View Full Version : Casbah - announcement...
Confusion surrounded the Casbah this week as club revellers and gig goers found the venue to be closed.
Rumours have been rife about the reasons but Soundaloud wouldn’t like to report too much into the reasons behind the closure, as we’re sure the situation is still at a delicate stage. However former promoter Hadyn popped onto the Soundaloud Forums to let everyone know what the situation was.
Any gigs that were booked at the city centre venue are 99% certain to not go ahead although gigs organised by Brainwash promotions currently have a slight chance of finding a new venue according to Hadyn.
So the horizon on one of the city’s venues looks bleak this week. More news as we have it…

As far as I know she was only there for holiday cover. Definitely open again tonight though with a band on upstairs.
Nooooooo!
Will this be open this weekend?
Can't close the bah!
carcrash 03-11-2005, 22:50 I dont think the bar is closed but most of the upcoming gigs have been cancelled. The manager and promoter are out of the door. Pity really as brainwash have done a great job in getting live music on there over the last few months

Ok, a vague explanation of happenings at the Casbah at the moment... basically, myself (Haydn, Promoter) and James (Manager) are out the door. I couldn't tell you whether it's open tonight or tomorrow, and i can't tell you what the future plans for the place are; that's for the owner to decide. Any bands who have gigs coming up in the next couple of weeks, they're 99% going to be off. I'm going to be re-arranging some gigs at other venues, but the fast approaching ones are just too soon to sort venues for them all. Outside promoters who have nights booked, you're best off ringing the venue to see what's going on, or look elsewhere; hope you can appreciate that as i don't work there any more, i can't really sort stuff there. Same applies for DJ's.
A big thanks to all bands i've had down there, and big apologies for the inconvenience this has caused to those with things coming up. I'll do my best to help people get things sorted.
no55sammy1 04-11-2005, 02:55 i was in the casbah when the undertones played there, around 2 years ago. the best night/gig ive ever[no kiddin] been to . was at the leadmill gig not to long ago and although i had a good nite it didnt compare to the nite i and 4 friends had at the CASBAH that gig for me was stuff of legend.dont ever venture into the city center during the week due to work but i always thought the casbah downstairs would have become a proper in your face real venue.shame realy:confused: is there anymore downstairs basement bars,i cant think of any but i could well be wrong:thumbsup:
cellarhigh 04-11-2005, 13:44 Hi, I've just spoken to the venue
Its true, Haydn and James have gone (for whatever reasons) and personally I wish them good luck as they're great guys for the scene
The casbah though is not closing and they are going to try and put all the gigs on still. However for whatever reason they dont have contact details for the bands. If you have a gig at the casbah coming up please ring Julia on 01142756077 as soon as possible to confirm that you are playing - do not take the p*ss and ring up to confirm dates you're not booked on as other bands will turn up/phone up and they will probably not book you again!
goldenfleece 04-11-2005, 17:26 OH....was going to go down tonight for the basement disco bit...is that still happening?
muddycoffee 04-11-2005, 23:04 I have just spoken [ friday night ] to someone who has come out of the motorhead gig at the city hall, and apparently the casbah has active reps outside the city hall who are inviting people who still have their motorhead tickets for a free newcastle brown at the casbah tonight.
Maybe they are trying to attract a proper rock crowd again ?
fleshnblood 05-11-2005, 10:12 Hi,
yes i saw the active reps and it seems as though casbah is finally getting somewhere , there hasnt been reps out for the casbah in a while and as soon as the promotor goes for reasons we dont know they are everywhere?
looks as though they dont need him, mabe the bands havent got numbers for lack of commitment to the venue from various staff members?
Well i am going down tonight as i love the casbah and now it seems as though it has its act together it will be the club we all know and love. Im sure the inconvinience of the staff leaving/being dismissed will not a strain on the casbah as it has been here for years
thanks guys
:)
Casbah is great! Its such a random night out in there, you cant help but liking it.
er...have I got deja vu, but didnt this happen with the Casbah about a year or so ago....promotors given the shove, gigs cancelled?
Seems a tad fishy to me.
Agent Gypo 05-11-2005, 17:55 Argh! We were looking to put on a night at Casbah (NTA vs Dirty Cheese possibly), had a chat with Hayden too. Upsetting.
Yellowrose 06-11-2005, 13:01 It was open as usual Friday night ...

Sounds good
DaBouncer 06-11-2005, 14:04 Given the owners inability to keep management staff I'm not surprised this has happened.
I've never known him keep a manager for more than 6 months before sacking them for seriously poor and made up reasons.
Shame really cos it's on ly hurting the image of Casbah which is a decent venue.
any venue in this day and age that cannot have a website that is actually useful and up to date doesn't deserve anything.
fleshnblood 06-11-2005, 18:07 i called the casbah yesturday and aparantly they are on top of things
i talked to julia??
and there is nothing ''fishy'' about it
so dont worrie and they aint changing a think except getting better more commited staff members
:D
no55sammy1 06-11-2005, 22:01 i was in the casbah last nite and unlike you f i thought [after been drinking in the city center] there were more people in the casbah than i expected BONFIRE NITE should take place midweek and dabouncer if the casbah is open and givin people who go there like me a good nite out why should it concern us how many managers the owner he or she goes through. i know a guy who told me although this was 2 years ago [ownership may have changed] that in the 6 months that he was the cellarman at the casbah " you could not have a better boss""
nuromantic 07-11-2005, 12:24 Just to let you know - the Human League aftershow party @ The Casbah, booked for 8th Dec (commencing after the League gig at the City Hall), still looks on.....but I'll be posting details and a definite confirmation later.
Bands playing are "Only Human" (the UKs finest Human League trbute band - yes indeedy!) and "Schmoof" (Manchesters sexiest synth-pop act....ever). Plus 3 hours of DJ'd non-stop retro-synthpop electronica.
Expect a limited number of tickets to be on sale soon.
More info soon...

fleshnblood 08-11-2005, 16:45 Cannot wait!!sounds like a great night.
Its a shame some of you think the owner is letting the club down. i had a friend that worked at the casbah but she had to leave due to pregnancy not being sacked for ''poor'' reasons and i can say she 100% loved it although she did tell me that some staff like to take the p**s becasue they have such an easy going boss so how about just dont f**k them around? I happened tot alk to the owner a couple of years ago i dont know if they have changed owners now or what i dont think so seen as its reputation is still the best but yer the owner was lovley so i can say im glad the wapentake isnt here and the casbah is and im sure most people can back me up.
I own a bussiness and believe me its hard so you people who critisize the boss i can garentee you wont last 5 minutes in their place so cut them some slack not the staff!!!!
thanks guys
fleshnblood 14-11-2005, 09:06 hery guys just thought id tell u the old casbah is back!!!
ive heard the REAL d.j is playing every saturday till xmas
i know where ill be:D

WHY:confused:[casbah basement sat night:clap:  ]
DaBouncer 14-11-2005, 09:34 no55sammy1 To even ask a question like that you know nothing about club management.
Constantly sacking managers for no real reason and upsetting the apple cart has all sorts of knock on effects (i.e. Casbah closing on a weekend unexpectedly), as well as other effects.
However there wouldn't be any point in going into it with you since you obviously have no clue what it would involve.
You carry on regardless though ;)
no55sammy1 14-11-2005, 09:51 da bouncer sacking managers for no real reason, why would he/she do that, I AM SACKING YOU FOR NO REAL REASON:loopy: obviously da bouncer you keep company who like to tell you the truth:heyhey: anyway the casbah as been there along time, unless your peter stringfellow[r u]the casbah managment seem to do a better job than you or me in running a cool club period :D
no55sammy1 14-11-2005, 09:57 one more point DABOUNCER casbah closing unexpectadly on a weekend apart from sundays when its closed please tell me what you mean;)
DaBouncer 14-11-2005, 10:11 My word sammy you obviously haven't worked at the casbah to even have a clue what you're on about.
Fortunately I have and I have some insight ;) I also knew manyof the managers and know the 'reason's' they were given for their sacking, which I can categorically say were unfounded.
However none of them despite my advice wanted or could be bothered to take it to a tribunal.
They moved on to better jobs.
As far as I know in the last 2 years alone the Casbah has gone through 4 managers (probably more) are you telling me that each one must have done something so terrible that they warranted sacking?
I'm not dissing the Casbah as a venue because I like the place, it's just a shame it suffers upheaval in this way due to constantly changing managers.
You 'friend' who works (or worked) in the cellar may have said his bosses were good and I dont doubt it. However if you ask him again I reckon he'd have been on about the management of the place rather than the ownership.
fleshnblood 14-11-2005, 10:20 hi dabouncer what experience do you have in club managment ? to be so critical of the casbahs managment decisions:suspect:

Sorry I didn't feel I needed to justify myself to offer my opinion.
Safe to say I have experience though, that's all you need to be concerned with.
Please dont take my comments of being critical with mallace towards the ownership.
After all they have a successful venue which has been around for a long while, that obviously counts for something.
The venue is fantastic (IMO) I just feel the owners are letting themselves down a bit by constantly changing managers than run the place. It's to their benefit surely to have a bar with the same management who can see things progress than to keep changing them.
However this does not take away from the fact that the owners do havea great venue and have managed to offer it for so long.
no55sammy1 14-11-2005, 10:40 dabouncer you should know in this day and age talking about taking people to tribunals is dangerous talk,if your friends were sacked for no reason and did not take the owners to court against your advise .the truth is probably more like THEY WALKED:P and they were not sacked. you need to get your FACTS RIGHT dabouncer there are to many people like your goodself who talk B**LS**T in sheffield why did you leave or were you sacked for no reason? im still waitin for the answer to when the club closed at the weekend unexpectadly:thumbsup: or is that also just more dribble that you seem to talk:rant:

Which was posted at the beginniong of the thread.
I admit I do notknow if this happened, I am going on the info received. If it didn;t then you have my thousand apologies.
Did the previous management walk? Well you say yes they did, I say they were sacked. I'm not having a direct attack at you but you seem to be calling me a b******tter, who looks like they have more to hide?
I'm offering my opinion based on the information I have been given. My apologies if you don't like it. Although I'm not sure why you're arguing so hard, this is after all just a debate is it not?
If you look at the situation from an outside point of view and see that the Casbah has gone through so many management staff in such a short period, which would you tend to believe. Either way what does it matter?
So long as the club runs smooth, the music is great and the atmosphere remains the same the argument is neither here nor there. Again you seem to be taking my comments far too personally and I shall leave this thread here.
I have said what I wish to say and again I re-iterate that I bear the casbah nor it's owners no mallace I just offer my opinion (they can feel free to take it or not).
Feel free to have the last word since you appear so hell bent on doing so... knock yourself out ;)

Well Olga has retired now, but your comments are wholly unjustified. She ran the place successfully for 30 years. And it was a wonderful place in those days despite it's flaws. Saturday night there was often a queue to get in for 20 minutes.

Agreed. Wonderful place and will never be forgotten. Ah, the Q on Saturday nights was well worth the wait......a down to earth and very basic bar but it served its rock community so well.......

lol, I remember Olga telling the bouncers to ask us to stop dancing cos they didnt have a licence. They didn't get very far, the bouncer in question remembers that was the first time he set eyes on his future wife. She gave him the rods and carried on dancing. :hihi:
carcrash 14-11-2005, 11:30 Sammy, do you work for the cashbah?
You seem very keen on defending them. Oh and before you start on me, no I have never worked there, put gig's on there or done a clubnight there mainly due to the bad rep the owners have got.

Rumour mill capital of the UK !
Casbah's shutting down... according to every well informed taxi driver in this city !! I bet they've got tomorrow night's lottery numbers too!
Manager's sacked for no reason.... i'll bet ya my entire life's savings that people get the heave-ho for many a valid reason. People just cannot get sacked for "no reason".. the law is on the side of the employee not the employer. Do employees wake up in the morning and think, i'll sack the manager, don't need a reason.. i'll just do it and cause myself extra stress and work ? Can't think of anything better!!
Fact - The Casbah over seven years ago was an underground tip two foot deep in water with more plants growing there than the Winter Gardens. If the legendary Wapentake was so successful why didn't it carry on, just so all the rockers could drink NBrown and moan about the music. Someone came along with the foresight to give Sheffield back, something that was missing, a decent club with decent music, atmosphere. The upstairs bar was then a tanning salon and had to have major work done to make it what it is today.
Fact - The Wapentake didn't work then nor will it work today, 2005.. sooner everyone realises that, the better.
Fact - A promoter's job is to promote the club/events.. a promoter is as only as good as the previous night's turn out. No good having a BIG name if the venue is only 1/4 - 1/2 full. The promoter's job is to make the venue £££££, what's the point on having a gig where only a dozen folks turn up... (been in them shoes, it ain't good for anyone).
Fact - The Casbah is totally independent of any brewery.
Fact - Tell me anywhere on a Fri/Sat night in any city centre nightclub/venue where you can get in for FREE and stay until 2.15.. apart from The Casbah (door charge applicable from 10.30). Nowhere.
Fact - I work there.
Fact - Tonight (Friday) the Casbah will be rammed (AS USUAL).
Fact - i'm not really Ted Hughes.
goldenfleece 18-11-2005, 15:13 Fact - The Wapentake didn't work then nor will it work today, 2005.. sooner everyone realises that, the better. [/B]
The Wapentake was not working in its last year, thats true, but it used to work very well indeed in the 80s and first half of the 90's. No reason to suggest that it would not work again but in a new incarnation. But then the Casbah is as close to that 'new incarnation' as anyone can possibly be I guess...
As it stands now, I love it.......better it is the Casbah than was closed down and turned into a pound shop!!!
muddycoffee 18-11-2005, 16:04 Also the Wap closed because Olga retired. Not because it "Failed" I have some pictures of the place packed in it's final days.
