizens arrest if we see someone doing it? Maybe this is a question for Richard Eyre - although I don't think it is really a problem in the city centre.
This is one of my pet (no pun intended) hates. I cannot understand why some dog owners simply can't be bothered to scoop it up and dispose of it somewhere rather than just leaving it on the street for some unsuspecting person to tread on. It's disgusting and a real health hazard - especially to young kids.
Grass verges and parks seem to be a real problem where I live - maybe people think it's more acceptable to foul these areas. I'm sure it is an offence to foul these areas just as it is on pavements.
There is an elderly and quite frail chap who lives near me and he always scoops up after his dog. If he can be bothered why can't others?
Thats awfull i think people take this too lightley cause if a child
gets it near its face it can cause blindeness but what makes me so mad is that i do clean my dog crap up but iv noticed in hillsborough when theirs a football match the police dont clean up the horse dump do they (what a prime example)

Can't imagine putting dog s**t under my rhubarb.
You only have to venture 5 or 6 miles from Sheffield centre and the roads are covered in horse dung.
I quite like the smell of it in a funny kind of way, but dog crap makes me instantly vommit.

I'm open to correction on this, but I believe that horse manure is not nearly as likely to harbour disease as dog poo. Something to do with horses being vegetarian. After all, we put horse poo on the roses, don't we, because it breaks down quickly.
At one time, fresh horse manure was quite sought after. In the 50s and 60s, my uncle sold fruit and veg from a horse and cart around the Upperthorpe area. Whenever the horse dropped a load, women would come running out of their houses with a bucket and shovel to pick it up.
Yuck! How gross.
The things they got up to in t'olden days eh?
scatterheart 13-02-2004, 15:45 Crookes was particularly bad for this where I lived last year, but where I'm living now, right opposite my flat is a grass section with a foot path running through it, and all day and especially at night the people from the council flats opposite take their dogs out there and just stand there while they poo all over it, then go back in. I've never once seen any of them scoop it up afterwards
What makes me particularly angry about this is that every morning and afternoon tens of tiny children run and play all over this grass on their way to school and back :(
It disgusts me, but I don't know what I can do about it. This isn't the nicest of areas, and half of these people I wouldn't want to pass on a dark night, I am too scared to go and confront them. If I told the Council I can't see them doing anything about it. What can I do?
Moon Maiden 13-02-2004, 15:58 Dog fouling can be reported to the Environmental services on 0114 2037410
That is if you can get through!

geronimo 13-02-2004, 17:02 Like to bet that Moon Maiden and a few of you lot keep cats (sorry if Im wrong) cat types allways say that moggies are clean animals, when in fact the sand that I get delivered from the merchants is guaranteed to have cat sh.t in it the next morning, as will any soil that has been dug over. Stop deluding yourselves that cats are cleaner and therefore more veggy and self righteous social worky type stuff.
GEEERRROOONNNIIIMMMOOO
(No petsat all, only the human variety)
riddo7up 13-02-2004, 17:30 I think you'll find that horse manure carries tetanus germs which can be fatal, so don't let them kid you that it's harmless. Horsey people are not made to clean up their droppings because the horse is not a working class animal.
Moon Maiden 13-02-2004, 17:36 I said nothing about cats being clean animals - however there is a difference between allowing you cat to crap all over the street/gardens and allowing it to crap in a box in the cellar?
A dog will come when called, cats have answering machines
Moon Maiden
I agree with you here.
But what about woods, my dog goes in the undergrowth areas where only a dog can go, and has her dumps there, so the likely hood of someone stepping in it is slight.
Some of the dog mess in our area is from a couple of stray dogs, well not stray just keft to roam during daytime. we also have foxes and becuause they live in the bottom of our garden they poo on our lawn and it does look similar.
As for house muck, if you go to the coast it is illegal for them to allow the horse and traps to foul, they carry a bucket, and lots have like these sheets uner the house's rear for them to poo in.
Not sure about a solo ridden horse, it should be in the sense of cleaning it of your car, just as not nice as cleaning dog poo of your shoe.
Sam Miguel 13-02-2004, 19:56 I don't like dogs, they don't like me and I hate their crap even more.
The people who can fine the owners of dogs that are fouling in the streets are Enviromental wardens and the police.
I work with a enviromental warden and they do give out quite a few on the spot fines, what i'm not sure of is if they target certain areas for certain types of waste. As for the police don't hold your breath on them doing anything like that.
Sam Miguel 13-02-2004, 20:09 Dog crap really is the most disgusting substance known to personkind.
I hate it.

bulldog D 13-02-2004, 20:57 Anybody who owns a dog should show some responsibility for it, a poop scoop , carrier bag or old liberal democrat leaflet will always come in handy for taking the mess away.
Remember to wash your hands afterwards
scatterheart 13-02-2004, 20:58 I am tempted to photograph the culprits from my window, then the next morning photograph the little kiddies running in the same spot.
Then send it off as proof
Where we live, we have a large area of grass over the road. From dawn to the dead of night there is almost a constant procession (OK, maybe a slight exageration) of dog owners, from the estates at either end of our road, bringing their dogs to run around and poo on said grass. Of these I would say about 30% clean up after them, so full credit to them. As for the others, they just don't give a sh*t (but their dogs do). We even have it on our front garden.
Earlier this week I was in front of my house when a middle age lady - apparently totally oblivious to my presence - just stood their as her dog cr*pped about 6 yards from where I was standing. As she started to walk away I offered to fetch her a carrier bag, to which she just kept walking while saying something about usually bringing a bag, but she had her best coat on!
IMO, if you cannot be bothered to clean up after your dog, you should not be allowed to own one.
I did phone the council about having a poo bin installed, but they said - even though this is council land - someone would have to pay for the installation and upkeep of it!
I have a four year old, and I am very reluctant to let her play on this grass - as many other kids do every summer.
OK, rant over.

I know one or two people who are hated by dogs and believe me the dogs seem to have something worked out even if they are thick at times.

Follow 'em home and post it back thru their letter box. They'll be grateful for the return of their property.
LMAO!
Classic that one mate ;)
i own two dogs and i allways clean up after them.
the path i walk them down is thick with dog sh-t . and the road at the bottom is thick with horse ****.
my dogs love it, they eat as much as they can. but I wish the horses would eat the dog ****!
uncleheed 15-02-2004, 11:59 The people who annoy me the most are the people who bring their dogs onto other peoples streets and let it s**t there, then drag it home and their street is crap free.
I have caught people letting their dog crap on my front, and given them a verbal broadside and 1 piece of toilet roll to pick it up with. When you threaten to rub THEIR noses in it and not the dogs,(it's not the dogs fault, the dog just squats when it has to,)they soon pick it up.
Babooshka 15-02-2004, 13:08 Zozzer,
Do you actually allow your dogs to eat the horse poop ?
It sounds as though you positively encourage it !
Why on earth would you not drag your dog away from eating such a hideous pile of putrescence ?

I have thought of folowing them home and doing a dump on their living room carpet - or would that be going too far :)
garrence 15-02-2004, 15:53 I suppose a more conciliatory approach might be to knock on their door...
"Hello, my name is Fred. You've just allowed your dog to foul in front of my gate, I wonder if you would be civil enough to remove it"
"No."
"Well it's just that the path is dark at night time so my guests will be walking your dog's mess on to my carpet. Are you not bothered about dog mess on carpets?"
"No"
"I am. So what shall we do about it?"
"Move it yourself"
At which point you have both agreed that you should move the mess and that they are not bothered about mess on carpets.... they can hardly complain when, 5 minutes later, it lands through their letter box (make sure you get it on a trowel and fling it a good way in, they might not want it on their door mat).
I'd love to read a story about someone actually doing that.
If you have a dog there is no excuse for not clearing up after it.
There are no exceptions to this...none!
Plain Talker 15-02-2004, 18:20 I am a dog owner, and if my dog poops anywhere but on my own garden, i clean it up. (him pooping outside is rare.
it is a rare occasion I do not have pocketfuls of nappy sacks (2-300 for a quid. (not a huge outlay, is it?) which I use for the job.
I do not thank the dirty B*'s who let their dog poop everywhere for getting S* on my carpets, etc, so I have enough brains to woek out that others don't want my dog's muck on theirs.
I'd like to give a very special, personal thank-you to those brain-dead idiots who leave their dog mess all over. with a twelve-bore shotgun.
You see, for me it's much worse. when a dog messes in the middle of the street, it's often difficult for my wheelchair's wheels to avoid the mess. So I end up with it all over the wheels, and then the effing stuff gets all over my hands, as I have to push my wheelchair with my hands.
now THAT is what I call VILE!!!
Plain Talk
Dog muck is vile. Cat muck is much much worse.
You can at least see dog muck and attempt to dodge it. Cat s***
lurkes under the surface of your soil/compost just waiting for you to set your bulbs/bedding plants.
Sorry but I hate cats.
Plain Talker 15-02-2004, 19:07 how do I dodge the dog muck, though, in my wheelchair? (genuine question... how do I dodge it when the sh*t's across the footpath?)
I can't lift the wheels over the sh*t to avoid it... I can't levitate over it, and if the fuffing dirty b*s leave the muck there, and i do get it all ove r my wheels, it then gets all over my hands, too, which is incredibly unpleasant. I'm forced to use my hands on the wheel, i can't operate the chair by mind power, so wouldn't you agree, that's even worse...?
If it's on the wheel, then, by default, it's odds on that it'll get on my coat or jumper sleeves too near the cuffs,
or on the seat part of my chair.
honestly, it's awful!

How about DNA testing all dogs so that dog poo in the streets can be identified and the dogs owner forced to eat it. ;) :P
