I have 2 hard drives as follows: -
C....2GB over 3/4 full
D....4Gb less than 1/8 full.
I dragged & dropped the folder 'Programme files' from C into D and checked all folders within were now also listed in D.
Question is........am I now safe to delete all Programme file from C?
I dragged into recycle bin, thinking I could test and bring back if problems, but they are too big (and also warned that this could 'impact' registered programmes).
I chose 'Continue' but the progs are too large for the Recycle bin and bottled it when asked if I wanted to permanently delete.
Is it safe to delete from C now they are listed in D??
THANKS!!!!!
NO.
Many of the programs will have registry entries which will point to the location on c. If you just move them around like that they will cease to work.
Not all programs mind, some will work fine, but how do you know which!
There's also the problem that none of your menu entries will work anymore as they will point to c, but that's a relatively minor problem.
neeeeeeeeeek

Listen to Cycone, the man talks sense!! NOTHING WILL WORK!!!
You need to uninstall programs using the add and remove option or uninstall option. Then reinstall them from their respective CD's / DVD's but selecting a directory on the 'D' drive. Obviously only uninstall things that you have the CD's for.
If you're using any MS OS before Win 95, you'll be OK.
Doing this on any Win 9x/ME/2K/XP box will kill many of the programs.
You'd be better getting a new HD and imaging the entire HD for transportation to the new one:).
program files as a folder and a recycle bin suggest windoze to me.
Well......thats what I like........straightforward answers!!
Good job I bottled it!!!!!!
Thanks very much!!
Am I safe now to delete from D, as the originals still exist in C?

I know;). Just mentioned it for posterity:).
However, there are ways to move the entire "Programs" folder to a different HD/partition (and still leave Windows able to access them as normal) but this involves some deep registry editing, and takes quite a while (even on a fresh install:().

Yeah but chuck 'em on a blank CD if you have a writer in case the C drive ever goes tits up.
Not wishing to scare you but that does happen occassionally, especially if you do a lot of downloading off P2P apps etc.
