View Full Version : Anyone Into Muaythai? BarbieGyal 12-02-2004, 10:17 Is there anyone who does Muaythai and trains at wicker camp? Mike 12-02-2004, 11:46 I do - was going loads up 'til xmas, but not been down there yet this year. I've got a private lesson with Darren next week, and then going to do my first grading after that - then I can go into the intermediate classes.... :) GazB 12-02-2004, 11:56 I have a lesson with Christian on Saturday. BarbieGyal 12-02-2004, 21:01 Kool!! U both go wicker camp??? There isnt alot of girls in my sessions its mostly guys...but i dont mind really. Christain really puts you through your paces.....i enjoy christains sessions, he really makes you work hard but he also makes it fun :). Darren is really good aswell, i was having trouble with the "headkick" and he really helptd me. What is your favourite weapon in muaythai?? Ur elbows, fists, knees,or shins??? Mike 13-02-2004, 06:32 Yeah, in all the classes I've been to there's been about 1/4 women to men - watching the intermediate classes that are on before, there's only about 5 women doing it. Still, in my JuJitsu classes there's only one woman, and she's often not there. Favourite weapon? Not been doing it long enough to really know yet, but I'd say leg-kicks and straight-knees are probably going to be the most effective for somebody of my skill to pull off. I imagine that most people who don't know it's coming will be going floorwards after a big leg-kick! I reckon the best instructor I've had so far is Trix. tombodojoj 13-02-2004, 19:36 wicker camp is cool, christian does know how to make people suffer the good way, leg kicks no matter what level you are at will always be one of the best things to do, i left doing it there because it seems like hardly anyone is there 2 train, it turned into a lets try and pull all the chics and show how big a set of dicks we are, (not the teachers, but i would have thought theydv seen) one of my mates still trains there and says mick has been taking the monday lessons, and he is really enjoying it because there is nothing like a master to teach you. Wisey 16-02-2004, 16:12 I've been going a few months but missed the last grading before xmas, so will hopefully do the next. Can only really go one night a week but would possibly be looking to split some private lessons if anyones interested? Mike 16-02-2004, 16:31 I missed that grading too coz my Ju-Jitsu gradings fall on the same day....but am doing a private grading soon, it's only something like a fiver more expensive and you don't have to stick to the scheduled dates. You need to have a private lesson before you can do a private grading though. Baldyshef 22-02-2004, 18:28 Forgive me but what and where is wicker camp? tombodojoj 22-02-2004, 22:31 it is a muay thai club situated next to the hyde park tram stop, cool place:) BarbieGyal 24-02-2004, 13:48 It at Clarence works upstairs (I think its called clarence works....lol) anyway its on effingham road. GazB 24-02-2004, 14:13 Originally posted by BarbieGyal It at Clarence works upstairs (I think its called clarence works....lol) anyway its on effingham road. How have your lessons been going then? Do you do group or private lessons? BarbieGyal 24-02-2004, 15:57 I go to the group lessons 3 times a week in the evenings and sometimes, not all the time go the bag lessons in a morning. What about you GazB? Rurouni_Roni 25-02-2004, 12:57 muay thai is great. I study kickboxing which basicly is muay thai but i live in America so lol Mike 26-02-2004, 17:15 Kickboxing and Muay Thai are pretty different. Ok, so both use kicks, but you can't use elbows and knees in kickboxing (or grappling?), so that's half the MT armoury gone already. Anyway, got my first grading tomorrow - it's gonna hurt! tombodojoj 26-02-2004, 19:27 and the way you execute the kicks are different, so if you are going around saying mt is kick boxing, im afraid you will be unprepared and therefore will get the shi kicked out of you because you wont be expecting mt. BarbieGyal 27-02-2004, 12:56 Yeah i think muaythai is different from kickboxing. Muaythai you can use elbows, knees, and also you can use grappling and like kinda wrestling with the knees and that, which i dont think you can use in kickboxing. Anyway good luck for your grading, use should pass it its easy...word of advice from me....make it look as if your giving it 100% put some grrrrrrr into everything becasue mick isnt looking for quantity hes looking for quality and 5 really good press ups is better than 10 crap press ups. Muaythai is the fighting spirit. :-) GOOD LUCK! BarbieGyal 27-02-2004, 13:01 yeah tombodojoj dats true. Did you know when muaythai first started out, kickboxers thought they scould kick the crap out of muaythai fighters???? and what append was the kickboxers had NO idea how to kick correctly to the shins!!! they was only doing body kicks. The thai fighters soon realised this and when ever they fought a kickboxer they went straight for there shins, most of the fights were over in the first round from the thai fighters breaking the kickboxers shins!!!! Muaythai is the most devistating martial art!!! Mike 27-02-2004, 13:17 Thanks BarbieGyal - I passed with 75% :) I'm well knackered now though! Glad that's out of the way so now I can move out of the beginner's classes at last. ... BarbieGyal 27-02-2004, 13:20 Mike, Wot do you look like?? I might know you? Mike 27-02-2004, 14:05 I never know how to answer that question! 5'10", close cropped brown hair, 36, errm, wear blue Muay Thai shorts.....dunno what else to say really.... Which classes do you go to? I'm going to start going to the 6:30 class mon/wed next week with my mate so if you go to those I might see you there? BarbieGyal 27-02-2004, 14:10 lol!!! Errrrm yeah im in the B2-Intermediate lessons on Monday and Wednesday at 6.30. There only only bout 4 girls in that lesson so ill be one of them. lol Mike 27-02-2004, 14:21 What do you look like? I'll give you a shout if I recognise you... I don't think I'd better go round all the women in the lesson asking are you BarbieGyal or I'll probably get some very odd looks ;) GazB 01-03-2004, 07:12 Did anyone go to The Night Of Combat in Manchester yesterday? I went along (most of the guys from wicker camp (Chris, Lee, Mick, Trix, Imran (he was fighting)) were there) and it was a great day! Best 3 fights were the England vs Thailand bout (england won), this dutch guy against this english guy and the last one Imran Khan defending his title- He was proper good! It's supposed to have been on Channel 5 but they stopped broadcasting after a while and missed the best fights! I'm not good enough to be in the B2- Intermediate lessons yet but I'm still doing private lessons with Chris every week, so I may see you both there in the near future  ANVIL 02-03-2004, 13:29 Originally posted by Rurouni_Roni muay thai is great. Not Texas by any chance… jay_kd 02-03-2004, 14:53 LOL @ ANVIL theHook 12-03-2004, 23:34 Hmm, haven't been to Mick's place, should really go back to Thai boxing. Although I only went a few months, Mick always welcomed me back without question, especially rest of em. Brill place to train and recomend it to anyone. They really train you hard, but you feel good at end of it plus, months laters, not that many months, say two, and you already feel and see the difference. evildrneil 14-03-2004, 12:39 I used to train with Mick many moons ago (basically untill I left uni and suddenly found I had no time!) I actually started when they were on the Wicker - that was a fab gym - everytime you kicked the bags you got showered in plaster from the roof! I've tried restarting a couple of times but I found it much harder to get back into than to start in the first place :( Oh well maybe I'll try another MA to get back into the mindset and then move back to MT - anyone know of a Kali class anywhere?!?! jamiedb 19-03-2004, 19:15 for kali try mark hayes at the source near meadowhall trained with mark privatly for over a year he teaches doce pares and imb/inosanto lacoste kali, i couldnt recommend him highly enough AmySimmo 10-04-2004, 14:01 I used to train at wicker camp bout 6 months ago, i did it for about three years. Don't get the time anymore though but would love to go back. You aren't wrong at all christian definately knows how to put you through your paces!!!I used to love trainin with trix and mick they always have time for you two wicked people! BarbieGyal 04-05-2004, 12:50 Im looking for somone who is interested in sharing private lessons with me at Wicker camp, any week day would be fine b4 2pm, on a regular basis like one lesson a week, anyone interested? I dont get time to go to the evening sessions no-more. Write back on this board or leave a email address and ill get back to you. x Flutterbyes 16-06-2004, 00:11 barbie id love to share a private lesson, but im too skint at the mo and im in the monday 8-9.30 class so im very very begginer but i love going even tho i work full time and have pt job too... im never going to give it up and i cant wait till i can grade will be a fair way off tho now! jogenn 06-02-2005, 15:10 Muay thai sounds excellent. Love the sound of those knee and elbow techniques. Does anyone know of a muay thai gym near hillsborough? (Bear with me because I have just moved to Sheffield and do not know where the Wicker or Hyde Park is in relation to Hillsborough) Saifa 06-02-2005, 19:11 I just started at Wicker Camp about 6 weeks ago. Top stuff. Ive been doin karate for about 3 years but my mate who trains at WC kept nagging me to come down. Finally did and its well worth it. Bit strange for me having gloves on but I'm sure I'll get used to it... If anyone's heres in the Monday 8-9.30 class I'm the one who keeps getting told off by Sam for doing karate punches when I should be jabbing. (Can't go the wedsnesday one cos thats when I do the karate). Jogenn- it aint too far from 'boro. If you've got a car you can do it in 15. Have a butchers on their site I'm sure they'll have directions on it- can't think what site's called offhand but Im sure someone else will know. theHook 06-02-2005, 19:43 You training I think at Micks and Trix. Yeah, they awesome at training. Your going to best thai teachers I know. Good one Saifa, hope yah keep going. Carl_Malibu 06-02-2005, 20:16 Originally posted by jogenn Muay thai sounds excellent. I'm relocating from County Durham in a few weeks due to work and will be looking for a place to train midweek to keep my fitness up (i'm a King Cobra and am i student of Ex European champ; Master Sean Dooney). Any advice would be MASSIVELY appreciated! GSJoinery 19-09-2006, 21:59 hey all do they do beginner classes at the wickercamp? If so what are the times and prices and what is there address? cheers stussonicos 20-09-2006, 07:57 Shoojiki - Beginners classes are on Monday & Wednesday at 20:00 until 21:30 and also on Friday at 18:00 until 19:30. First lesson is free, after that it's £4 if your working or £3.50 if your un-employed or a student (or it was the last time I taught an adult class so bear with me if I'm worng, if I am it's only be 50p). There are also various monthly tuition fees you can go for which will save your some money but your probably best waiting to see how you get on with it first, although I've never known anyone not like it (and I've been there nearly 11 years). Lead_Legs - sure you'd be welcome at Wicker camp, if you were interested (and going on the assumption that you've got a fairly good grounding in Muay Thai already) you could arrange a private assessment with the Chief Instructor and he could assess your skill and knowledge and place you in the most suitable class (therefore skipping the beginners classes - if that was what you wanted that is). W llll_fb_llll 20-09-2006, 17:20 Yes, prices are still £4:00 waged adult and £3.50 unwaged. See www.wickercamp.com for full info. Stuss - not seen you for ages - do you still train/teach stussonicos 21-09-2006, 07:26 lll_fb-lll - I've been away for a couple of weeks on holiday although up until then I was still training 2 or 3 times a week although with not having any fights lined up I've not been going mad, just plodding along working on a few things. As for teaching, I've had a break for a few months, I've taught the juniors for nearly a year straight and it was getting a bit stale so thought I'd take a break and come back next month - not sure what I'll be teaching yet though. llll_fb_llll 21-09-2006, 09:47 Who takes the Int / Adv classes these days? Are they any good? I might be grading to Intermediate soon stussonicos 21-09-2006, 11:01 Not entirely sure at the moment, think it might be Mick on Tuesdays and Darren on Thursdays. The teaching rota is due to change at the end of this motnh so it'll be all change although Mick usually tends to like taking one of the classes. Pingpang 21-09-2006, 15:12 What is your favourite weapon in muaythai?? Ur elbows, fists, knees,or shins??? i used to go there but haven't been for years - been into wu style tai chi for about 10 years now christian is sound as - we were at the same grade for a couple years til i packed in going saw darren do a class knock out in the ring one time - shin to the head (or was it neck?), his opponent dropped like a sack of spuds my ansa to ur q is ELBOWS - i still love 'em - so easy just to press down on opponent's hands wiv urs and slip the ol elbow over the top - nice and tidy! still use that trick nowadays when doing push hands with wing chun people Pingpang 21-09-2006, 15:15 one of my mates still trains there and says mick has been taking the monday lessons, and he is really enjoying it because there is nothing like a master to teach you. yeah i learnt from mick a lot, he still did a lot of teaching back then - i can still remember the massive impact he could so casually generate while demonstrating a shin kick when i was holding pads - ooof! llll_fb_llll 22-09-2006, 09:55 yeah i learnt from mick a lot, he still did a lot of teaching back then - i can still remember the massive impact he could so casually generate while demonstrating a shin kick when i was holding pads - ooof!
