I have to say, since we started using BY broadband about 6 months ago, I've been very happy with them.

And even more so now!

Like hitchhiker I've had no complaints about using BY broadband but it's even better now that I know my 1mb is getting upgraded to 4mb for free

You can use a speed test (http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp) to see an approximate speed you are getting.

Typical isn't it...

We look at buying a house in Hoyland (south barnsley) and find it's not cable provided and the speeds are going to go up at the same time..

To add insult to injury, I'll be paying £30 a month for the remainder of my 12 months whilst getting none of the benefit...

So, it can always be worse... :P

For all these who said they have no complaints about BY.. heres something to make you think, though I realise were 1 in thousands, but still...

As you may all know, living in sheffield, the council have been updating peoples houses, including re-doing the walls outside..

Once the council had finished our external wall, we noticed our internet started dropping out, and being alot slower than usual..

we reported this to BY, and they said there was nothing wrong, as all ping tests are fine.

it kept dropping out and eventually after 3/4 phone calls, they decided to send out an engineer, he took a look at the PC and modem, said there was no trouble, left us a little thing on the back of the modem he said should help...

It made it worse, so i removed it, The dropping out settled down a little, though the speed still wasnt at its peak, so i phoned up again, after another 2/3 phone calls, another engineer came out..

again, took a look at the PC, and modem, and said nothing was wrong, and he would check the cable out side "YAY" I thought, someone whos gonna actually spot/fix the problem..

he wondered out side, took a look, cant see anything wrong... why?? cause he cant even see the cable cause of the new wall(s) the council have built etc.. he said when he got back to HQ he would put a Watch flag on the line, so if something happened, they would know.

I heared nothing back for about 1 month, and it still kept slowing down, and on the odd occasion dropping out...

I have since phoned thier help line about 8 times so far, and a few of them were outages in this area, which i can accept.. but other times they just run a few ping tests and say theres nothing wrong...

the last phone call I made, i explained all this to them, and they said there was no watch flag on the line, and everything pings fine so it must be ok now..

well, its not, I have been running tests of my own, regular, every day, at random times of day, and to www.bbc.co.uk (which is what BY helpline tells you to ping to) we ping about 70ms average, and our highest has been over 150ms...

I have a bandwidth monitor on my PC also, and I have noticed that when it slows down, it seems to be the UPLOAD thats droping out, not the whole connection... I have explained this to the guys on the BY help line and they still insist there is nothing wrong with it...

the second engineer that came out said we may need a 're-pull' and reinstallation from scratch... because the cable may be damaged slightly..

But can I get them out to do this?? nope...

any ways, up to this point we have been reasonably satisfied with the service... Its just I feel as though they wont believe me, or listen to me as to what the problem is, even after telling them what THIER engineers told me..

i have 750k blueyonder broadband what speed will mine be upgraded to? 2mb is it or higher?

21steve
28-11-2005, 12:40
no you dont you have 1mb.

it was upgraded again from 512 - 768 and then 768 - 1mb.

so you will get upgraded to 4mb.

unless you use a set top box then you stay at 1mb

Its nothing to do with fairness. The STB's are restricted to 1 Meg..

If you have the net via your STB, then all you need to do is phone up and ask for a standard conenction.

Just follow the wire and see where it leads. Failing that, if you have a Telewest phone, dial 151, option 3, then option 1, and ask them.

10mb, 384
4mb, 384

Anyone see anything un fair there?? we'll need the full 384kbps to send the packets back when downloading at full 10mbps (1.25MB/s) and that will cause our speed to be effectivly slower... tbh, 10mb should be ATLEAST 512, (Most of the EU and US, 10mb is 768kbps upload, infact, some 5mb's are 1mb upload..)

Why is the upload so crap? Whats the big deal with upload?

LL200
06-12-2005, 06:54
how is it unfair? it may not be high enough (in your view) but its hardy unfair. And its only not high enough for those people running ftp/web servers and/or downloading pr0n and such. Which, although not banned, they're hardly going to make it easy for you.

viewing the web, streaming video, playing online games, download apps - none of these need a high upstream speed.

on the other hand, i run a webserver and download... erm... windows service packs and i'd love a 1mb upstream, but i'm just being pragmatic.

Ghozer
06-12-2005, 15:36
playing online games benefits a hell of a lot with a bigger upload o_0

streaming video it would help, but not needed, viewing the web, you dont need 10mb for, downloading things, and download apps, the upload would also benefit..

20th was the date for Broadband, but yes Teleport is still coming out around the same time. Teleport will be out sometime in Decemeber, anytime after the 14th.

I will need to check on the Broadband date, i know there were some difficulties which may have pushed the date further back.

p.s. when Teleport does come out, DONT phone in asking for your Teleport P.I.N., its 1234

just wondering spyro (being as you work for telewest) will they ever cap their service? It would be unfortuinate and disapointing if they introduced faster broadband and then slapped a cap on it!

also do you know a kelly smith? works at the, attercliffe telewest place?

Yes I know of a Kelly Smith, not personally but I know who she is if that makes any sense.

There are no plans on a cap on the broadband services BUT, I now NTL have some caps on their service, so who knows what may happen once the Merger finalises :(

Officially I work in Customer Care, but ive been there for years, so Ive been trained in many areas including blueyonder tech support, customer relations and sales. So while those around me in my dept are taking purely Customer Care calls, I get the other types of calls routed to me also to deal with.

To be honest I hardly download anything anymore so the increase to 4mb isn't going to make that much difference as most of the time I'm only browsing anyway. It's just nice to have that extra bandwidth for the few occasions I do download large files.

3/4 years ago I'd have given my left leg for a 4mb connection as I was downloading gigs a week :)

well, they did otherwise people would be leaving in droves to other providers which have higher speeds for less dosh.

what most people are p*ssed off about is the lack of information and the broken promises.

how hard can it be for BY to update the 'even faster' page? even if it says 'first quarter 2006'. at least we'd know where we stand.

and, as spud says, how is it fair that some users get 10 and others get 2, for the same money?

Must admit that i agree with LL200 on this one, as per usual we are one of the last areas to get the "upgrade".
It would be nice to even see when its going to happen to our area without seeing all the others getting it and we are still stuck here waiting in limbo to find out whats happening

Exactly. Its free. Nobody made them do it. And complaining about it here isnt going to make it happen any quicker.

20-12-2005, 17:15
no, no-one MADE them do it, only market forces made them do it, they don't want to loose customers to other suppliers who offer greater speeds for less monthly cost, so its a case of having to really, however the main issue here is the decided lack of communication that we have got from blueyonder

Im grateful blueyonder are doing the upgrades, but why lead us on.
I can't remember the exact term for what i'm feeling so i'll TRY to give an example.

here goes...

your 10 years old and its christmas morning, you unwrap your pressie, and WOW its a brand new xbox 360, 10 times faster than the current xbox. You set it up, and are just about to turn the power on, and bam. mummy says your not playing it till feburary, even tho its a gift that was promised on christmas day.
instead your stuck playing your basic xbox. while all along your cockney friends are having a blast playing perfect dark 0.

But when feburary comes you can bask in the glory of amazing graphics, and exelent gameplay. and laugh at mr cockney, who has grown tired of what the console has to offer.

telewest is mummy.
your the little kid.

not a great example, but........

but........ it works -- quite a good one actually,

Telewest DID Promise December, If ppl have been checking the site (like me) since August -- as-soon as sheffield or yorkshire appeared on the list, it said Mid-End December 2005 for our estimated dates...
then they changed it to what it is now..

though with the problems we have been having (and they still say theres nothing wrong with it) - ill be surprised if we even get the full 10-mb once its done..

I've been paying for our connection for three years now. Can I get my money back:D.

And.........

Why does the BY website state that to use BY HSI you need a minimum spec machine of Win 98se or Mac? Why no Linux (which connects to BY perfectly well)?

Because their tech support doesnt support Linux. You can use it, but if it goes tits up, youre on your own.

blueyonder is a cable isp so doesnt go over bt lines and doesnt suffer from distance.

Whyever not though, as they support Macs, you'd have thought they'd support all flavours of *nix (especially now Linux is being used in/by some local authorities)?

The area above sheffield on the blueyonder upgrade list says the upgrade will not be completed until end of january so doubt sheffield's upgrade will be done until february sometime, telewest are liers saying that it would be done in december they could lose quite afew customers to other companies for misleading them :hihi:

Rather a puzzling comment.

If you feel the company are so bad, why are you so eager to get this free speed upgrade?

Surely no amount of speed can make up for poor customer service, and if you feel so hard done to by them, why not just look around for another provider?

Personally I've always found their service very good. I had a hiccup over usernames when I moved house, but on the two occasions when I've needed Telewest's help (builders cutting through the cable!!) they've been extremely helpful, and very prompt with repairs.

You've never worked with computers before then obviously.

1. The information we were receiving on here was not official and was internal information... You were lucky to see it at all.

2. You're complaining about a free upgrade... so, if you're really serious about wanting to go elsewhere then what are you still doing using them and whinging about it... vote with your feet.

3. I'm faced with HAVING to move to an ADSL provider and frankly I don't want to because cable has been very good this past couple of years... Why you are so darned keen to move to ADSL with all the problems that virtually every ADSL user reports on the "bargain" packages and a number of supposedly good ones is beyond me.. but that's your option.

Bottom line... you'll get the upgrade eventually and then you'll quit whining...

A sense of proportion wouldn't hurt though... This isn't a problem, it's a niggle.. a minor one at that... You haven't died, not lost your job, etc... Those are "problems", so gain a sense of proportion and if it's really that big a deal, move..

Yep... and then updated. Most people have been reacting to this internally communicated target that isn't shared publicly except by employees. Not that I'm complaining but it was never "official".

Don't know about you but I was surprised that they managed to keep it partially to schedule. Each point will have had problems and issues that stalled subsequent upgrades so I'm hardly shocked there was a delay.

Then theres "Yorkshire" listed under that (which is us( so you'll be looking mid-end Feb 2006

Just got to mention at this point - hopefully when the new 'improved' speeds etc are reached that the levels of reliability are kept the same - I'd rather have my current slower (1meg) connection which is seldomly not available briefly to a faster but more unstable connection.

Hi spyro2000

Since you are working in Telewest ,can you please find out whether telewest has got any cable broadband connection in the broomhill manchester road area.. it seems telewest is not offering any services in that area after i typed in the post code..which is bad news... we are quite eager to have cable braodband in our house and if telewest can sort out connections to this area..that would be great news to us and all the people in this area . Telewest can get loads of customers here.. . Can you sort out this issue and let me know the details... please.. cheers

srksheffield: give them a call rather than using the online checker. its more accurate. you'll probably find that if you haven't got cable then you'll never have cable (or not for the foreseeable future).

on the subject of the thread, i've heard on the grapevine (for what its worth, which is nothing) that our next date to get our hopes up on and subsequently dashed is the end of jan.

roll on summer.

I doubt it will be the end of Jan either to be honest. All they have told us is that it 'should' be the 1st quarter of 2006, but they havent even got a date for the completion of the work yet. The work and maintenance needs to be completed before the actual upgrades can happen, and this can take sometime.

srksheffield - I doubt there is any cabling in that area, but if you want a definite no, ahem, I mean a definite answer, then call 08009530002, option 1, then option 2, and ask there. They will double check for you.

Common to the two you mention and a few others that aren't so great is the (lack of) cost - you get what you pay for! If you're more interested in getting a good service than saving a few pence, try a higher quality ISP. I used Zen when I had adsl - it cost a little more than the Pipex connection I had previously, but was much, much better :)

That's your option... personally I think you're being a tad myopic.

1. They've just been taken over by NTL so chances are management are all over the shop and who knows it's possible that NTL are actually the ones who have slowed things down.

2. They're upgrading the whole network and lord knows deadlines are always being lost in the smog of reality once the first few are done.

3. Has it actually occured to you that they may have hit problems with the service and decided to deal with these problems before continuing with the upgrades. From what little I've read of the newsgroups there does seem to be some issues with speeds not matching expectations.

4. You simply are not going to get the same service with any ADSL providers as you are with telewest..

I do have one small proviso in all of this though... If customer service becomes one with NTL then I'd be joining those walking out the door.

This has never been a "lie" though, just optimistic deadlines and poor communication. Frankly I'm just amazed people are getting so worked up about it.

A sense of proportion instead of the whole knee jerk reaction would help peoples blood pressure I'm sure..
