View Full Version : Jaffa cakes? Bun or Biscuit?
Mosherchik 11-02-2004, 10:20 Jaffa Cakes The finest snack known to humankind...
But the greatest question of all?
Is it a bun? or is it a biscuit?
surely the term "Jaffa cake" implies it is a bun yet all supermarkets, shops and reputable food outlets stock them on the biscuit aisle......... :loopy:
Opinions if any?
jackthedog 11-02-2004, 10:40 It should be classed by how we use it. We dont eat it like a bun, we eat many of them from a packet, with a cup of tea. So biscuit it is for me...

Very true I have been known to demolish a packet infront of some mindless TV in one of my moments of existential blankness, but Ive also done to same to a packet of fairy cakes and mince pies  :P
I will eat anything when in existential blankness mood....:loopy: I once nearly ate the remote out of sheer despair!
I digress....Jaffa cakes have the spongey base so by right it is surely a cake! albeit a small bite size cake!
Oooooo wouldnt it be good if they make an actual huge Jaffa cake! :wow:

No, the orange stuff is not actually very nice in large quantities. It really is an extremely fine balance between the two parts of a Jaffa Cake, and the current style meets this balance just right.
Although if they made a big one, you could use a pizza cutter to slice it up, which is quite cool.
Sorry to be boring but there was a really famous tax case about this, we pay VAT on biscuits but not on cakes (i know it makes no sense). I think the jist of it was that the Inland Revenue said that although Jaffa Cakes are called cakes they are biscuits and therefore VAT should be paid. In the end it was proved that Jaffa Cakes - although marketing similarly to a biscuit - in fact use a cake like sponge so are officially cakes - so no VAT.
still ridiculously expensive though (but very yummy)
To quote Jonny on 2 pints of lager and a bag of crisps last night....
"I got my lovely crunchy biscuit , I'm gonna say it again 'case ya missed it, I ain't dunkin' a jaffa like a biscuit"
Man that song cracked me up

DaBouncer 11-02-2004, 11:45 The finest biscuit HAS to be (without a doubt) Chocolate Covered Hob Nobs. They are amazing. Closely followed by Bisc& (also a real fav of mine)!

Only if they are plain chocolate ones. The milk chocy ones are OK but they don't cut the mustard like the plain chocolate ones.

Ah yes, the S.A.S of biscuits, keep dipping them in your tea, and again and again (been watching too much Peter Kay!), they will not break, they'll just drink your brew.
I love Jaffa cakes, I'm one of those people who eats it bit by bit till I'm left with the orange centre!

Sadly all this means is the companies make more money cos they charge the same price - but none is VAT (Sorry if that doesn't make much sense!)
Biscuits are a luxury item, and cake isn't - historical reasons I think.
And on that note, I also reckon choc hob nobs are the best, closely followed by choc digestives, tho normal digestives covered in cream cheese are also very good.

Sam Miguel 11-02-2004, 18:09 Jaffa cakes are biscuits. Don't anyone try and convince you otherwise.

I salute you sir!
Have you seen the Jaffa cake bars??? I requested Jaffa cakes from the supermarket and I was given Jaffa Cake bars!!!! In my opinion inferior to the original!
I ate them just the same though
I live for the orange
Sam Miguel 11-02-2004, 18:41 But they are definitely classified as biscuits. Dundee cakes are biscuits, as Jaffa biscuits are - in fact they are marmalade biscuits.
Anyway, even if they were cakes, which thay aren't, they couldn't be because they aren't big enough.
They would have to be buns, which are smaller than cakes, but clearly they are not: they are biscuits.
Nope your wrong,,,,,,they are cakes, buscuits are crunchy and not soft and fluffy like jaffa CAKES.
dont make me go and buy some, because I will,im on the edge you know,,,,,lol
SatanInHeels 11-02-2004, 19:34 mmmmm jaffa cakes!!!
i would say they are a biscuit but now im thinking about it.. they have got spunge on the bottom and "cakes" seems to suggest buns..
who cares actually.. they taste good all the same!
Sam Miguel 11-02-2004, 19:41 Ok, if they're cakes, how come they are meant for one person to eat? The difference between a cake and a bun, I think, is that a cake is made to share and a bun is for one person only.
Anyway, I think that they should be re-named Jaffa Marmalade Buns to clarify exactly what they are thus avoiding any more controversy.
Th jaffa cake debate not only centred on whether it was a cake but also how much choc was on it - thankfully it is thin enough to get away with and avoid the VAT. This could be why they only did the completely choc coated ones for a short while :P
Here is an extract from http://www.parliament.the-stationery-office.co.uk/pa/cm199697/cmhansrd/vo970114/debtext/70114-22.htm
"A classic example of the difficulties was in the application of VAT to Jaffa cakes. Today, at a distance, that may sound like a ridiculous and trite example, but at the time it exercised minds. Should a Jaffa cake be zero or standard rated? It all depended on whether it was regarded as food, which would make it zero rated, or as a chocolate, sweet confection, which would make it a snack food and standard rated. There was a similar experience with peanuts, depending on whether they were salted, roasted or plain. Their VAT treatment depended on the category to which they belonged. "
The law is an ass as someone said :P
Ahhh but if you are a realy tiny person living in a household of tiny people,it can be shared amongst them....some left over for supper too.
sorted..

But by definition a bun is a small cake! And who says a cake is made to share??? I dont think so!!! :P
