View Full Version : Going to see United, first time in 30 years

Last time I saw United was on 23rd Sept 1975. Remember it 'cos it was my old mans birthday and I was visiting Sheffield, having recently moved away.
As I recall it was a midweek match and they beat Blackburn 2-1, didn't do them much good though, they were relegated that season.

As a kid I followed them everywhere.

Going to be visiting this weekend and intend going to the Millwall game.
Just a bit apprehensive about the strength of the nostalgia that'll be around.

Anybody got any ideas to stop a grown man from blubbering!!!

Blubber away PhilipB

You'll not be heard because the Millwall shower will be blubbering even louder.:hihi:

Welcome back to the lane - not a bad time to come back is it? If you want some nostaligia - the Hall of fame is worth a visit, and only a couple of quid.

See , it took a fellow Blade to get me to log on here and put my first post on.

going to the lane for the second time in my life.
first time was v Leeds when the blades one 1 - 0 in the cup run 2003.
this time v the owls on dec 3rd.
only problem is i'm a wednesday fan & get to sit in the blades sections - will have to cheer quietly when we score .

Im not praising thuggery but its a derby match, tension is going to be off thescale and they are saying they are going to be cheering (albeit quietly) when (and if) they score- they WILL get put on there arses.

If they want to watch the match they should get tickets for there own end and let blades who are ALLOWED to sit there - go!!!

another poster making assumptions.

a) who said we were all wednesday ites.
b) who decided we aren't allowed to sit there - bramall lane have sold me the tickets.

why does there need to be violence?
the score line proves absolutely sod all in reality, 'cos you'll only moan abot ref's decisions, offsides the inevitable penalty that won't be awarded.
it is after all only a game.

i think any football fan would be stupid to jump up and down in the home ends any ground but if that person is quiet i dont see any harm to it, im sure they will be a few fans in the united ends who dont follow either side doesnt mean they should be attacked

never disputed any of those facts, @ the minute united have won more games than the owls.
however for a newly promoted, currently understrength team we are achieving more than i anticipated.
we havent been in this division for as many years as the blades.we had a few seasons in the higher division, followed by a little rest in the lower league.

Well Panda this was posted on the Blade site by a wendy lad

Theres a lad called ***** on the unitedite.co.uk forum an owl who keeps sending me private messages saying the blades are in for one hell of a suprise, now after careful consideration i thought it might be that they actually turn up at bramall lane, but this lad is telling me its a suprise then in the next message theve bought 100s of tickets for the shoreham end, the following message is theyll be sat in the pubs on london road early doors saturday morning. Forgive me if iam wrong but a suprise is a suprise yet this c**t is telling me and other blades whats about to happen, **** in the wind if you ask me.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I love that bit about the suprise being that they might actually turn up , and I just wanted to post the above because its coming from both sets of fans not just Blades.

:hihi: :hihi:

As for my post I was laughing at Kirky saying "hope they are sat by me "

Can that shabby old ground (Brammall Lane City Centre Farm) handle full capacity.

It hasn't been sold out in years!

Wont it fall down with all that weight on it.

Cmon Im serious it looks old.

Has it been safety tested with a full attendance.

LMAO

When you've got nothing to say about your own relegation-haunted team, find something else. Attendances and the state of United's ground. Class.

'It looks old' you declare.

Whilst not knowing an awful lot about Swillsborough (and being frankly, not bothered) I know that as a matter of fact, Bramall Lane is actually a more modern arena than the aforementioned sty.

New Kop opened in 1991. John Street Stand around 1997. The kop is to be rebuilt in a year's time. South Stand opened around 1975/6 (I stand to be corrected) making Bramall Lane stand the oldest at the Lane.

You've had one stand extended (adding boxes to the back, which are probably as empty as a KFC box in Sudan), a roof over the Kop and that's it. The substructure of your soon to be Division One (again) ground is from the Iron Age.

Have a good look next time you're there; it's sure to be more interesting than the relegation fodder tripe being served up on the pitch.

Thanks for asking.

It was removed by the pathetic people who control this site.

It neither poses a positive or a negative viewpoint just a statement of fact.

Mohamed Ata and the name Terrorist in my opinion is fine.
Mohamed Ata and the name Freedom Fighter in my opinion is fine.

Also my signature was deleted explaining that the avatar had been sensored by these people who control the editorial on this site.

Its thought provoking and thats frowned upon.

Its not allowed on this quote unquote family website.

Thats the excuse used when they want anything sensored.

All You Blades out there.

You are a bitter old bunch.

Just having a dig.

By the amount of replies i've got, looks like i hit the right nerve LMFAO.

Obviously caused by being in Wednesdays shadow for the last 25 years.

It does look 2nd Division from the outside always has, I've no idea what its like inside. I've never been to the lane, I've vowed never to go there.
Do they have cattle pens and bales of hay like a real farm or what, or do they let them pigs just run round loose.

You had a fox problem on your farm a couple of years ago, eating all them discarded pies,

You should've started a Sheffield Hunt before they banned it,
I would've paid money to see that.
I would have bought a bugle from the club shop.

Anyhow its all good.

Just banter, good luck with promotion this season.

I went, I saw, I shed a few silent tears.
All of 30 years absence just evaporated, was right back on the Kop watching Doc Pace, Keith Kettleborough, Tony Currire etc etc etc.

As the song says, "you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone" was this ever the case.

I live over 400miles away and now am seriously contemplating going to every home match.
As a kid I always thought that I'd never leave Sheffield because I wouldn't want to be away from Bramall Lane.
If only I'd have listened to myself.

Perhaps it's a case of being too nostalgic, easy to get all dewy eyed from a distance.
Perhaps it's a case of taking the kid out of Sheffield but can't take Sheffield out of the kid.
Perhaps it's a silly old sod who just wants to return to his roots.

Who knows. I do know I'd give my right arm to be back there.

Thanks United and the crowd at Bramall Lane, it felt as if I'd never been away.
