Old ground I know, but just thought I'd share this.

I went out in Leeds last night, as usual when I go there the night I go to is good and the crowd are sound.

Leaving the venue at about 4:30 this morning we had literally a 5 min walk back to the station.

We passed 2 groups fighting in the street, one guy trying to glass another guy, one waving a knife and the rest piling in.

Then a car pulls up, asks us directions, we say were not from Leeds, then they shout at the girls in our group "get in the back of the car bitches and spread your legs" and "f**k off back to where you came from"

Then we get to the station, one guy has a complete mashed up face and is staggering about....we go to buy tickets, and another guy is attempting to walk but his leg is clean snapped and flopping all over the place...it was sick.

Ah, what a relief it was to get back to Sheffield and see some smiling faces and get a few "good mornings" the way people do in Sheffield when you're out and about early for some reason.

As a city, I'll take Sheffield over Leeds every single time.

First train back was 5am...but it was via Doncaster

There were a few people on who had been out in Leeds...but not many, we had a carrage to ourselves.

Do you know, they sever you booze on trains at 5am. Gosh.

God, that sounds awful :gag: Beyond awful.

But that's how I tend to think of Leeds - ok, not quite as extreme as your experiences, but it is a nasty, violent city - there's no getting away from that.

Even in the middle of the day, I can feel an air of menace in the city centre, and some people do look at you funny, like they're eyeing you up for a mugging. I regard Harvey Nicks as an ocean of calm and sanity in the midst of a maelstrom!

To be honest, I wouldn't feel safe going out for the evening in Leeds, the stories I've heard of incidents at the bus station and the like. People behaving like animals.

No, no - give me Sheffield any/every day. It's not perfect, but hey, where is. Best decision I ever made, NOT to go and live in Leeds.

I hear you loud and clear Starsparkle.

The thing is Leeds does have a much better and varied nightlife, in my opinion. I've got mates there that put really good gigs and club nights on and the crowd they get is spot on, never once a sign of any trouble.

But, away from this, on the streets and in various other clubs and even in day to day life, it can be pure carnage.

I lived in Leeds for about 6 months. I had a great time when I was "doing stuff" like in said clubs and gigs above...but general day to day life was horrible.

Nothing happened to me but you could just feel an edge all the time. Hence I came back to Sheffield to visit one weekend and thought "sod this for a game of soldiers" and never went back to Leeds, apart from to pick my stuff up.

I spent 18 months working in Leeds; it's the only place I've ever known to have two Big Issue sellers fighting each other over a patch.

The London of the North? Yeah right, if you're referring to the huge number of homeless on its streets :|

Funnily enough, I lived in Harehills for 6 months (the Leeds equivalent of Page Hall) and didn't have any trouble there - no doubt all the steel gates over the front doors helped!

Tut tut, you should have rang the office.

Big Issue vendors are designated patches, they dont get to pick, or fight for them, as it would be.

The Big issue sellers in Sheffield are more friendly than those in Leeds, as a rule....saying that, there are lots of fake vendors in Leeds.

:hihi:

If two Big Issue sellers want to beat each other up, it's none of my concern!

I never experienced any trouble in Leeds city centre, but then I only ever went out in the daytime.

The city centre is clean and modern... but there's little else to do except shop - they don't have anything like our Peace Gardens.

Cities are the same the world over - you're always going to catch an unsavoury element every now and again

I've had to drive into the Sheffield city centre before at 3am to pick up my wife after a night out. She'd been scared by the number of fights she'd seen that evening. Mostly all kicks off in the Taxi ranks (because there aren't enought taxis to go round), but she's also seen men beating up women with no one around helping out..

Conversley, I've never had a problem going out in either Sheffield or Leeds (or anywhere else for that matter).

I hear what yr saying and I agree, to some extent.

I've lived in Newcastle, Leeds, Glasgow and Sheffield and spent a lot of times in other cities. You do see violence after a friday or saturday night out, there's no getting away from that.

But I'm not sure that Sheffield people realise what a trouble free city they live in compared to other major uk cities. Of course there is trouble in Sheffield, but in comparison it really is minimal to many other places.

As someone who has had countless nights out in both Leeds and Sheffield I can say without any hesitation that Sheffield is a walk in the park compared to what you face heading home after a night out in Leeds.

Saying that, dont let it stop you going, just take care and be aware of what's going on around you.
