View Full Version : Fifth Gear or Top Gear ??
How many of you Top Gear fans watch Fifth Gear on Channel 5?
I've only seen it a handful of times and it's exactly the same as Top Gear except they have a woman presenter in it. . . the whole format is the same, numpties & car geeks stood around whilst the presenters try to force a laugh from them as they decribe the cars with passion.
Personally, I prefer Top Gear as I've sort of grown up watching it, from the old days when Tiff Needell was on it. I think C5 should have been abit more adventurous and made theirs into more of a roadshow - in different cities each week etc.
What do you think?
I much prefer Top Gear, you can tell the show must have a much bigger budget with some of the things they do. What better way to test a new super-mini than get 10 of them and play 5 a side football!
Personally it's a time filler if i watch Top Gear. the programme could be good, could be worth watching if, unlike on the one i just saw last night, they bothered to show off cars that normal folk could buy, not some stupid poncy car that cost 230,000 quid.
Fifth gear is pretty much the same "look at the amount of donuts you can do in this without ripping your tyres to shreds"
Yes, they have the old presenters from Top Gear, Tiffany Dell :hihi: and that posh bird.
as i've said if they did a show that was useful instead 3 berks driving really fast, burning rubber they'd be great.
The show could do stuff about LPG/CNG/BioDiesel and other alternate fuels (how to go about converting, buying/selling 2nd hand, etc). Motorbikes would be good too.
*vanessa* 16-11-2005, 11:36 I used to watch it when Tiff and Quentin were on, Vicki Henderson-Butler spoilt it for me, but now she's gone, I'm back drooling over Richard Hammond!
Never seen fifth gear, and don't intend to.
Vanessa
I am not really into cars, especially not sports cars...who cares if it can do 200 miles an hour - where can you go that fast?!
However, Jeremy Clarkson makes things interesting, and I like the banter between him & his co-presenters.
As to women presenting car programmes - NOOOOOOO

I caught 5th gear for the first time on Monday and wasn't impressed. The woman presenter was seeing what it's like to drive at high speed if your blind (eh?) and she was blubbing and crying like, well, a woman.
Yet, women do this every day when they're looking in the mirror as they apply their make up, or look out of the side windows at the shops with pretty dresses in. :D
Joking aside, Top Gear has recently got a lot of coverage in magazines lately of it's growing popularity in women.
I think the team they now have are the finest for many, many years - primarily because they are all on screen together and have some great banter.
I used to like "Driven" on C4, but that's not been on for a couple of years.
beansfeast 16-11-2005, 12:34 Vicki Henderson-Butler.... drool! :P

Count yourself lucky you missed last weeks' episode of Fifth Gear; that was much, much worse.
They spent half the bloody show attempting to make a Lotus (http://fifthgear.five.tv/jsp/5gmain.jsp?lnk=401&featureid=108&show=s8e5§ion=On%20track) hit 200mph.
What a waste of time that was

That'd be because of the unique way the BBC are funded. ;)
Personally, I like any program with VBH (and without Clarkson) in it. :D

Surely you preferred William Wollard? ;)

All of these are entertainment programs and they would be a bit boring if they cut out the fun stuff and the fast, expensive cars. It isn't meant to be 'useful' - it ain't public service broadcasting :)
I rather enjoyed seeing the gross BMW M6 getting a complete spanking from the lithe Porsche 911 on the Isle of Man :D

Maybe you should watch it because Tiff Needell and Vicki Butler-Henderson have moved to Fifth Gear.
I met VBH at a launch party once and despite being just as "jolly hockey sticks" as she appears on TV, she was really nice.
It was also great to meet a woman who genuinely loves cars and can talk about them with authority.
Top Gear for me every time :)
The team are head and shoulders above the 5th gear team and the races across land and sea are awesome. Add the fact that i'm LMAO every time Top Gear comes on and it's plain to see it is the best of the bunch :)
I had the 'privilege' of watching last weeks 5th gear when they were trying to get a Lotus to go 200mph. Well.... I say i had the privilege. In reality i spent half an hour knowing it would never work and i think the 5th gear team knew it all along too.
They still went ahead and spent almost half an hour covering it. Top Gear would have spent 5-10 mins on it and made me LMAO about it along the way.
pete_jim 18-11-2005, 09:26 Top Gear for me. You can have more fun with cars looking around a used car lot on Bramall Lane than watching Fifth Gear though I do think VBH is a good presenter.
Skatiechik 18-11-2005, 09:37 I only used to like top gear for the opening credits. When they wound Garfield down  Unfortunately they have got rid of that nowadays.
I can't even drive and I watch Top Gear.
fnkysknky 18-11-2005, 18:17 Top Gear is great - I know loads of people who watch it who aren't really bothered about cars they just find it amusing :)
Annoni_mouse 18-11-2005, 18:51 As a commited "petrol head" it has to be top gear every time.I find 5th gear just a bit too worthy(although to be fair i havnt watched it in a while).Top gear just has the right blend of humour and info-if only theyd do away with the "star in the reasonably priced car":gag:

Yup, I'd be one of those.
But I don't know you. Hard Luck. ;)
I am glad some other people find it funny too. It seems I can come out, without fearing ridicule now!
So what did you think of Top Gear on Sunday then with Leo Houlding racing the RS4 up the mountain?
Leo's a Sheffield nutter I'll have you know :D
carcrash 22-11-2005, 15:35 I've met leo a couple of times in the past. Complete lunatic.
Top Gear won an Emmy yesterday.http://media.guardian.co.uk/broadcast/story/0,7493,1648144,00.html
