View Full Version : Ooops snapped off my 'v' SHsheff 03-11-2005, 17:35 Yup, broken the little clip things on the underneath. It's a laptop, 'else I'd go get a new keyboard. Anyone any ideas?? Thanks muchly. saxon51 03-11-2005, 17:39 Here, have mine V . Are the clips on the key, or on the keyboard bed? SHsheff 03-11-2005, 17:45 On the key. I've tried supergluing the remaining clips, but no joy. I now have to press the offending bit with a pen top. It's not good for fluency.. :( saxon51 03-11-2005, 17:48 Why not try the computer recycling places? They're bound to have a few unfixable laptops which can be cannibalised for spares. Can't help you with the contact details of these places though. Alternatively, do you have a spare, little-used key that you can swap over for the time being and stick a 'V' label on it? The ~/# key for instance. SHsheff 03-11-2005, 18:11 Ohhhhhkaaayyyy.....now I need instructions as to how to attach the key! I thought it'd be a simple case of pressing. Seems it's not so. Now, I have two keys unattached. Is there a technique? I can't get the other key back onto whence it came, either, so I'm obviously doing something wrong. Help!! :P Ps, thank you for your help! saxon51 03-11-2005, 18:23 Can you describe the shape of the clip(s) for us? SHsheff 03-11-2005, 18:37 Four clips: two pairs, two spaced fairly near to each other, the other two (the bottom ie nearest to me) being further apart. saxon51 03-11-2005, 18:57 Have PM'd you SHsheff. Draggletail 03-11-2005, 20:13 Why don't you substitute the 'v' key with the 'w' SHsheff? We'll all be wery understanding :D Sorry. I'll get me coat :suspect: saxon51 03-11-2005, 20:17 Then he/she would be typing like a German. "Ve hope Vednesday vin against Vatford at the veekend!" Draggletail 03-11-2005, 20:21 Hang on saxon, I thought it was the 'v' they couldnt use  Ghozer 03-11-2005, 23:41 You could ask around and look on sites like ebay etc for anyone who has a broken laptop the same model/make as yours, maybe pilfer the key/keyboard off them ?? ;) saxon51 04-11-2005, 16:49 Originally posted by Draggletail Hang on saxon, I thought it was the 'v' they couldnt use  True, but if the 'W' key is put in to replace the 'V'. and you hit the key that now says 'W' (when you want a 'W'), you'll get a 'V' Unless of course you can touch-type, in which case it doesn't matter....except you can't now type a 'W' as there's no key for it - because it's now where the 'V' used to be - so you'd end up typing; " hy ont ednesday in hen e play atford at the eekend?" :shakes:  :? beansforyou 04-11-2005, 17:51 Is it a bit like cheating with a Rubiks Cube? when you take all the square chunks off  Just don't write anything to Viscount Von ViggleVurcher about his Virginal Vestry in Ventnor and you'll be fine SHsheff 04-11-2005, 18:03 Ooh! Hadn't realised you'd all been talking in my absence. Thought the thread had died! Anyway, I've ended up sending the beast off for repair, probably a new keyboard. Turns out it's not possible to pull keys off from other places and hope they'll click into place 'cos the wee clips are too delicate to do that with and you end up with several unusuable keys :suspect: However, sharp-eyed readers will recall that the casing was previously damaged and I've been unsuccessfully looking for a second-hand/unuseable laptop to canibalise for months now. So I've turned this situation into an opportunity to get a 'new' laptop out of it. Even at the estimated price it's a far cry short of a new laptop to the same spec, so hey. Beats the hell outa stopping every time I wanted a 'v' to jab in the gap with a pen top, and the Sellotape covering over the gap in the casing was looking tatty... Btw, I'm a 'she' for those who don't know. And thanks for all the input! Jonothan Woss, the man who has trouble with his Rs Could it all be down to haemorrhoids :hihi: I think maybe I should retire to bed  |
