Should we Bring back the CITY NIPPER, At 10p a journey round town!
It used to be 2p when I was a kid so I'm allowing for inflation.Should we get rid of all the current Bus Companies and replace them with a City owned Scheme subsidised by the Council and Citizens, giving us Cheap fares, modern buses, reliable transport and well paid staff.

wasnt it called the city clipper and used those bendy bus things.

the subsidised bus fares were great before de-regulation, but i think the council were challenged in court about it following a challenge by londoners against their scheme. i may be wrong on this one but i thought the residents in more affluent areas were not happy with supporting transport for the masses

Yes, I think it was Clipper. Nipper was those little buses that changed their names to Eager Beavers.

I remember when such as the 52s up Crookes were called Eager Beavers.

And it's not THAT long ago.

It would be nice to have a real 'public' service back in sheffield. I wonder what Mr bus drivers thoughts are on this? We need something to suit the drivers aswell so they come back, the main problem with missing busses is the shortage of drivers, as for the ever increasing fares from first that needs sorting out now!

And get Stannington a reliable service while they're at it... Sorry to keep banging on about that but it's something I have a particular bee in me bonnet about.

Did you know that all bus journeys within the city centre shopping centre are only 20p?

This includes Sheffield station - West Street on route 60 and High Street to Moorfoot on routes 75/76 etc.

I doubt the old City Clipper would come back as I doubt they could justify the public subsidy it would require - I think the above current offer is the best we can expect, although it could do with a bit more publicity.

your all correct. I actually meant CityClipper not nipper.
And Andy C I Know it was 2p when it ended in service although it was free when it kicked off. as for it being cost effective think of the traffic problems it could solve. In fact ultra cheap bus fares anywhere in the city would make people think twice before driving.

You know what... I would be happy to pay a road charge, like London, if it subsidised a good free Clipper style circular service.

If they brought road charges up to Sheffield, people would moan and bitch like hell, us Northerners don't get paid as well as the Southern ponces sadly, that's why you get stuff like being able to afford a posh house in Fulwood for the price of a 2 bedroom semi in South London.

Nipper buses were still running at the same time as Eager Beavers were, as Rich say's Eager Beavers were on the Woodhouse to Crookes 52 bus route. They started about 1990ish and remember them giving away free Eager Beaver pin badges. They always used to turn up in a convoy of about 3 or 4 or more tailing each other along the route. Most of time you ended up standing or sitting on someones knee, oh and thrown forward every time the bus breaked.

From my memory when bus fares were cheap it ran a hell of a lot better than it did now.

I can remember that in the rush hour they would fill a double decker on the 81 route (from bentsgreen to town) and put an extra one on behind it which would also get full

Think how many cars that took of the road.

Probably worked because people trusted it more than they do now.
