What we really need to know is whether it will sell proper fishcakes (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21440) ?

The new chip shop on Abbey lane is not even open yet. how you can ever think of eating from a chip shop next door to a vets with bin for dog poo outside it is beyond me.

if it's as good as the sandwich shop opposite it will be

1) fantastic

2) have a lot of competition

I think its important for a shop to look clean and it encourages me to eat at places. I also have peeped through the glass and I like the layout.

As for the vets next door, they dont have poo near the door- how silly!!!

While I am all for competition and convenience of chip shops near my home, and I welcome this new shop to the area.

How can you comment that it is a clean shop when it hasn't even got a range installed never mind had any chip fat in the place. The tiles are new and the paint is clean, but only because it is freshly decorated.

I would be more interested in a comment about wether it is clean after it has been open for six months.

Having just peeped through the door myself, all there is to see is a hole in the floor with some copper pipe sticking out awaiting a plumber, a stainless steel rack which will no doubt go along the back wall.

It can hardly be described as "a Layout".

And yes the vets next door does have a poop bin hanging on the wall next to the door. But it is the other side of the passage and it isn't likely to put anyone off eating. I would rather have the poop bin there than dog mess on the pavement outside.

No doubt it will be open in a week or ten days and I look forward to sampling what's on offer.

Has anybody considered the peolpe living at the back of this fish shop. No doubt there will be a giant extractor fitted before it opens, which will send the smell of chip fat into all the back gardens which back onto it..

Is this really a good idea for a residential area ????

I think not !!!!!!!

Dear Henri,

I don't think that is a problem in this day and age. I used to live near the back of Phoenix about 15 years ago and I never could smell anything.

i agree with henri. The concil should concider the surrounding residence and how they are affected before giving out planning applications. I heared that alot of the residence of abbey lane tried to stop this takeaway opening but it did not make any difference. I think we have enough takeways on woodseats without having them opening on Abbey lane too. I only hope that this is not the first of many takeaways to open on Abbey lane.

It opened on thursday, and is open 7 days. I haven't partaken in any of their offerings just yet but it's so close to me, it would be a crime not to.

I tried some chips from the new shop on thursday night. And while quite healthy tasting they seemed to me to be slightly lacking in flavour. The portion was quite large too.

I would still rate the Abbey Friar at Millhouses better for similar tasting chips. But obviously not as convenient for woodseats.

I have noticed all week that the shop has had a long queue. It is proving very popular. And also I read that it is almost opposite the shop which was a chipshop a few decades ago.

I finally tried some the new chippy on abbey lane today. There was a massive cue but only because they take ages to serve you. I must have waited about 20 minutes to finally get my stuff. I can assure you that it was not worth the wait. I had fish and chips and they were very poor. The chips were taste less and hard and the fish was soggy and i dont think it was cooked properly. It is also exspensive compared to my usual chippy. The shop looks very nice from the outside but it is what the food tastes like that matters. I dont think i will be going there again. :gag:

I had some very nice fish and chips from the new fish bar last week. The only problem was I had to queue for over half an hour to get them and there were only seven people in front of me! I will go again though when they have speeded things up a bit!:)

I went to the new chippy last week. The portions are huge! So much so that I had to throw half away - what a waste! Not that tasty though. My favourite is Tony's at Mosborough.

Worth going but I can't compare it to others in the area cos this one is the only one I've been to.

Glenn,

which part of abbeydale road? There are chip shops all the way along there.?

My reccomendations include Abbey Friar at millhouses, and The grand potato who do huge portions of excellent chips, near to the Broadfield pub but opposite.

This is a new post because it is relevent to the original posting ( the O.P. ) as some people call it.

Tonight I went to the new chip shop on Abbey Lane to get a bag of chips at 6 pm and I had to wait ages in a queue of 20 people, but when I got them home they were possibly some of the finest chips I have ever tasted. They were fresh, crispy and tasty, and an absolutely HUGE portion.

Whereas..
Last week one night, I got some chips from Phoenix and they tasted soapy and luke warm. I didn't sleep well at all because I had bad guts all through the night. I won't be going back there in a hurry.
The chips in that place seem to go right downhill from time to time.

Thank God that we now have more choice here in woodseats.

I have eaten from the new chip shop on abbey lane and the chips were horrible. They tasted funny although the portion was big. I think muddycoffe has something personal against the phoenix which i consider to be the best shop on woodseats. I eat from there three times a week and my stomach is fine. I think muddycoffee might be allergic to good food. If you dont like the phoenix dont go there then. Stop writing rubbish about them on the internet you sad person. Get a life. You have mad 3000 posts dont you have anything better to do with your life than moan about the phoenix. Its obvious that you problem is personal and nothing to do with the food despite what you say.

There seem to be mixed messsages about this new chippy but as its local (ish) to me I will obviously be trying it. I agree with previous contributions, for consistently nice product, Kaz and Julies opp the big tree and Abbey Friar(nr Robin Hood) are streets ahead of everything else in South and poss the whole of Sheffield.

Tomtom, its obvious that YOU are the one that has the problem, out of your 11 posts on this forum, 10 have been about how bad the new chipshop is and how great the Phoenix is.
If you are not financially connected with the Phoenix, you should be welcoming this thread. The more people that go to the new chippy the shorter the queues will be in your three weekly visits to your favourite chip oyl...

Think I might have struck a chord here.

Tomtom, you seem to be floundering (small fish joke there).

Unfortunately for you no, I'm not Muddies alter ego, we have both been seen at the same time,in the same place, by other forummers.

It is nice that you've tried to up your post count, by recommending a chippy thats in Rotherham, saying that greenhill aint too bad, the van gogh museum is worth visiting etc... But it really makes you seem like "a sad person" trying to big up your chippy over the competition.

Just to get things straight, I have no connection with any chip shops anywhere in Sheffield (which I think is more than you can say). My chippy of choice is the one in Dore village (smallish portions and expensive, but taste great and always fresh 'cos nothing is ever ready), or the one at the lights in Millhouses.

Ive just joined this chat forum. I've just moved to the woodseats area and I agree the phoniex shop looks grotty. In comparison to the one on Abbey Lane. I had scampi and chips- it was very good. The chips were cooked just righ:clap:

Good Evening all,

I like going out in Sheffield to different restaurants and take aways. I like the noodle inn on abbeydale road and Posiedon Fish bar on Abbey Lane.

I think its a good shop (posiedons) for the area, in Woodseats! I'm going to visit again.

Bye

I bet you did.

jsg103, I put it to you, that you have links with the chippy known as "Poseidon Fish Bar."

A great percentage of your posts revolve around the aforementioned chip shop and how "great and yummy it is."

In August/September of this year, you were asking for recommendations of forummers for Tilers etc, to fit out your boyfriends new venture.

In November, you were recommending the Poseidon before it even opened, telling us how clean it looked.

I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that you are also registered on the forum as: "lil505" and "Foodtaster"

Yep, brings back memories. Not all good....

I've been to the poseidon, and it's not bad. There's always an enormous queue whenever I go past it on the bus, so either it's the novelty of a new takeaway, or people are going back because they like it.

The chips I got weren't bad, but then again I think good takeaway is a bit of an oxymoron...

I used the new chippy on Abbey Lane about a week after it first opened, at about 1.30pm on a weekday lunchtime, and despite being in a queue of about 3-4 people I was served & out of the place in less than 5 minutes.

The food was hot, excellent and delicious and I have been a very regular customer from that day to this. This is, without doubt, the greatest chippy within a distance of 3 miles in any direction.

I have to totally disagree with all the comments on thsi chippy being nice.

I went on Friday evening and in all honesty they were bog standard, not rubbish but i have had far better fish and chips. I would recommend Woodseats chippy as being better than the one on Abbey Lane.

I also think a lot of these responses are shameless plugs by firends and family of employees and proprietor.

We went tonight to suss it out (would normally go to the Phoenix) are were pretty impressed. There was a queue of about 4 people in front of us, and we must have been queuing for about 15 minutes! (Could this be a ploy to make the place look extra busy with a long queue?) The 2 men serving were very friendly, and food was delicious - boyf was particularly impressed with the huge cod and mushy peas. To be honest I was kind of hoping it wouldn't be as good as the phoenix, but judging from tonight's experience I would say they are both pretty similar. Which could lead to a dilemma when the next chip craving occurs!

The woman in the Spar said it was awful , the fish and chips made her ILL !!! and they do kebabs, so its not a proper fish and chip shop like WOODSEATS FISHERIES which sells the best fish and chips ever... !

God knows why it is needed, there is no shortage of fast food places in Woodseats, I personally hope it fails, they are building some apartments 2 doors away, who'd want to live there with the stench of a chip shop / kebab house on the door step, actually the vets probably has a bin full of deceased animals round the back, Kebab anyone ???? :gag: :gag: :help:
