I am looking to trace both sides of the family tree, I have come across many web sites that are very expensive and complicated.
I could do with somethig either on or off the net to find it out.
Can you help?
try this http://www.genesconnected.co.uk/
Personally, I do not think it is a good idea to put your info up.
Your mother maiden name is used as a security for many banks.
Who knows?, ID theft is probably possible via this site.

If you choose to post your family tree / info on Genesconnected.co.uk Your info is not on view to everybody, you have to give permission for people to view your tree, hence mothers maiden name. Also you need to be a subscribed member to be able to directly contact other people for information or view trees.
As for free genealogy websites try these 1st:
The mormons website has the 1881 online census for free
www.familysearch.org
Free BMD (Births Marriages and Deaths)
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com
Will give you all uk registered Births Marriages and Deaths from approx 1837 to early 1900's all for free, however its not 100% complete but additions are regulary added, so keep checking.
most others sites are pay or subscription sites, but depends on how serious you are at finding out. But if on a tight budget, join genesconnected and post search requests on the Records Office section on the message board and people will only be too happy to do look ups for you.
Subscription / Pay websites:
1901 uk online census:
www.census.pro.gov.uk
Pay to view site, you need to buy vouchers from Local Library or use credit card, but recommend vouchers .
1891 uk online census:
www.ancestry.co.uk
Subscription based site, worth it if your serious
1837 to 2001 uk registered Births Marriages and Deaths
www.1837online.com
Pay to view by credits but complete. Would recommend as found lots of info myself.
Thanks for those Mega_monty and John.
My familys history is long and complicated as my dads side originates from Russia and travels through Europe during the revolution then settling in Belgium, finally coming over to england during the war, this is why I feel it's going to be tricky.
My mums side a bit easier, as far as i'm aware they're from roman times and settlled Britain.
thanks again

First talk to all living relatives.
Then go to Sheffield Archives on Shoreham Street to trace everybody born/married/died since 1837.
Then buy the appropriate birth/marriage/death certificates which contain a lot more info. They did cost £7.50 each - 3 years ago.

Women are difficult to trace.
They foolishly get married and change their name. :(

Yes you can search BMD indexes free as above, but that is dependant of being able to get there or have the time to attend, and also theres nothing better than working in the comfort of your own home.
You can order BMD cerificates online at:
www.col.statistics.gov.uk
If you know the GRO Reference
Full Certificate of birth marriage and death (standard service) £7.00 each
If you dont know GRO Reference
Full Certificate of birth, marriage and death (standard service) £11.50 each
i've started a family tree and up to now its pretty easy. All my family are from sheffield so that cuts alot of searching out. www.ancestry.co.uk is a good site, you do have to pay for it but its well worth it i'd say. good luck anyways
Yes ive tried church of the latter day saints family search ,genes connected and all the others, but my favourite by far is the 1837 on line one.
ive just ordered 2 certificates from them Gro.
its very fascinating i cant leave it alone.
you buy points to view records then give them the index and order the certificates on line.
some of the very old registrations though are obviously hand written and not very clear but majority are ok.
ive found loads of my ancestors on it all ready and ive only been on it 3 nights.
i better give it a rest though now as im getting carried away
and it'll cost me a fortune.
