hello

I am planning to route my Broadband connection around my house which has 3 floors.

I would like some advice to which wireless router would be best and where it would be best positioned in the house.

Any help would be great,

Thanks!

I'm not sure what router we use (I'll find out when my housemate wakes up!!) But it's positioned on the first (middle) floor and we get either "good" or "excellent" signal all the time.

linksys is a manufacturer i'd highly recommend.

as for position, you'd be best having a central position, so its equally spaced between all three pc's, keep it about 3 metres away from other electrical equipment, especially things like microwaves, fluorescent lights, keep away from shiny surfaces such as mirrors.

the best thing to do though is do it by trial and error, so start off in a central position, but of one of the connections is slow, or keeps dropping alot, then move it around

I use a D-Link, DSL-G604T and it reaches from the groundfloor to the attic room and also to a house 2 doors down who share our internet.

If there ever was a problem with reach, the aerial is a screw in jobby so could always replace it with a better aerial.

I have always DLink and Netgear to both be good wireless routers. I have succesfully set up many DLink routers in three floor Victorian houses.

That said, I did have a problem getting a decent signal with a 604T between adjacent rooms in one old houes. But this may have had something to do with a combination of thick walls, shelves if books on either side of the wall and the user sitting in direct line of the signal from his laptop.

I think the general rule of thumb is don't go for some cheap brand. Stick with the quality known brands such as the above or Buffalo, Belkin, Linksys etc. Always worth paying that little bit more.

Hi
I live in a 3 floor house and have a Netgear 54mg router on the top floor. Sometimes the signal will drop out when I'm on the ground floor. You should consider one of the new 108mg wireless routers. These are faster but also have a greater range as well. Here's the netgear one but other manufacturers sell them as well.

yeah ive looking into the netgear ones, as ive been told they are very easy to set up, even for a blonde like me!

Just wondering how the siganl varies and what weakens it too? Was think of putting in the front room on the 1st floor.

the length the signal travels weakens it, how many walls it travels through, if there's shelves furniture in its path, how thick your walls are, electrical equipment interefering with it a whole range of things can cause weak signals etc.

personally i find netgears easy to use, but they're prone to problems, things like locking up, resetting themselves etc

Have you looked at Draytek's products? They are a little bit more expensive but very well made. I've had a 2600we since wireless came out and it's been spot on. It also has one of the best router firewalls I've ever seen.

I can strongly recommend these routers, I've installed about a dozen and the install was quick and painless with very good wireless coverage.

Amazon have a deal on at the minute where you get a free USB2 network adapter when you buy the router.

I live in a large 3 storey stone built Victorian house. I've got a Belkin 54g wireless router in the top floor, and it covers most rooms. However, the front room where I keep one of my computers is a dead spot, so I got one of these. (http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=123926)

Not cheap, but fast and very reliable.
