A good friend and I are planning to have a weekend break in a couple of weeks, I have one or two ideas but they've been done before. Anyone out there got any special places up their sleeves. We're looking at somewhere about 2 to 2 and a half hours drive max. Thanks:)

Depends what kind of weekend? I don't do quiet so not sure there, but Lake District or somewhere?

Otherwise:

Newcastle, went there exactly this time last year (infact, this date last year.. ) and it was quality.

Cheers GB, been thinking Lakes myself. We've both been before and really loved it . Newcastle sounds good though It's supposed to have a good nightlife, we want a bit of sightseeing too

If you're taking a lady friend, then all the sightseeing she needs is in Newcastles Metro centre :)

No way, my first date with my other half was to Blackpool and we had a right scream!!!!! Wonderful day. I think I might have managed to blag my way in to a private Bonfire Party...although it is Halloween fancy dress! Am just waiting on confirmation! You ?

I'd recommend Keswick in the lakes Its big enough to have a night life, lots of good places to eat and the beer, mostly Jennings is pretty good these days. SHMBO and I have been doing the weekend in autumn thing for 25 years (god that makes me sound old but we've been together since we were kids)

I've been to Bowness and enjoyed it so i reckon Keswick should be good, I just might try it. We fancy more of a relax with a night out , Blackpool has the night but not the other sorry B. No bonfire for me as yet , good luck with yours:thumbsup:

Have to agree on the whole Lakes thing. Me and the other half have been up about 3/4 times this year and loved it. (Enough to want to move there). We stay at Ambleside, pretty, fairly small, gets busy in the summer but still seems quiet. Some good food, the pub right on the Lakes edge is expensive but the food has been great whenever we've been there and the view is amazing. Its usually our treat of the trip. Theres also a really good Chinese on one of the main shopping streets and an Indian that does fairly reasonable set meals and the food was good.

From Ambleside you can drive to anywhere but theres also the ferry thats goes to bowness/windermere and lakeside if you don't want to drive. Don't miss Cars of the Stars in Keswick. The A Team van, KITT, batmobiles etc

Anywhere where they have a Jimmy Choo shoe shop. If it's a woman you're taking and you buy her a pair, she will do anything for you..............so a really good weekend then !!

Go on one of the bargain mini cruises fron Hull, they are BOGOF at the moment. Car parking is free at the port and a bus takes you to either Bruges or Amsterdam. We have just been and really enjoyed it.

I can get to my mum's within 2 hours, so that gives you everywhere between here and Cambridge

I like Nottingham & Cambridge, and Liverpool is do-able within your timescale too
