Just to let you know that we are starting a karaoke competition at The Angel Pub, Rotherham Road, Killamarsh (Just next to Rother Valley Entrance).

Heats will be held every Sunday 8pm from Sunday 23rd January

It is free to enter, Please send us an email to confirm that you would like to enter to angelcompetition@live.co.uk. Remember Its Free To Enter But Registering By Email In Advance Is A Must!

We also have karaoke every friday night, so if you want to practice, we'd love to see you.

Approx 18,000 tracks , including very up to date songs but feel free to bring your own backing on cd or minidisc if you like.

Will the best singer definitely be the winner of your competition at the Angel? How can you ensure this?

I'm rather skeptical of these competitions. For example, I was in the Punchbowl, Crookes, a couple of weeks ago, when they had their karaoke final. In my opinion, the 'winner' was not the best singer of the night, and coincidentally, the landlady, who was judging the competition, appears to have endorsed the 'winners' video on the pub's facebook page, 6 days before the 'winner' even 'won' the competition! Hardly seems impartial to me!

It also makes me skeptical when it's a largish amount, like this, on offer, if it's not pre-determined, why not make it fairer, and share the pot with a first, second, and third?

Basically we are Radio Presenters on Local Radio (Redroad 102.4fm). The Angel has recently had a refurbishment and the new landlord and landlady decided to advertise the pub on the radio and asked for our help in trying to establish a Karaoke or Disco night on a regular basis, so thought a karaoke competition would be a good start!

We haven't run a Karaoke competition before and can see how it would have been more appealing to split the money! but we have advertised it now and so will try and twist the landlords arm to put up a couple of prizes for runners up.

It Will most definately be run fair.The landlady/landlord will NOT be taking part in any of the judging. A Redroad Presenter will alternate as one of the judges and if anyone is wanting to guest judge (who doesnt know anyone in the comp!) then feel free to email me at aj@redroadfm.com.

Yes it was the first competition they have had 2 now both fixes by the looks !

Is it really too late though, to tell your listeners, that after listening to feedback, it has been decided that it would be fairer to split the prize money between first, second, and third? To me, it instantly gives it more credibility that it's not all sewn up and going to somebody's mate.

Why not do 2011 battle of the Bands for Hallam FM, will have more street cred than karaoke. Yes, I'm a dj, but I love watching live music more, which I'm sure if the Angel gets a reputation as a venue, punters would come from miles around. Just look at West Street Live, they always appear to be doing well on the music scene.

Aren't you going to let people just turn up at the Heats then? Will you only let them enter one heat? I think if you let people just turn up, then, it will balance itself out ie. if you get a cracking singer on one week, and someone almost as good, but they don't get through, and then the next week they're all pretty mediocre, then you've not got the best singers through, but the great singer who didn't get through, can always come back next week, and try their luck? I'm just sounding things out, really, in case you'd not thought of that. I appreciate that it's a minefield!

Hi all the heats will be over 4 sundays and will allow people to re enter, there will be different judges each week and if someone doesnt make it through theyll have another chance with different judges, different preferences etc etc... yes you can turn up on the night however we can only fit in so many each heat so would be best to email your name at least! but anyone who wants to turn up is more than welcome

The first night went well for the first one we had 8 entries and five got through! some great singers! thanks all for coming!

That's a wiered competition 8 singers and 5 go through? the other 3 have a good chance of getting through on next heat.

2 out of 8 to go through sounds more realistic to me.

There should have been 10 entries that night, but 2 entrants wanted to change the night!

The way it will work is out of 10 people we will put 5 through from each of the 4 heats, then the two semi finals will have 10 people in each. These will then be halfed to another 5 people at each semi, so will leave 10 people in final which I think is the right amount of people to have in the final.

Please also remember that the point of this competition is to help establish the pub as it has a new landlord who has refurbished it etc... and if we only put 2 people through at a time then we wouldnt be getting the amount of people through doors etc... Thank you for your comments however.

We have looked at various ways of doing it and took on board lots of tips and help from everywhere and this was the best way.
