The fallout from this is going to be massive, just read the Joe.My.God blog to realise why:

Jessica23 08-01-2011, 20:50 I've been glued to the internet since this happened.
Sarah Palin has apparently now taken down the 'crosshairs' graphic from her website. Although about a million people have taken screenshots of it, and hundreds have retweeted her comment about conservatives needing to 'reload' instead of 'retreat.'
Christ this makes me angry. Yet another reason to think that the phrase 'pro life' is a massive pile of horse manure.
Jessica23 08-01-2011, 20:58 Live blog of developments and reaction from the NY Times here:

ETA: I should clarify - there is now lots of speculation floating around about the perpetrator's politics, and whether or not he was Tea-Party inclined - I don't think it matters. The American's right's rhetoric about guns and arms is what's important. Especially when it JUST SO HAPPENS to be the liberal politicians who are getting shot.

It makes me angry too.
The guy is probably a nutcase, and it might turn out that he's got nothing to the tea-party movement, but that's not the point ... it's the fact that the language of hate is allowed in political debate at all.
It's just like the Dr. George Tiller murder, all those pundits that used hateful and provocative language against him were quick to condemn his murder after it had happened, but they were the reason it did happen.

joemygod isn't too swift when it comes to facts. Giffords doctor has just announced that she is in critical condition but expected to live. Not dead as joemygod stated in the blog

I agree with you about pro-life but i cant see a reference to it in the coverage. Have I missed something?

To be fair, Harleyman, Reuters were reporting she was dead when the news broke, as were the BBC and other major news sources. The blog in question has updated. There were conflicting reports for a while.

No, I'm just cross and making some probably dodgy logical leaps...it's as quisquose says above re: George Tiller. American hard right are fanatical about being anti-abortion and pro-guns. When the guns are then used to kill people this makes me think PRO-LIFE MY ASS.
I know Giffords isn't dead, but others are.
Jessica23 08-01-2011, 21:27 Here's a twitter profile from someone who knew the person who has apparently been arrested in connection with the shooting. She says she hasn't seen him since 2007 but when she knew him he was left wing, a 'pothead' who was into Hendrix...

The shooter has just been named. Jared Lee Loughner aged 22
quisquose 08-01-2011, 21:44 The shooter has just been named. Jared Lee Loughner aged 22
Yes, I read that name on the Joe.my.god blog, and various others, nearly two hours ago.
Chris_Sleeps 08-01-2011, 21:54 I'll quote someone who put a post on kvoa.com (http://www.kvoa.com/news/6-dead-12-injured-from-shooting-giffords-condition-unknown/), an Arizona news paper I believe.

It's no wonder that Congresswoman Giffords "felt threatened" during the campaign, as mentioned during your TV coverage, after Sarah Palin's map placed gun sight crosshairs on her - (Link) (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/24/sarah-palins-pac-puts-gun_n_511433.html) and Jesse Kelly held a rally inviting people to "shoot a fully automatic M16" in support of the idea of removing Giffords from office - (Link) (http://firedoglake.com/2011/01/08/giffords-opponent-jesse-kelly-held-june-event-to-shoot-a-fully-automatic-m16-to-get-on-target-and-remove-gabrielle-giffords/). Shocking behavior. I'd like to hear from both Palin and Kelly about the consequences of their hateful incitement to violence.

It is, or at least it's been reported as him by the networks for a few hours.
mj.scuba 09-01-2011, 07:06 Terrible news, I hope they fry the guy that did it.

Chris_Sleeps 09-01-2011, 13:01 The BBC have a 'What We Know' article (Link): (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-12144405)
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE SUSPECT
The alleged gunman has been identified by local media as Jared Loughner, aged 22. Local officials confirmed the person in custody was a 22-year-old white man but declined to name him.
Profile: Suspect Jared Loughner
[...]A statement from the US Army said the alleged gunman had sought to enlist but was unsuccessful.
"In accordance with the Privacy Act, we will not discuss why he was rejected," the statement said.
An old schoolmate of Mr Loughner told the Associated Press news agency he was a cannabis-smoking loner.

Watching the news.

Leave veterans out of it. The shooter was rejected by the army on the grounds of mental instability.

Even Fox News disagrees with that: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/01/09/arizona-suspected-gunman-no-stranger-to-trouble/ They are linking him with American Rennaisance. Who are they? Not very nice people: wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Renaissance_(magazine)) and their hompage (http://www.amren.com/).
For those who can't be bothered to click the links, American Rennaisance is a white supremacist organization.

It's not completely clear yet what kind of creature this man is. Apparently he's read Hitler's Mein Kampf, the Communist Manifesto and posted a lot of rambling statements on Facebook. Seems he has a lot of grudges about political issues in general.
The fact that he targeted Congresswoman Giffords, a Democrat with political middle of the road views does point to him being a right wing nutter.

From his youtube vids, I reckon he has it in for "the system" and politics in general, rather than being particularly left/right.

Seems to be struggling to find any ideology whilst struggling to get on in life and has an irrational/semi rational against 'the system'.
He's a near on perfect stereotypical terrorist.
Harleyman 09-01-2011, 17:55 Years ago unbalanced people like him who went around uttering threats were locked up. Now it's no longer allowed. Worse still these kind of people can feed their obsessions on hate websites on the internet.
I can see his defense attorney using the old insanity plea when it comes time for his sentencing. Unfortunately it will I think, get him off a date with the executioner.

Palin and the TeaParty will pull a few strings.
Those wacko loons from the Westboro Baptist Church (http://www.suite101.com/content/westboro-church-to-picket-funeral-of-nine-year-old-tucson-victim-a330943) have announced they are going to picket the funeral of the 9 year old girl who died in this shooting.
Words fail me.

Have a look at the 'most hated family in America'...even more hated than Jeremy Kyle's usual interviewees.

There were conflicting reports for a while.A little after first reports were coming out of Arizona, I was watching CBS National news and they announced Gifford was dead. It was quite a while before they changed the story.

They've just passed one (http://abcnews.go.com/US/arizona-angels-lawmakers-stop-westboro-protesters-christina-taylor/story?id=12599263).
Nice to see politicians moving swiftly and effectively to protect grieving famillys.
Palin and the TeaParty will pull a few strings. If Palin has any sense left, she'll shut her stupid mouth for once in her life. I hope and pray this will show the gullible in our country that she is not presidential material. Adolf in a skirt.

To be fair Loughner had no connection or interest in Palin according to news reports but on the other hand Palin needs to tone down her rhetoric and stop using "gun language" in her speeches such as saying "it's time to lock and load" when speaking in terms of taking political aim at Obama and the Democrats.
