View Full Version : Promoting Sheffield...
jimmycat 09-02-2004, 13:37 Hi all,
I've been sponsored by the Rotary Club to visit Brazil in the Spring. I'll be doing lots of presentations, part of which will be saying something about modern life in Sheffield.
Apart from the obvious - Steel Industry, CIQ, student games, football / rubgy / ice hockey teams etc - could anyone suggest things I could talk about?
Cheers all.
Take a copy of the Full Monty with you on either video or DVD... if that doesn't get them, nowt will :D
Sheffield, England...prime occupations for residents include unemployment and stripping.
Mind you, after seeing the state of the actors taking their kit off in that film we might have a campaign for 100% unemployment on our hands.
jimmycat 09-02-2004, 14:33 I thought of trying to get hold of the promo video used at the beginning of the full monty...
is it available online anywhere?
That always makes me giggle...
Why not show them "Threads"?

I haven't seen it online anywhere, but I think they sell it in that second hand book/CD shop on Division Street.
2 large universities, some excellent theatres, Meadowhall(?), loads of parks.
Do a search of the forum for a thread called 'Sheffield Superlatives' - that might give you some more ideas.

I think this video ("Sheffield - City on the Move") was re-released last year (or the year before?). The Star Shop or Sheffield Scene on Surry Street or Don Alexander on Ecclesall Road or www.made-in-sheffield.com may stock it?
I work for the City centre management team on the council, they're all for promotion of sheffield (especially free promotion), let me see what I can get hold of for you. I will pm you with anything I can get.
DM:thumbsup:
How about boasting about Sheffield being on the edge of lovely and scenic countryside? Oh, better not..... the council want to put giant wind turbine farms all over it.
Meh, the council are idiots... I mean, they don't want people to take their cars into town, yet they're knocking stuff down to make car parks, something which ENCOURAGES use of cars.
Bloody silly hypocrites.
cosywolf 09-02-2004, 23:37 Sheffield is (one of?) the greenest city in Europe? Home to loads of wildife-rich greenspaces within the city itself. It also boasts quite possibly the largest amount of ancient woodland within the boundaries of any city in Europe.
There, that's something to be proud of!
Cosy:D
Hallam (not Ecclesall) - one of the wealthiest places in the UK.

It's called The Reel Monty and you can definitely get it at the Star Shop on York Street.

Ecclesall is part of Hallam and is also one of the wealthiest areas in the Hallam constituency itself. I know you might not like the fact I live there, but get over it and lose the pathetic cheap shots.

well maybe if you stopped leaving yourself wide open with your juvenile bragging all the time, people may not find the need to take a pot shot at you

Hehe... ummm, well I think that you will find that Ecclesall is not in the Hallam Ward.
Hey and guess what, I don't have a problem with you living in Ecclesall - do you think that I am jealous?

I think you will find the Ecclesall ward is in the Hallam constituency, which is what is referred to as being "wealthy" in the studies that show it, e.g. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2002/08/14/nshef114.xml . There is of course the Hallam WARD (afterall, the Hallam constituency is made up of 4 wards - Ecclesall, Dore, Hallam and Broomhill - but you'd know that wouldn't you?). Ecclesall is probably a wealthier ward than Hallam, but less so than Dore, but there have been no studies into the wealth of the individual wards. I think you need to learn the difference between a council ward and a parliamentary constituency.
For more info on Hallam constituency: http://www.electiondata.telegraph.co.uk/pcon512.htm
Hehe...umm.... so how long exactly have you been thinking that the WARD of Hallam is known nationally for its affluence when infact its the CONSTITUENCY of Hallam, which covers nearly all of SW Sheffield? Get your facts right in future.

Hmm I think that you will find that I knew that all along - but thanks for the lesson in local politics!
Check my posts carefully for any reference that I was talking about the Hallam constituency. I will admit that I did write it so that you drew that conclusion. Maybe it was those G&T's I had last night that got the devil in me
But it does show how easy you are to tease :D T020 baiting is fast becoming a Sheffield Forum sport :D Sorry - I will behave.
jimmycat 12-02-2004, 11:12 OK I'm fairly new to the Sheffield forum... is the car bloke's

It can be.
It all started a long time ago and went on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on for ages and ages and ages and ages and ages and ages and ages and it all got rather tedious.
For some hiistory read this thread : http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1244&perpage=15&pagenumber=1
He doesn't really get going until a few pages in.

Aye carumba! just read through the whole thread, now I need to lay down in a dark room!
Jimmycat, I have asked about the promo vids and they should get back to me next week on them, I think there's a new one on the city living which has the old wards brewery in Ecclesall  :D :P
Classic Rock 12-02-2004, 13:34 STOOOOOPPP! Before I roll off my chair laughing again at this old battle - it just pops up in any old thread - start one about cabbages and someone'll turn it into a fight about allotments being of better class in Ecclesall than elsewhere. So funny.
Ahem, where was I....?
Oh right, Sheffield First for Investment www.makeitinsheffield.com (http://) have lots of useful info about the glorious city and general feel good stuff which appeals to foreigners thinking of coming to the city.
theflyingfish 12-02-2004, 14:02 1/3 of the city lies within Britain's oldest national park - there's something there - visual as well. Or bearing in mind the rotary club see themselves as philanthropists, how about something about urban regeneration and the plans for sheffield?
Sam Miguel 12-02-2004, 15:06 Let's not forget that these people will be more interested in England itself rather than Sheffield. I would get together a slide show of typical scenes. Just get the good bits. A nice panoramic view over the city centre, some views from the top of the Hallamshire hospital.
Bishop's house, Graves Park, Ecclesall Woods, Ecclesfield Square. Show them the houses we live in, terraced houses, semis, detatched, Hyde park flats. Show them pubs, theatres, shops - at Meadowhall and the city centre. Show them the surrounding countryside, the football grounds and Don Valley Stadium.
I bet they would love to see stuff like that.
theflyingfish 12-02-2004, 18:44 I would be disappointed if a Brazilian came over here and only talked about a provincial city, or the 4th biggest in Brazil - I would be thinking - eh but what about the rainforest, and Rio and salvador!!
So they may think wh what about London, Liverpool etc etc?
jimmycat 13-02-2004, 13:43 I know where you're coming from, but as I'm being sent as a representative of this Rotary district, it's my job to promote and talk about Sheffield... it wouldn't be appropriate for me to talk about scummy old London and other cities.
eh up surely promotion in this day and age is all about marketing anyhow ''isn't it'' look at a few of the cities good points , leisure and sport, culture, advanced manufacturing and the people and add a bit of branded hype using a glossy approach... look at Dasani water this week released for a cute 90 p a bottle when it is just tap water,,, but coca cola use their marketing muscle to bring the idea into the forefront ( with a bit of retailer manipulation as well I bet) .... vist the Sheffield first website for an idea on marketing...
xr
Make it up! Does it really matter what you say if you got a free trip to Brazil out of it? Tell them Sheffield steel spouts from volcanoes in the peak district, that cutlery is picked from the knife and fork orchards by the Don, that Sheffield Wednesday won the Europ...oh, sorry, the last bit is far fetched. But what the hell, invent it.
