Hi all,
Just encountered this on the BBC website :
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/4420138.stm
A National Curriculumn type thing for childminders to teach before the kids go to school.
Now, I could read, write (just) and count when I went to school because my mother taught me. It was a choice that was made, and it worked for me.
To me this idea reeks of further governmental interference in to day to day life. How long before they make nursery education compulsory, no doubt under the guise of 'ensuring all babies have the same opportunity' for education in our Brave New World?
I'm probably over-reacting here (first coffee of the day being digested, morning bath not yet wallowed in) but it does seem to me to be Government interference in an area of life which they should leave alone. Given the state of the rest of the education system, it would be nice if they could ensure all school-leavers can read before starting on 2 year olds.

Hi honestly think that the education system is well overdue an overhaul. We put far too much pressure on young children, my five year has homework for heavens sake.
In Sweden children do not start school until they are 7 years old and there level of dyslexia are much lower than ours. This may be due to other factors but I do think the age has an effect.
I would much sooner see the education system concentrate on foreign language skills to start with. This should be entirely oral based with no or very little written work.

Totally agree, what's with the key stage nonsense? Little kids should be learning in a fun way and NOT doing exams, why would we want to put pressure on them at such a young age?
They have GSCEs and Alevels to contend with when they are older. Less of the studying and more of the playing!
Before anyone says anything I have 10 GSCEs, 3 Alevels, 2 degrees and just started my PhD- obviously can't stop studying.....

Flippin eck thats a bit harsh on the little uns int it!!
im glad i aint havin no more children cos if they tried that with any of my children then they wouldnt be going to nursery or to a childminder!
my little boy has learnin difficulties that were picked up when he first started nursery and he had extra tuition but it never interfierd with his play time or his fun yeah sure it was a little extra work but it was worth it in the end.
i taught my son a lot of things before he started nursery and my mother taught me things like numbers, how to write my name, learnin colours ect ect so what exactely are they tryin to say is it that what we teach our children ourselves is not good enough?
i think its just an excuse as they no longer offer full time nursery places! and they are wonderin if childrens learnin will suffer perhaps? i may be wrong i usually am LOL!
i think its a load of even more goverment rubbish tbh! i dont think this will help the childrens learnin at all! i infact think that it will damage them mentally i mean think about it.......
boy says ---- what things did you do when you was 2?
girl says ----- i did mathematics and a little english!
boy says----- flippin eck all i did was learn how to walk!

Can't the little ones just learn how to play and play together?
Everything has to be measured these days but we don't seem to measure other things that are important e.g sharing, kindness, good manners etc..
And carers should not be doing this - this a role for teachers.

Children should be just allowed to play and experience the world around them at their own pace. This idea really sickens me.
