When I fill up with petrol I always make it a round figure, £10, £20 if you know what I mean.
Now when like yesterday I put £10 in the tank and go to the cashier it suddenly becomes £10.01.
Now I know that 1p was not there when I hung up the pump and it happens to me quite often.
When I complained about it for the first time yesterday they gave me a look as though I was a miser.
Now I'm not bothered about the money, but this happens a lot and I go out of my way to check this before I go to the cashier.
If they do this to other motorists then they are building up a nice little earner.

If they are charging you differently at the point of sale from what is displayed on the pump then I reckon they're doing something illegal. Next time, might be worth standing at the pump for a few seconds after "hanging up" and definitely confirm what is on the display before going to the till.
Is this one particular pump/garage?

Perhaps a bit of a tangent, but I've lived in England over a year now, and the humble 1p and 2p are the bane of my existence. Not only do they weigh down your purse, but after years and years of living in Australia (where they did away with 1 cent and 2 cent pieces) I still find myself rounding stuff up/down and always paying the wrong amount in shops!

So cycleracer, you could always move to Australia where you'd only have to pay the £10 (or the equivalent, $25 Aus dollars) :) If that doesn't tempt you, perhaps the prospect of only paying about $1.15 AU a litre will?

Because $1.15 converts to about 50p...

Maybe the monster raving loony party should bring in, in addition to the 99 pence coin, a ten pound one pence note  Well it might get your vote!

I just save up all my 1p and 2p coins in a large container (currently using larger pringles tins), as does my Nanna - then every so often we pool them together, take them to the bank and get them changed for notes then donate the money to charity.

Done that since before I can remember.

Knowing this country if it did away with the smaller coinage everything would be rounded UP to the next 50p, not down. As it did when we changed to decimal in the 60s/70s:mad:
