Does anyone know what the mast is just down from Newfield Green shops is.

The council haven't a clue, as they have't had to give planning permission for it and can confirm its defintly NOT for Mobile phones.

I will try and take a photo and post to the web.

The mast outside the old peoples home on Gleadless Road is situated at the side of what looks like a Cable T.V junction box.
I have been told it looks like a mobile phone relay mast.
If its been placed there to monitor the 47 bus it will rust away I can tell you!

Why would Cable need a mast, as it sorta then would be cable:confused:

What ever it is it didn't need planning permossion so therefore isn't a moblie phone mast. If it did need planning permission than its been built illeagly as the planning department in Howden House know nothing of it.

The mast is a relay for the dwp fraud investigation branch

Their monitoring equipment only has a limited range so need relays all over the place.

Is this true Owl or a dig at DWP???

If it is true do you knowwhy it doesn't need planning permission??

I would imagine its sanctioned by the government and is therefore exempt from local council rules...

Hmm, Owl I think your information is slightly out of date. After recent heavy investment the DWP have upgraded to satellite tracking so they have no need for these kind of relays anymore.

So the mystery continues...

If you read the message properly I said "WHAT LOOKS LIKE A CABLE JUNCTION BOX" I didnt say it was a cable box.
The mast belongs to O2 anyway and it is a Mobile phone mast and I dont mean it moves around by itself!!

Why, your'e all wrong. It's part of an early warning system which has been installed to detect incoming spacecraft as they attempt to land on the Newfield School playing fields.

They will be forced to return to Jupiter and the World will be saved for a bit.

It was my understanding that you needed planning permission to put up a moblie phone mast except on BR property. So if its O2's then why no planning permission?

These phone companies know to our cost, they dont need planning permission for their masts if they are under a certain height.
You try to erect anything that size and you would be told in no uncertain terms to remove it! Its the same old story one law for them and one for us.
