They got mistaken for black rats during The Plague - that's very unlucky.

Funny thing.....black cats and the number 13 are also considered to be lucky! Unless Im just being backwards :loopy: which is so often the case!
Only superstition I believe in is not walking under ladders, never know what might land on your head! and all that builders bum clevage :o
Try and have a good day today y'all! I know I am

I've had the Black cat lucky/unlucky debate a few times.

I'm sure they are supposed to by unlucky, as is the number 13.
So 13 black cats crossing your path means you'll probably not make it to the end of the day.
Unless one bad luck sign cancels out the other...

I've heard that a black cat crossing your path is unlucky, especially if you trip over the little sod. Cats are always under your feet.

Nothing bad happened so far today, but I've got to go around town a bit today so who knows. :o

If bad luck omens cancel each other out, then do good luck omens cancel each other out???
Dont know that many good luck omens apart from the humble horseshoe, but it has to be held the correct way up...and apparantley catching a butterfly is worth 7 years luck! the perfect get out clause if you smash a mirror!
Not so lucky for the butterfly though :P :P :P

I am just unlucky everyday anyway.

Friday the 13th, 24th, 19th... what's the difference.

Supersitious Rubbish?

I would say that paraskevidekatriaphobia ( :) ) is actually not irrational at all so much as a self fulfilling prophesy when you note that:
Scanlon TJ, Luben RN, Scanlon FL, Singleton N.

Department of Public Health, Mid Downs Health Authority, Haywards Health, West Sussex
OBJECTIVE--To examine the relation between health, behaviour, and superstition surrounding Friday 13th in the United Kingdom.
DESIGN--Retrospective study of paired data comparing driving and shopping patterns and accidents. SUBJECTS--Drivers, shoppers, and residents.
SETTING--South West Thames region.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Numbers of vehicles on motorways; numbers of shoppers in supermarkets; and hospital admissions due to accidents.
RESULTS--There were consistently and significantly fewer vehicles on the southern section of the M25 on Friday the 13th compared with Friday the 6th. The numbers of shoppers were not significantly different on the two days. Admissions due to transport accidents were significantly increased on Friday 13th (total 65 v 45; p < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONS--Friday 13th is unlucky for some. The risk of hospital admission as a result of a transport accident may be increased by as much as 52%. Staying at home is recommended.

My guess is that the risk-averse amongst us stay off the roads in greater numbers.

...laugh if you will!
Some people are soooo superstitious, that if you believe so much in bad luck omens, that you will actually bring bad luck to yourself inadvertantly!
Take today for example, some people are going to be worrying so much about something bad happening that it will, probably through their own fault!
luck is just coincidence...thats my theory! :D

Thing is if you had an accident on Friday the 13th you may become superstitious about that particular date from then on, whereas if it happened on any other day it'd just be 'an accident' and you'd dismiss it as plain bad luck, rather than some cursed day of the month.

It's all in the mind I think. ;)

Maybe when enough people believe in a thing (in this case that Friday the 13th is unlucky) ... it takes on a power of it's own in the collective human conciousness ...

Not sure about that.

On the 22 June in both 2001 and 2002 I managed to do two unrelated injuries which both required surgery.

So i'm totally superstitious about that date now. I was even invited to a wedding last year that would have involved much motorway driving on the 22nd of June.
I declined.

It may be all in the mind, but your risk of a car accident may be increased by as much as 52%!

I find that quite astounding.

They're starting that new European Lottery thingy today, what's the betting nobody wins it given that it's the 13th?!

AND it's a double rollover on the proper Lottery tomorrow :D

Black cats can be lucky or unlucky depending on where in the world you live.
13 is unlucky I think because that is number usually needed for a witches coven. Magick and the occult aside, can you imagine the backlash of annoying thirteen women?

Black cats have always been considered lucky to my knowledge. I have one! And...despite it being the 13th...I am having a pretty good day!
