View Full Version : Shiregreen Hotel is now closed
chocotiger 08-11-2005, 13:18 I've just been past the Shiregreen Hotel and the metal shutters are going up.
Hurray at last
May be it will get demolished along with the eye sore of an old petrol station at the side of it.
I hope so :D

another thread mentioned the sicey closing, what's happening to all the pubs around this area, timber top up for lease, white horse up for lease, five archers and forty foot might as well be up for lease.
at least three have been pulled down over the last 10 years.
why is there no where decent you can go without getting mugged, stabbed or god forbid shot.

Hurray at last???
Ever been in there and had a quality night.. . I know I've had shedloads. . cheap beer, 20p a game of pool, some decent local people . . .
Jeez not the shiregreen. Ok it`s a bit of a dive now but back in the late 70`s early 80`s i had some really good nights with my mates in there with ray the landlord. As a nipper my dad used to take me down there where i wated for hoim outside the off licence part on the side near the tap room (anyone remember that) and he`d bring out a bottle of shandy for me. It`s also where he bought me some dutch currage for my first marriage and how i needed it :gag:

Used work there from 84 to 86.
Remember Ray and Linda well.Unfortunately after they left a succession of not so strict :suspect:landlords ,have resulted in a pub where alot of locals wouldn`t set foot in.
Its a shame really the area could do with a half decent local but I am sure we won`t get one ,probaly some more `apartments` :hihi:
Went in there religiously in late 70s when Ray and Linda ran it.
Remember the tuesday night disco's in the back room.
scampi meals at lunch time.
That old juke box in the back room saw a few nudges and kicks in its time. happy days.
Agree with you jayjay i guess the nearest "local" will have to be in ecclesfield. Back in the seventies we always started a pub crawl from the shiregreen. We then went to the travellers on the common then to the greyhound for a lovely pint of wards. Used to miss the ball out then go to the square and go in all four. From there a walk back up barnsley road to the huntsman and if we had time or could still stand back down hartley brook to the shiregreen for the last one before time was called. Happy days.

welcome to the forum Brucie
 not aware of any muggings in the southey social, only know of the fleecing from the bar staff.
usually minor scuffles in there on sundays but the big brave lads on the committee sort them out :suspect:
as for shootings none yet but with all the snide fags and dvds being sold who know's
Hopefully they can now put some executive appartments on the site as we are short of those and should try to cram 20 or 30 onto every empty bit of land we can find.

When I went passed the Huntsman yesterday there was a sign up saying land aquired by Jaguar Estates.
These are the same people who have built the apartments further up Barnsley Road on the old petrol station land.

Are you a regular then? Don't you recommend it for a night out
fridgeman 10-11-2005, 13:00 :P wouldn't say i'm a regular tend to miss monday to thursday dinners due to being chained to the desk, might pop in friday dinner finish around 2 so seeing as they are open while five i usually try one, also tend to miss tuesday nights now that the quiz has finished (think it was over the heads of the locals) and wednesdays, so really i'm only a part timer mostly spent in the snooker room. :D
Can anyone remember the husband and wife that used to sell the Green un outside the off sales at the shiregreen hotel many moons ago. Just been talking to my mum and she says this was her aunt and uncle. Mr & mrs wragg.

You could get shot. I went to a job just down the road, A shooting around 1997.
It was a family feud. No names mentioned, the lad involved went to prison.
