View Full Version : Are you happy at work? duffman 05-02-2004, 19:52 Are we happy with our jobs? What would your ideal job be? Edit: what was your best/worst job? Sam Miguel 05-02-2004, 20:00 It's not so much my job, it's the company I work for - and how I have been treated just lately - which is driving me out after almost 13 years of loyal service. I need a new challenge. t020 05-02-2004, 20:03 Voted "No, hate it" even though I don't work, being a final year student. Had to vote in order for it to show the results - can this problem be fixed Geoff? Most polls have a link to "view results" so that you don't have to vote to get to them. Update: Just realised I could've pressed View Results after seeing another poll I'd not yet voted on. I'm sure it didn't show the option to view results on this though. Must be going blind in my old age.. Grissom 05-02-2004, 20:08 I love working where I do; have got a secondment doing what I have been doing unofficially anyhows the past year and a half off my own back. Start in few weeks. Can't wait ! kittykat 05-02-2004, 20:11 I absolutely love my work although i dont know how long it will last im sure ill get fed up of the long, unsociable hours after a few years. Working for the NHS means meeting loads of different people everyday - its sad at time when you see people who arent going to survive but they are the minority - most people come and go and you know they wont be back again for a very very long time. The only bad thing is the lack of pay. pretty_woman 05-02-2004, 20:12 I do i cant help it ,i get to help kids all day and have a laugh with them and get job satifaction when all your patience pays off "ahhh now i get it miss" cool and i also get to play out at playtime only to get slaughtered at basket ball by 8 year olds but i love it !!!!! :D  :help: :headbang: kids are so coooooooooooooooooooooooooool! t020 05-02-2004, 20:15 Originally posted by pretty_woman I do i cant help it ,i get to help kids all day and have a laugh with them and get job satifaction when all your patience pays off "ahhh now i get it miss" cool and i also get to play out at playtime only to get slaughtered at basket ball by 8 year olds but i love it !!!!! :D  :help: :headbang: kids are so coooooooooooooooooooooooooool! Funny, I thought you mentioned on the chat room that you were a cleaner? :loopy:  To be honest, I can't ever imagine liking a job - its just something you have to do. I doubt many people would CHOOSE to work. Mosherchik 05-02-2004, 20:18 I kinda like my job.... the work isnt exactly taxing and the pay is ok, the staff are great people to work with and although its an old cliche I would miss them when I leave even some of the customers are ok...when they arent threatening to decapitate me! Only problem I have with my job is I have quite unsociable hours :( Grissom 05-02-2004, 20:23 Originally posted by t020 Funny, I thought you mentioned on the chat room that you were a cleaner? :loopy:  Get wiv da program dude - she aint done that for some time AFAIK. pretty_woman 05-02-2004, 20:31 yes i used to clean to make ends meet in fact i held down 2 jobs untill i was offered full time at school .ok sir what do you do apart from bug the life out off ppl you piece of **** oh i forget your a rentboy aint you !!!!!!!!!!!!keep your nose out of my face you useless excuse for a human :loopy: :loopy: :loopy Sidla 05-02-2004, 20:39 Originally posted by t020 To be honest, I can't ever imagine liking a job - its just something you have to do. It would get very boring if you were sat on your own trying to kill time all the while. duffman 05-02-2004, 20:39 O.K pretty woman I know how you feel with those comments, my parents were out of work for 5 years and then all my mum could get was a cleaning job, now my dad works on the social services (poorly paid job) and my mum works in health care, i'm the highest earner in the house but when people slag off low paid jobs i just try and explain how they got us through a s**t time, I don't want this to turn into a my jobs better than yours argument and the class/pay thing again! Anyway if you don't mind me asking where is it do you work? mr craig 05-02-2004, 20:49 I hate it,i despise having to get up in the morning to go there and hope everyday that the place burns to the ground during the night. Its not just the job i hate the people i work for are complete a*** holes and treat everyone who works for them like crap. As for my idea job i've been thinking about that a lot lately and i'm still not sure. Sam Miguel 05-02-2004, 20:51 I hope you feel better for that! *Twinkle* 05-02-2004, 20:58 I used to work part time as a sales assistant, but packed it in as it was way too much hassle. I had to travel all the way to meadowhall, fight my way through the crowds just to get in the shop, end up all flustered and stressed by prams and slow walkers... Oh yeah and have a stressful, bossed about day when I got in the shop. Oh yes and there was this supervisor who decided I was capable of doing 6 jobs at once... She had me on the till, then when someone wanted a piercing, she had me stopping serving, running over, doing the piercing, then tidying the shop floor as I went, telling customers about the sale and asking them if they were alright, as I handed out baskets and managed to catch my breath! Yes, it would seem as though I was the only one in that shop, however most of my colleagues had their mates in for chats whilst I was skivvy! Oh yes, I forgot to mention, despite me making it clear that I live 2 buses away from meadowhall (1 hour trip) and having no means of transport myself, they still made me do the late shift EVERY week almost....also the fact that my Father's a postman, therefore picking me up at 10.30pm when he has to be at work at 4.30am is somewhat unreasonable, and the fear that I may get attacked is all too much for me. Something would be done, they said. It never happened so off I went. I deserve much better than that. duffman 05-02-2004, 21:06 I too have sufferd the horror of working at Meadowhell at christmas time! I also had two buses or tram and bus to get there but was constantly on the finishing shift and was having to get picked up in hillsborough! *Twinkle* 05-02-2004, 21:09 I too have sufferd the horror of working at Meadowhell Yep :( No-one wants to work on the late shifts, and its funny how I always got left with them, even when I specifically said I find it difficult to get home at that time for the reasons I've given in my last post... The company who my boyfriend work for are giving him all the finishing shifts too... So he's packing it in aswell... They'll learn.. :P duffman 05-02-2004, 21:17 Originally posted by caprice Yep :( No-one wants to work on the late shifts, and its funny how I always got left with them, even when I specifically said I find it difficult to get home at that time for the reasons I've given in my last post... SatanInHeels 05-02-2004, 21:25 yup.. they will always get sum1 else to do it.. im gonna b prayin tht they have got sum1 else doin caprice's boyf's shifts b4 i leave school this year!!! SatanInHeels 05-02-2004, 21:33 I dont mind work even thought it is in a supermarket and a lot of the staff hate it as I am by far the youngest there and dont have all that many hours to do (6 to be exact), or responsibilities as im not working on a specific department all the time. most of the people working there are very friendly and helpful, even thought i know maybe a few in particular that are not so nice to others! only job i have had really so cant really comment on others! duffman 05-02-2004, 21:39 I have worked in a supermarket, a shop, a stockroom and now well....the city centre itself is my workplace. The good thing is you will meet many people and learn from your experiences (good and bad), this will set you on your way (hopefully) to a job you like. t020 05-02-2004, 21:40 Originally posted by pretty_woman yes i used to clean to make ends meet in fact i held down 2 jobs untill i was offered full time at school .ok sir what do you do apart from bug the life out off ppl you piece of crap oh i forget your a rentboy aint you !!!!!!!!!!!!keep your nose out of my face you useless excuse for a human :loopy: :loopy: :loopy Now, now.... no need for personal attacks. I was merely confused about your job so enquired... no harm in that is there? Calm down in future. pretty_woman 05-02-2004, 21:44 Whatever I was replying to thread not you ok! Sidla 05-02-2004, 22:06 Please try and keep this on topic. Petty squabbles and insults are not welcome on this forum. Funke88 06-02-2004, 02:58 I really enjoy my job: I have my own office and nobody bothers me (much) I get on with what I'm doing with minimal interruptions. I miss out on all the hotel front desk gossip though but then again that's a good thing cos I don't get involved in any petty crap and office dramas. I get to play on the Internet whenever I want to without my boss breathing down my neck. Problem is that I have a 35 mile drive there and back. That's an hour each way everyday at 7 in the morning. The petrol my car guzzles is expensive too. Over 2 years I have listened to every book on tape in the library, every music channel possible and every crappy morning chat show on the radio. The pay is okay but money isn't everything. So, I do love my job but the drive each way every day is killing me. Do I stay or do I look for someting closer to home? My husband thinks I'm just too comfortable and that I am capable of better. Yes my job is gravy sometimes (easy) Should I aspire for something more rewarding with maybe a 10 minute drive? fnkysknky 06-02-2004, 03:51 I love my job, finsihed for dinner time so it leaves me all day to do what I want - looks like I'll be playing at lot of golf this summer :D duffman 06-02-2004, 07:39 1 Hour for 35 miles is better then my 50mins-1hour for 5 miles on the bus. IMO you should stay in the job, as long as you're happy keep going. you could go for a bigger challenge and more money but you may end up hating it after a bit wishing back your old job. jackthedog 06-02-2004, 07:50 Hate the work I currently do, but it's a stepping stone to better things. A way into the industry, a foot in the door and all that. Still depresses me though. Thank god for this forum... cazzaworld 06-02-2004, 09:46 I must be a rare breed. I go into work with a smile on my face. I really enjoy my job. It can be quiet at times, but I can cope with that. Its job satisfaction seeing kids faces light up with excitement. The staff are a great laugh, the customers are fine, even the management are a good laugh. The only downfall is the pay, but oh well its a small price to pay to be in a happy in your job. Oh and shock, horror the job is in Meadowhall. duffman 06-02-2004, 09:56 Where do you work cazzaworld? Sounds like the creche, only on the fact you mentioned you work with kids, I don't want another argument going on. If it is the creche do you still have the games consoles? the good thing is you are happy and if pay doesn't affect your life too much it's good. Got any jobs I wanna play on the games consoles:thumbsup: jackthedog 06-02-2004, 10:23 The only people I know who are happy at work are people in the caring profession; childcare, nursing etc. In that line of work the reward can be the satisfaction of seeing how you've helped people. My hard work is never seen or appreciated. It just goes into making whoever owns the company a little bit richer. Where is the job satisfaction when you never even see any result of your hard work? duffman 06-02-2004, 10:36 The same goes for me. I like the work I do, I feel like i'm (hopefully) making a difference, it's some of the management and the way things are run I can't get sometimes. Alot of the work (which can be really frustrating) goes unoticed, then we get councillors on our backs after they have been in the paper for something we do and they don't mention us (how does that make us look), although we get recognised for the work we do alot of it's internal or within select groups, so when we're out on the street getting major flack etc it get me that they don't know what we're doing. cazzaworld 06-02-2004, 11:13 Nah, I don't work in the Creche. I work in a 'kids related shop'. duffman 06-02-2004, 11:15 O.k just wonderd, sounds like you enjoy it though! fnkysknky 06-02-2004, 11:52 Don't want to rub it in or anything but loved my last job too (installing kids outdoor play equipment), in fact I'll be going back to doing something similar soon. It was great to see jobs finished and seeing the kids faces when they tried the equipment out for the first time. I used to work 8 hours everyday, no lunch break. All for less than minimum wage because i was 'learning a trade'. B*llocks! My favourite job was actually in Meadowhall, i now get a headache from the place but at that time i didn't. I used to sell pens at the stall within Debenhams and it was such great fun, the boss was great and i was made to feel valued. My opinion pon jobs is that the actualy job doesn't matter as much, it's who you work with and how well the boss treats the staff. Selling pens may have been a godawfully dull job but because it involved dealing with people (not always one who treat you like scum) i really liked it. The late nights that cause meadowhell to be a problem were a problem i agree but is did mean i could work after college without it seeming useless. Wages weren't bad too. The only reason i left was because i sat back and thought "In the last 12 months i've studied 3 a-levels, read lots of books, oodles of private study on things that interested me; what have i learnt the most about. I was mortified to learn the answer was 'Pens'. " I knew i had to leave right then. Not enough time in day. People i work with are great, and i stay for that. Close to where i live. Management are arseholes, pay rise asked for dec 2002 still not happening and will soon be asked to do extra work as we have just acquired specialist science status (which comes with extra cash but not for us) wonder if they will be suprised when we all say 'get stuffed' to them. 13 weeks holiday a year. Children are horrible. Not a challenge. I cannot claim anything during the other 9 weeks even though i am available for work and am paid no retainer by school.
