View Full Version : Smoking or Flu down at the pub or in the office.
Anna Glypta 15-01-2011, 10:45 We all know that smoking is banned in public places and good riddance I say. But what about other antisocial and health threatening issues like flu?
Last night there was a guy in the local absolutely full of it. He stood by the bar and coughed and sneezed over everyone who came near. We all cleared off pretty quickly.
As around 100 people have already died in the current flu epedemic shouldn't landlords be a bit more responsible and tell these folks to clear off home?
BettyBooHoo! 15-01-2011, 10:46 Landlord probably needs the flu riddled fellas dosh after the smoking ban lost the pubs so much business!
Chris_Sleeps 15-01-2011, 10:47 It's not flu if he made it to the pub.

He lost ours
BettyBooHoo! 15-01-2011, 10:51 He lost ours
Ahhh, you win some, you loose some. Tis life!
Bigthumb 15-01-2011, 11:29 It's not flu if he made it to the pub.
I think you are mixing up flu with being shot or having a stroke. Folks with flu seem quite capable of getting to a doctors waiting room and infecting others. I can't see why it would stop the inconsiderate making it to the boozer.
ricgem2002 15-01-2011, 11:32 He lost ours he probably heard you were for the smoking ban :hihi::hihi::hihi:.
Greybeard 15-01-2011, 11:33 Targeting the local pub is pretty tame. If you really want your infection to get around go to work on the tram or bus. :hihi:

Thread title....QUOTE...Smoking or Flu down at the pub or in the office.
As 100,000 people die from smoking each year in the uk, its not exactly in the same league.
Anna Glypta 15-01-2011, 11:57 As 100,000 people die from smoking each year in the uk, its not exactly in the same league.
And on average 21,000 die of flu each year in the UK, and in one particularly bad year that reached 250,000, so perhaps it is.

I was using your figure of '100', which is one thousandth of that for smoking.
Chris_Sleeps 15-01-2011, 12:37 I think you are mixing up flu with being shot or having a stroke.
I think you're mixing up a bad cold with the flu.
Bigthumb 15-01-2011, 12:47 I think you're mixing up a bad cold with the flu.
No. I think you are mixing up flu with paralysis.
Chris_Sleeps 15-01-2011, 12:50 No. I think you are mixing up flu with paralysis.
As you wish. I had the flu before Christmas. I was in bed for 5 days. All my bones ached, my sinuses were so sore that my jaw and teeth ached. At no point during that time did I think "might pop down to't pub".
ricgem2002 15-01-2011, 16:32 And on average 21,000 die of flu each year in the UK, and in one particularly bad year that reached 250,000, so perhaps it is. did the three ghosts at christmas miss your house last year :huh:anything else you want to ban
robwillow 15-01-2011, 16:35 No. I think you are mixing up flu with paralysis.
A GP friend says if you put £10 on a table and ask someone with flu to get it they won't be bothered, without flu they will take it. Can't see anyone who feels that bad being in the pub.

I can well believe it. I had flu last month and was in bed for 5 days too. I could hardly manage to stagger to the bathroom to get a drink of water, let alone think about getting dressed and leaving the house. People who think they can go to work or the pub with flu have never had flu.
Lady Star 16-01-2011, 01:21 It's not flu if he made it to the pub.
You are so right - with flu he'd be lucky to make it to his own kitchen! People get colds and recover from them quickly all the time...
The Government should ban the flu' immediately. Our country is a wonderful place now that we 've got smoking bans, hunting bans and firearms bans. Hasn 't anyone noticed the happy, smiling people walking, carefree and content, round our cities ? So, what could be more sensible than a flu ban ?
Other bans that spring to mind that could make us jump for joy, are :- Baron Prescott, any more films starring Johnny Depp, photographs of Elton John [ and his
' wunnerful family '], people who say ' awesome ', all Americans under 40 years of age.....and obviously Rolf Harris and young D.J.s. Any more whilst we 're in the banning mode ??
Forumosaurus 16-01-2011, 04:19 What about if he needs bread? Is he still allowed in the shop or can't he go there either?
Now he's dead cause he's got nothing to eat, and he didn't even have flu, it was only cold.
Hope you're proud of yourself.
And I agree with Fareast, they should just ban it, in fact when I'm prime minister I'm going to ban flu, cold, AIDS, erm..the wind, also I'ma make it so that all people are bor...in fact, when I'm prime minister, human saliva will just be Dettol, except it will kill the remaining 0.1% of bacteria as well.
Also there will be no VAT on Cadburys Creme Eggs.
So bam.
What about if he needs bread? Is he still allowed in the shop or can't he go there either?
If he has flu he won't have an appetite, and if he tries to eat, he'll probably be sick.

Lol, it's too late to ban it - Labour got voted out. :hihi:

Yes there is. Only basic, 'essential' foods are VAT-exempt. Creme eggs, as with all chocolate, are sadly classed as luxury food.

Well said if they had Flu they wouldn’t get down stairs never mind down the road to the pub.
My wife started with a runny nose and then cold like symptoms so she went to bed, she was there for 3 days and couldn’t even keep a class of water down so I called the doctor out who sent her straight to hospital ………. That’s what you call flu.
I did say "When I'm Prime Minister" though didn't I
Oh yeah :)

Care to elaborate?

Someone in the pub with flu was caughing everywhere.............SO WHAT?!
Hardly surprising that an anti smoker posted this thread!
Like richyhello said earlier, what about a trip to the shop, should we ban people from the shop when they are ill? Should we stop parents from picking their kids up from school if they are ill?
And your reply just sums this place up! - If he has flu he won't have an appetite, and if he tries to eat, he'll probably be sick.
If you don't like smelling smoke or hearing people cuogh when they have cold then you might as will do us all a favour and stay at home!!

You appear to have misinterpreted me. Not once have I complained in this thread about people who are ill going into public places. It was a side argument about people saying they've got flu when all they've got is a bad cold.
If I have a bad cold, I'll still go to work (and do my best to keep my germs to myself). And there's no way I'll let a case of the sniffles stop me going to the pub. Nor will I begrudge anyone else the right to do likewise. But if I (or they) have flu, the fact is they won't be getting out of bed for days.

If you have flu you can't get out of bed to pick up a £100!! You feel like you have been hit by a truck - you wouldn't be at the pub.
He had a cold.

Who cares what he had!! If he wants a pint, he should be able to go to the pub.

Sorry for being so pedantic(?) but I can't stand it when people say they have flu when they are out and about. They most likely have a bad cold.
And yes, he should be able to go to the pub, everyone has germs of some sort, unfortunately people are going to get a cold at this time of year, there is no point in no-one being allowed out of the house if they have a cough or sneeze!!!
As you wish. I had the flu before Christmas. I was in bed for 5 days. All my bones ached, my sinuses were so sore that my jaw and teeth ached. At no point during that time did I think "might pop down to't pub".
Poof. Walk it off.
shortcrust 16-01-2011, 18:46 *sighs* Some people have flu with only very mild symptoms. All this stuff about not being able to lift your head is nonsense.
pennypie 16-01-2011, 18:57 *sighs* Some people have flu with only very mild symptoms. All this stuff about not being able to lift your head is nonsense.
*sigh* If they have very slight symptoms, then they have a cold. If you have flu, you know about it.

I think the OP should a) get a grip on reality or b) get a Jacko style sterile oxygen tent to live in.

Absolute rubbish. There are cases where people have tested positive for flu without any symptoms at all! I'll find a link when Larkrise is over.:)
The notion of landlords chucking people out of the boozer for sneezing or having a bit of a sniffle is utterly ridiculous.
Can if I refer the OP to my earlier comments about oxygen tents....

Even if there are 1 or 2 cases, 99% of the others who say that they have flu actually have a cold. If you are sneezing and coughing then you have a cold and I don't see why people have to make it sound worse than it actually is.
A cold is horrible and when you have it you feel like you would happily just curl up and die when its at it worst (I have terrible man-flu when I have a cold) but admit its a cold because you are allowed to feel rubbish without saying its flu - when it isn't!

Oh I am SO with you on this one.People keep coming into my place of work and coughing and sneezing within about a foot of me, then they complain how ill they are.Well if they are that ill what are they doing out?And..If they make ME ill too, then they won't even be able to come to my place of work cos I'll have to shut. Grrrrrrr
