View Full Version : Weight Loss Calorie/Fat Intake
Bargainz 08-01-2011, 12:25 I currently weight 15st 10 and my new years resolution is to lose weight.
Up until this week my daily calorie intake was around 2,600, My daily fat intake was around 95-100g and my daily sugar intake was around 100g+
I want to lose around 5-7 pounds a week if possible.
Over the last few days my calorie intake has been around 1,650, My daily fat intake has been around 45-50g and my daily sugar intake has been around 50g.
On that intake above should i lose 5-7 pounds a week?
No. You might for the first couple of weeks though (mainly water retention from eating salty/ fatty foods). Neither is it possible or safe to lose 7 pounds in a week long term. If it was possible you could loose 2 stone in a month! If that was the case everyone would be skinny :hihi:
When dieting I eat 1200 calories a day, this allows me to loose a max of 2 pounds safely each week, I don't have much to loose and am already within my healthy BMI I just prefer to be towards the lower end of my BMI. To maintain my weight I need to eat 2356 calories a day (I'm tall). It is not advised to go above 2 pounds loss a week long term and is very hard to do so without you feeling ill or wasting larger amounts of muscle instead of fat.
The weight did not go on in a couple of weeks, neither will it come off in a couple of weeks!
Shef_Fitness 08-01-2011, 13:21 Its certainly not unsafe to loose weight fast, it simply depends how you achieve your goals. In the sessions that we run, people have lost a stone inside 4 weeks, and NOT ONE of these people has suffered any side effects.
In fact many feel much better than they did before, with greater energy levels and better all round.
If people are feeling ill through dieting, its probably because there body is crying out for more food
Bargainz 08-01-2011, 13:46 My target is to get to 12 stone 7 by the end of May.
sumayyah 08-01-2011, 14:16 try a vlcd. even then they say its a stone a month you can lose ( generally more the first month )

To loose 7 pounds a week through lack of food only which is what the OP is suggesting is unworkable in my view.
You should be looking at 2-3 pounds a week MAX. But dont concentrate on fat as being bad, saturated fat YES, but good fats will help you lose weight. Also try and UP your protein intake and bringing carbs down, especially white bread, pasta, rice etc.
Plenty of studies show that if you cut calories drastically at first you will gain the weight you lost PLUS as you start to introduce old foods into your diet. Its where the calories come from that is key.
focusedhypno 09-01-2011, 14:40 Well done Bargainz on wanting 2011 to be a healthier year.
I have never been overweight by a significant amount but over the last few years I have seen on a professional basis a number of people who wanted to lose weight. I can honestly say that some of those people have had significant and life changing reductions in their weight. I'm not claiming any credit for this though, it was all down to them and the choices they made and wanted to make.
I thought I would share one tip that I have had back from those people who have managed to lose weight and, more importantly, to keep it off.
The people who had the biggest shift in their approach to food never looked at the change as "being on a diet". Using these words has become a short hand way of saying that you are restricting your intake of certain foods or food groups but that this is to achieve a certain amount of weight loss and once that goal has been reached then you won't need to be on a diet any more. The problem with this thinking though is that it doesn't seem to help most people in the long term.
Everyone is always "on a diet" because your diet is just what you eat. If you change your relationship with food (consciously or sub consciously) you aren't "on a diet" but you are being more thoughtful about what you eat and why. By being aware of the emotional reasons why you might be eating certain foods at certain times and possibly in too large an amount it is possible to eat the right amount of food to be happy and healthy and to also gradually and sensibly lose weight.
Good luck with your plans to be healthier, with the right thoughts about your goal you have a great chance of making it a reality.
Id agree with the above, its about having a healthier lifestyle rather than seeing a diet as something that must be endured.
tooenvee 11-01-2011, 12:59 hey is no less than 1600 calories for men and 1200 calories for women right?
Shef_Fitness 11-01-2011, 15:19 Everyone is different, some people need more food than others so you can't say x amount of calories if you are a man, or x amount of calories if you are a woman.
Your lifestyle also comes into it.
In a mans case, if one man worked in the IT department, and another worked as a bricklayer the bricklayer would need more food due to the amount of energy he requires to do his work.
BMI means absolutely nothing. You could take one man who is 6ft tall, weighs 11.5 stone, leads a sedentary lifestyle and his BMI is perfect, yet another man (a rugby player) who is 6ft tall and weighs 18 stone, he is obese according to the BMI - I would put all my money on the obese rugby player wiping the floor in every department when it came to any fitness test.
I agree BMI is only good for 'average' people. I am pretty average so it works well for me :)
My calories are all worked out according to my height, weight and activity levels and I use a heart monitor to work out as accurately as I can calories burnt via excerise.
I think it helps some people to use calories as it is a simple way to work things out without restricting diet or having to follow plans which I personally just find too restrictive. I like to excerise more so I can eat more :) and calorie counting and excerise is the simple way if your doing it on your own and trying to get a good balance between the two.
It has helped me learn which foods I should moderate and which foods I should eat more of which will hopefully become habit eventually.
If you managed to lose weight so quickly your skin might get saggy [and stay that way].
Shame we can't get liposuction on the NHS.
Good luck with whatever you do, but don't make yourself ill.
