Hiya, I've been onto Sky to see about getting connected and have been told that because I had a digibox in my last property, if I don't use that one, they'll have to charge me again for a new one. I don't have the box anymore.
Can I buy a digibox from a dealer or off ebay or something and would Sky then let me use that to connect to their services, even though it has been previously owned??

This is one aspect of Sky that is very poor. There are plenty of us out there who are technically competent to install and setup a system - in some cases just plug in a box to an existing dish.

But they insist on scrapping any gear you have and installing a new system.

It was the same with their new Freesat service when I enquired a few weeks ago. I had Sky a year or two ago, sold the box but kept the dish. Now I want to get a cheap box from Ebay and just buy a card from them, but they insist on the full £150 re-installation business.

I've got a 2nd hand digibox with the previous owner's card, would sky still insist on getting a new system or would they activate the old card for me?
the previous owner has said they would verify that I've bought the box from them.

I'm not sure this is quite correct. I moved into a house that had a dish recently, but I didn't have a box. So I bought one second hand from Ebay for £20 and just paid Sky £20 for the viewing card. They didn't ask anything about what box I would be using - in fact they didn't even mention the equipment or installation at all.

That's great to know, thought I'd have to mess about buying a box from Sky, but if i can do it this way, it'll be cheaper

I did the same thing when we moved in here. Installed a satellite system, rang Sky and set up a new account right there on the phone. Waited for the new card to arrive and away we went :)
