Hi All

When I got my computer it was registered to 'Compaq_Owner', which is really annoying.

I've managed to change it so on my start menu, it displays my name at the tops, but when I go into task manger or shared documents it still says 'Compaq_Owner'.

Any way of changing it??? I've tried to rename it using conventional methods, ie right-click, but that doesn't work. I've also tried formatting the computer, but because I don't have a proper XP cd, only a recovery cd, it doesn't ask for user data when installing XP.

I'd appreciate your input. Cheers

Go to start>Settings>Control Panel>User Accounts

You should be able to add a new account, and then delete the compaq_user one!

The theory is sound. I have done it before. You cant rename an active user (i.e. one you are logged on as) so the easiest way is to make a new user with administrative rights, and then log in as that user, and then delete the old one..

I think?

I think i have mis-understood the initial post!

*goes to re-read!*

EDIT:

Yeah - If you are just wanting to change the name on the start menu/login screen, my way will work..if you want to change the actual registered to name in my computer etc then..err...you can only do that during signup i believe?

I'd appreciate your input. Cheers I had the exact same problem when I bought my pc from Comet, and it was showing me as C (for Comet), although I changed the user profile.

What I did was to open a new administrator user then, using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard (To open the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.), I transferred everything into the new user.
