The new bar on Mappin Street where the old Revolution used to be.
Just wondering if anyone had been in yet and what you thought of it? :)

Just wondering if anyone had been in yet and what you thought of it? :) jackthedog 09-02-2004, 11:14 It's like the old Revolution, but uses the space a bit better (as opposed to filling the entire building with a huge bar, leaving no room for customers). There is an area at the front where your supposed to sit on the floor, bit daft I reckon, but maybe that's how they do it in Vietnam(?) If you liked the old Revolution, you'll probably like it. fnkysknky 09-02-2004, 14:31 It's ok, as pointed out the space is used better but I actually preferred the old setup - enjoyed being a lazy git on the sofas next to the door. Was full to the rafters when I went in but think it might have been at New Year. Oh you get all the Bintang, Tiger etc. beers n all if that appeals to you?!? jackthedog 10-02-2004, 09:44 If you do go in, check out the statue behind the bar. I'm sure there is a CCTV camera peeking out of whatever it's holding in it's hand. I used to love the old Revolution, it was warm and cosy, and despite it's posh reputation, we always had a good laugh in there, the bouncers were always cool and ther was little bother. I hope the new place can keep this up. fnkysknky 10-02-2004, 10:03 Posh reputation? Not so sure about that - I used to be sprawled across the sofas in there regular :) Bouncers were great though, never had any trouble in there. Like you I'm not too sure about the new setup. jackthedog 10-02-2004, 10:10 Not so much posh, but it had a bit of an upper class image compared with the other student pubs around that area. A lot of my mates from college wouldnt go in there cos they thought it was poncey. So it was always the Cavendish. Ugh. I too was a regular sofa-by-the-fire-sprawler, I remember our disdain when we had to sit on the wooden pews further up because 'outsiders' were on all the sofas.! fnkysknky 10-02-2004, 10:28 Yeah see what you mean, wasn't exactly a pre-bar to Corporation was it :) Baldyshef 15-02-2004, 23:58 I was in there last night....I really liked the place..Sadly I wasnt expecting to go out so i was without much cash..Shame, i wanted to try some of the asian beer and the cool cocktails rather than coke :/ Edd 16-02-2004, 20:06 Ive been in there a few times since it reopened. I dont spend as much time in there as I did the old revolution, i find it a bit dark. All the same (lovely) bar-staff are there though, and the food is pretty good. Go on in and pat the buddas belly for me ;) scatterheart 16-02-2004, 20:11 I have been in now and I think it's lovely! I've seen it get quite busy on a week night but we go at sort of 7 or 8ish and there are usually seats free, just as busy as I like it. I love the big chairs and cushions I think it's so comfy and homely. It is a bit dark yes, but I like that of an evening ;) mr craig 16-02-2004, 21:14 I'm in there quite often, i really like it.I think its a lot better during the week,fri/sat it tends to get just to busy! Unfortunately we'd just eaten, as the people on the next table ordered food and it looked really scrummy. I'll be going back for a sample some time soon. mr craig 16-02-2004, 23:10 The food is really nice. Baldyshef 17-02-2004, 02:00 Originally posted by mr craig The food is really nice. What kind of food is it? Is the food in keeping with the asian theme? mr craig 17-02-2004, 15:07 Originally posted by Baldyshef What kind of food is it? Is the food in keeping with the asian theme? Very much so,lots of noodle and rice based dishes, comparable to East One in terms of quality.I think that during the week theres an all you can eat buffet, only at lunch times tho. :( scatterheart 17-02-2004, 15:13 Yes I've seen the notice for that, was it 4:30 til 7:30? Or am I completely off the mark there? Arkybones 19-02-2004, 14:29 Yes, Bia Hoi has a market menu in which customers pay around 4 pounds for an all you can eat buffet between 12:30-3:30. They also do another buffet between 4:30-7:30 with a pint of Kirian (sp?) for a slightly higher price. The menu mostly consists of rice and noodle dishes, but they also have some great tasting baguette sandwiches and appetizers. Baldyshef 19-02-2004, 14:58 Originally posted by Arkybones Yes, Bia Hoi has a market menu in which customers pay around 4 pounds for an all you can eat buffet between 12:30-3:30. The market menu is also available on sundays now, same times and price(£3.95).The later buffet is actually better value at £5,seen as its £2.80 a pint i think,Kirins a nice drink to. bassman-x 22-02-2004, 10:38 i've been a few times and really like it as somewhere to have a chilled out drink, nice and comfortable, relaxing and with mellow tunes on. However I have found the food to be poor, whoever said that it is comparable to east one in terms of quality, you are way off! I have had one good meal there, but others have been average and very poor, but none anywhere near close to the fantastic east one. Also thought that the food was quite pricey for what you got. I wouldn't eat there again, haven't tried this buffet deal though. my 2p... Jayne 23-02-2004, 13:13 I just had the buffet thing for my lunch - there were 2 noodle based dishes and one rice one. I wouldn't say it was as good as East One, but for 3.95 it is definitely very good value - I had 3 bowls of noodles and am not going to need food for a long while! It's on from noon - 3. GazB 08-03-2004, 16:35 How much are the drinks in there? Coke? Double Vodka n Red bull? A red bull? JD and coke? Bottles of lager? Bottles of pop (WKD's etc)? Gaz evildrneil 08-03-2004, 19:02 Drinks prices are probably a lil bit over what you would pay in say The Scream or other studenty bar - but I really like the place - especially the bit with all the rugs and bolsters which I actually find more comfortable than the sofas :o Baldyshef 08-03-2004, 19:16 3 quid a pop for smirnoff ice and the like :o :o |
