View Full Version : Audio tape slipping - tape player or tape at fault?

Recently, I've been using my Denon tape deck regularly and it hadn't been cleaned for a while - when I was given it in 2004, I gave it a clean using ichro-wotsit-a-phyl... worked well, but last weekend I gave it a clean as I'd been using it to copy CDs onto tape for a friend who only has a car player.

Ever since it sounds as if the tape is about to slip - at the beginning of the tape (just after the leader tape, and then 60% through the tape) - yes I have very few tapes, but all be it I need to keep them - is it the player or the tape - it does it on some tapes... it doesn't knacker the tape, just sort of 'oo-yer', within the voice and continues as normal - could it be to do with the cleaning - I've listened ot it with the cover off, so I could see the transport, and the right spool looks to be slowing up and speeding back up again - annoyingly the previous owner never used it, it also looks as if something's going on with the tape above the playback head - the capstan seems to be working as usual...

Is it chuck out time?

Cheers.

It sounds to me like the motor is wearing out, with 99% of tabe decks being belt driven, the belt could be slipping or wearing out, and no longer be strong enough to spin the tape, this happens with alot of rewinding and fastforwarding cause it puts more strain on the motor and belt..

A similar thing happens with VCR's too. I would suggest playing the same tape in another deck, and see if it does it in the same spot, if not, then its confirmed as the deck..

As a last resort, you can get a nice tight elastic band and replace the belt, it has to be one of the DARKER types (the light ones are slippy, dark ones have more grip) and that should work if its tight enough, and the right sort... I did this with a deck i have bacn in 2001 and its still perfect to this day...

If you have any more questions, dont hesitate to ask.. :)
