1: aldi!

...marks and spencers quality at netto prices!

2: tesco!

...e.g. razors 17p, lightbulbs 18p, sponges 14p

3: netto!

...all the fun of a run-down council estate!

4: marks and spencers!

...they call you 'sir' so much that you half expect to meet the queen with a sword and a footstool!

5: waitrose!

...ups the chances of meeting a rich benefactor in the aisle!

Tesco = for the airmiles.
Sainsburys = nectar points (saved up for Christmas)
Co-op = It's the nearest supermarket from our remote holiday hideway in the Welsh mountains (i.e., a 20 mile return journey for milk, bread, etc.).
Netto = dead handy, as it's just around the corner from my house
Waitrose = but only for the terrific bargain buys 15 mins before closing time!

1. Asda - go there most of the time because it's close-by and quite good value. It really irritates me though when I can't get the things I want, or the brand that I want (usually go late at night when it's quiet)

2. Morrisons - as above, but don't go very often because it's not 24 hour

3. Sainsbury's - better quality produce, but pricey and I stopped going because I was over-charged nearly every time I went

4. Tesco's - I'd go more often if there was one nearer to me, when I do shop at Tesco's it's usually on-line

5. Co-op, there's one in the village and it's handy if I just need a pint of milk. Too pricey for a main shop though

5 - Marks and Spencer
4 - Waitrose
3 - Selfridges Foodhall
2 - 50/50 - Harrods Foodhall or 5th floor of Harvey Nics
1 - Fortnum and Mason

(But my number one refuse to deliver, so I do have to go into 'Town' every so often. What a chore!)

Co-op .. as its in town and clsoe to work, plus they stock weightwatchers items

Jack Fultons .. as they stock weightwatchers chips and other useful items.

Asda ... but only when I can bothered to catch the bus.

and thats it, the local shop 2 mins away keeps us going.

or thought of another .. fruit from the markets.

1. Asda @ Handsworth - 5 mins away from town... Just pop on the parkway... 24hrs, lots of choice... Nice range of clothes and home items...

2. Budgens - My local shop... It saves the day for cashback, loaves of bread and pints of milk... They always seem to have some good offers on too :)

3. Morrisons @ Catcliffe - Petrol trip and shopping trip rolled into one. Lots of BOGOFS and tends to be quite cheap.

4. Tesco @ Abbeydale - Huuuuge! Only been here once or twice but enjoyed the variety... Seems a bit bare... Like it's just a few isles plonked in a warehouse, but nethertheless it makes a change, seeing as I know my way around Asda all too well! Shoddy clothes collection though - no changing rooms? (I couldnt find any)

5. M&S - Good for a few treats. Pricey, but a nice change when I'm feeling flush :P Treats at Crimbo tend to come from here :)

Tesco Express (aka Tardis) - cos it's round the corner and they seem to stock everything in that little place - no need at all to go to any big supermarket!

And most of the ASDA "Extra special" stuff is exactly the same as M&S (and Sainsburys and Tesco) food, but in a different packet, even the descriptions/instructions are the same.

There are a limited number of factories producing all the food for all the supermarkets, the only difference is the packet, and what we pay for it.

So true Nick2, most of the major supermarkets use pack houses in Lincolnshire who just change their packaging machine labels to suit whichever company they are working for that hour.

Small Tesco - just across the road
Farmfoods - just around the corner
Morrisons - for a big shop
Spar - when everything else shut but far too expensive
Big Tesco - for clothes, toys, birthday pressies etc

ASDA - mainly once a week
Waitrose - it's the nearest supermarket if I've forgot something and they sell Baklava
Sainsburys - on the Moor, if I need something and I'm walking past on my way home

Don't realy go anywhere else.

I don't think I could afford to buy all that stuff from M&S.

Their lobster prices are obscene.

JonJParr
09-11-2005, 11:28
Well they are rather obscene but Christmas comes but once a year.

This is true, and after all the money you spend on other people you need to treat yourself (I'm just checking-out the Fortnum & Masons hampers :) )

I live in the centre and don't own a car, so I'm relatively limited to what supermarkets I can use. I could get a bus or taxi there but I dislike not walking to places because it makes me feel lazy.

My favourite supermarket is therefore Sainsburys on the Moor, as they have the best selection of things. Saying that though, I've never tried Waitrose on Ecclesall Road for a full shop, so I'm not sure how good they are.

Somerfield opposite the Peace Gardens isn't bad, but doesn't have the range of items that Sainsburys has. The Spar on Division street is pretty poor. I'm quite fond of Tesco on West Street because of it's opening hours. It also has a reasonable range of stuff. I find it a bit frustrating that there isn't a bigger supermarket in the centre that's open past 7pm in the week. If either Sainsburys or Somerfield opened until 8pm, it'd be a lot more convenient for me. :)

1. Waitrose
2. Morrisons
3. Asda
4. Tesco or Sainsbury's both just as bad
5. M&S - Hugely overpriced for food that really isn't very high quality. They used to be great but now their sandwiches are stale, the chicken, especially ready cooked, tastes like and has the consistency of rubber (and £6 for two breasts!!!), and all their ready meals taste identical. Their fruit and veg is usually past its best by the time you get it home. :gag:

I think ready meals from most places are pretty crap, high in salt, sugar and fat and generally all the scrag-end meat "bits".

Nice Price on Chesterfield Rd and soon in Clowne: Run by very friendly folk and have interesting products.

Tai Sun off the moor: Great for creamed coconut, soy sauce, tofu.

Home Bargins on the moor: noodles, naans, beer, christmas prezzies.

Morrisons, Meadowhead or Catcliffe: For the big shop.

Lembas off Valley Rd: bulk cereal, pulses, pesto, stock and a few goodies from the scarey freezer room, don't get locked in.

Much as I'd like to think better of M&S ready meals Nick I think you're right. I'm not so sure about the comment made by Twiglet that they all taste the same though.
