I'm doing some research about the moors above Ringinglow, and I've been told by a local farmer that during the blitz a plane dropped a stick of bombs on this moor near Brown Edge Quarries. Has anyone heard anything about this, and has any idea where it happened?

Don't know about the bombs at Ringinglow but apparently it was a common practise to show lights in the countryside to make the bombers think they were bombing a built up area.

There's lots of bomb craters in the woods near Lightwood Lane at Norton.

You can see lots of bomb craters on the moors - those dumb German bombers huh? Go to the end of Lodgemoor - as soon as you get to the end of the road and proceed to Stannage Edge (walking) you'll see a few. Otherwise, stray off the path in the woods and you might stumble on some - I know there are some/lots in the woods across from Millhouses Park as I used to play there.

I believe a false 'town' of lights was built on the moors around Sheffield (and many other towns) to try and fool the bombers into thinking they had their target. They wre flying by dead reckoning usually and were never sure exactly where they were.
Sounds like they fooled one that time!
Some of the craters in the woods mentioned were caused by big old trees falling during the Gale
