View Full Version : Question about how this site works

As much as I love these forums, I spend too much time here, I am irritated by its functionallity.

I use some other forums that open another window when you click a link, but SF doesn't. I would like it to work like that.

Going 'back' is a pain. Is anyone else with me on this?

Is it important?!

Bugs the hell out of me!

Any mod input?

If you want another window to open up when you click on it, press the Shift button while you click, that opens it up in a new window.

It used to do that but it was changed.

Don't you hold shift or Ctrl when you click to make it open in a new window?

Thanx for that Spyro, will give it a try. But why doesn't it do it automatically?

Other forums do.

It happened before we got hoiked over to the new server.

There's lots of things this site doesn't do. But there's a good reason for all of it. We can't post pics either. The graphics are basic.

We have over 15,000 members, and there's usually over 300 people online at once. Some are still on dial-up.

Thanx Strix

perfectly happy with the rest of the forum.

It's just this that annoys me. If there is a good reason, so be it:)

Draggletail nearly managed to crash us a couple of weeks ago.

He threw an online party (forum feast I think he called it), and so many people were trying to access it at once that it started giving us stroppy messages :D

I just right click on the link, and then open in new window...seems a lot easier than some of the other suggestions because you don't need to use the keyboard at all, just the mouse.

I have a small request! Or small idea that I know is easy to do (cus I've run this style of forum years ago). Or do this on your new forum...

The links people post just as plain text obviously go to a linked url. That is cool. But why not default these to a '_blank' so it brings another window? Opening in the same window doesn't enhance the forum experience cus you lose your page and cannot reference back without manually opening another tab or window (for IE users).

I'm sorry if I've posted this in the wrong forum but I couldn't decide which is the best one :)

Thanks for maybe considering my idea!

If you right click the link it will give an option to open a seperate window.

This has been discussed many times over. Leaving it as it is gives people a choice as to if they wish to view it in the same window or not.

Doing it the way you suggest doesnt give the user a choice.

It is always a good idea to read how a forum does work. That would mean that you would search before posting and would have found this:

As well as many others.:D

Not sure why Geoff changed it but how the OP described is the way the forum used to run when I first joined back in 2003.

Geoff made some changes and bish bosh no more new window.
Now you can hold down a shift key when you click any link and get a new window... but sometimes I forget and it is a pain a lot of the time.

Would be nice to see it restored to it's former glory, but meh what do I know ;)

Thanks for that, saved me looking. Threads merged.

this is a must!

at the top we have a nice breadcrumb trail to send us back to home > general > etc

could this not also be at the bottom where posts end?

please do not tell me the plethora of keyboard and mouse shortcuts i could use.

i know them all ;-)

yeah, this one has annoyed me too, it makes sense along with a reply button at the top.

Also how about a login box for those who haven't logged in when they first come to the site. I regularly delete my cache and cookies and find I can’t remember where to login.

And there's me complaining that I had to read the whole of this thread from beginning to end just to understand what you meant.
