hiya all you pc buffs and fellow forumers,
I have just recieved an email from a friend in the USA and wondered if anybody could help please, I have copied the letter to this request, it reads:

I have a problem with my computer and I hope someone can tell me how to solve. It will not let me delete anything. It won't delete using the delete key or using the mouse to delete. It is still working on everything else except it won't let me delete. I can go any place in my in folder an click on an item and it comes up with no problem. I tried deleting them one at a time and in a group but it didn't make any difference. I have XP. I have all of these messages coming in and I need to have this problem solved. Please help if you can. Thank you!! Hugs ~ Dottie

is there anybody out there that can help her please

I gather these messages are spam? If so, tell her to look on Google for anti-spam software, that should hopefully ease if not solve the problem.

If crooksmoorlad's suggestion doesn't work try typing sfc /scannow in to the 'run' box so that the system file checker can check for corrupted files. It should then try to fix them :)

If you are running XP as well, Deecee, you can set up "Remote Assistance" and sort the problem for her!

Deecee, not wishing to presume or seem impolite but do you personally know 'Dottie'? If you do, is this her problem or another 'friend'.

The reason I ask is that the text of the email you posted smacks remarkably of hoax emails, sent out purely as time-wasting rubbish.

My apologies if I have misinterpreted this but I would be suspicious if I received this directly from someone who I did not 'know' :suspect:

simonj,
Yes you have misinterpreted the whole thing, Dottie is a personal friend. I repeat my answer posted to Rich, these are not emails she wants to delete but files in her pc

thanks cgksheff, the problem there is that of the time difference between us (in Sheffield UK) and the USA, and plus I wouldn't even know where or how to begin
thanks anyway

It's a well known problem with XP :gag:

Usually some files delete but with others you get the error message "Cannot delete this file as it is in use". This happens regularly with me

Have a look at this page (http://www.softwarepatch.com/tips/howto-delete-xp.html) for some tips.

Have a look at this page (http://www.softwarepatch.com/tips/howto-delete-xp.html) for some tips. I occasionally have similar problems, i.e. I try to delete something, but I get a message saying that the file is in use. My solution is to reboot straight away, not open anything, and attempt to delete the file again....sometimes I find that the file has already been deleted, but it wouldn't show until after the reboot, and at other times, the file can be deleted with no problem after the reboot.

deecee, you haven't said what type of files your friend is trying to delete....if they are program files, then she needs to delete them using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel....or she can use the uninstall program which she may find in the Start Up Program menu.
