On The Payroll: HOEDOWN for the people
Saturday 19th Feb, 7.30pm, The Broomhall Centre

With banjos on the radio and hillbillies making more music than ever before, it's no surprise that the demand for old-time American roots music has taken off. One Sheffield-based band have decided to give their fans an opportunity to take a step back to simpler times when the music was fast and the dancing was hard. Pete David & The Payroll Union will be launching the first of their Hoedown events on Saturday 19th Febrauary and it promises to be packed with a host of goodies for those who like their records rusty.

There'll be trained jive dancers to inspire folks to get up and boogie set to a backdrop of bluegrass, western swing and rockabilly records. There'll be free homemade chilli and cornbread, table service for the whiskey drinkers, Sheffield ale from The Brew Co., and a dance competition!

Alongside the host band performing, there'll be Dan Haywood's New Hawks, from Lancaster. Haywood's twisted North-West vocals are set across a craggy Highland landscape, yet backed with a West Coast Americana sound that mixes contemporary and classic influences such as Gram Parsons, Gene Clark, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Alasdair Roberts. The band have just released their humungous 32-track self-titled album and it's already gaining plaudits from the national press. Uncut called it "a weird wild-eyed mix of cosmic country and chamber-folk... makes for a thrilling noise."

Further acts include The Biddy Fiddler, who play bluegrass in its traditional form. Then, bringing the evening back to 2011, Low Duo, one of Sheffield's brightest musical stars, who Counterfeit Magazine described as having "the most beautiful body of music to come out of Sheffield this generation."

Tickets are £5 from http://petedavidandthepayrollunion.co.uk/onthepayroll.html or £7 on the door.
