View Full Version : Does anyone else suffer from bells palsy
michael_v2 09-11-2005, 17:08 Last year, i had an accident. I was on my bike, and decided to take on a tree. Needless to say, the tree won. On my 3rd morning in hospital, i woke up to find the right side of my face was paralysed. Firstly, i thought i'd had a stroke. Turned out it was bells palsy. I had my final hospital visit last week, and the consultant said my face was as far recovered as it is going to get. About 80% back to normal.
So, was wondering if anyone else here has had it, how much recovery you got, and also does the cold weather and/or stress bring it on again.
I have noticed that with the weather getting colder, my face does feel a little tighter, and words sound a little slurred.
HappyHoosier 09-11-2005, 21:01 I haven't had Bell's Palsy, but a member of my dance troupe has had it for about three months. He woke up with the facial paralysis one morning and, like you, thought he had had a stroke. It caused one side of his mouth and one eye/eyelid to droop, but has improved steadily. It's hardly noticeable now.
Hopefully, your symptoms will fade as his have. I'll ask him if cold and stress affect his symptoms. I wish you the best.
fnkysknky 09-11-2005, 21:01 I'd never heard of it until today when a bloke at work told me he had it when in the army after being out in -20 for 2 hours or so - his face made a full recovery after a few months. The doctor said as he was young he had an 80% chance of a full recovery.
my son had bells palsy when he was about 6/7 yrs it cleared up with no lasting effects

I have noticed that with the weather getting colder, my face does feel a little tighter, and words sound a little slurred. My husband has had Bells Palsy twice, and recovered twice. The first time he had been standing for a long time in very cold water fishing, and woke up next morning with Bells Palsy. We thought he had had a stroke. It slowly came back to normal, but it took about Six months.Sometimes his left eye is still affected, and he cant feel his bottom lip sometimes when he is eating.Otherwise He has 95% of feeling back in his face.
My Lad had it when he was 6, it was only slight then, and we didn't realise what it was. It came back again around 10 and he was seen by a specialist at Calow, who said it should clear up, but was relatively uncommon at that age. Has happened once since, but nothing for the last 2 years. It never affected him as such, apart from his lopsided chops!!
I don't know whether repeated clips round the lugs brought it about!!??
MissGobby 10-11-2005, 13:25 my boyfriend, 2 weeks ago went to the hospital and was diagnosed with Bells Palsy, he is in the army and now on his 2nd week of sick. It attacked the right side of his face so when he talks/smiles/blinks, nothing happens on his right side. It doesnt hurt him but its not very nice for him.
The doctor said it is brought on by cold sores, but seen as though he hasnt had one for ages, it seems odd. I have spoke to a few people and they say it is mainly brought on by stress, this seems the obvious reason as it came on just after he had taken his driving test...for the 3rd time.
I hope it clears completley, it is really scary to think this can happen so sudden....!!
michael_v2 10-11-2005, 20:18 some times it's hardly noticable, but when it's cold, or i'm stressed, it feels like it's coming on again.
at first, i couldn't close my right eye, or smile properly. dribbling was a problem. when i went to sleep, my eye had to be taped shut. once fell asleep, and my eye dried up. very sore that was.
I know that this is a silly thing to think, but, i haven't had the confidence to talk to women as much as i did before because i'm worried what they would think, and (this is the sad bit) wether the kissing will be poor as my mouth sometimes doesn't do what i want it to.
incidently, accident was 15 months ago, and i can now finally manage to whistle again.

<< This is exactly what has happened to my boyfriend, he has to wear this tape (which he doesnt - he says its too irratating!) and put eye drops in, although he is getting feeling back in his face, it still doesnt move, when he smiles or blinks only one side of his face moves.
My friends father woke up one morning with this condition. this was in 1991. It took him nearly a year to get back to the feeling of normality but he does have phases when he has less. Sometimes noticeably less. But so far it has always gradually returned to near normal.
And the stress reason that Miss Gobby says would fit with my friends' father as he was having a tough time when it happened. But we have never thought of that...
