Myself and my husband are starting up our own businesses and are keen to do everything above board.

Can anyone recommend a good, dependable, reasonably priced accountant, that knows all the ins and outs of how to give as little money to the Inland Revenue as possible?

Thanks in advance for any help.

For the first few years we were in Business my partner did all the books himself. It took about an hour a day and half a day at the weekend. He then took them in to the Inland Revenue and got them checked over. We never had any trouble at all. When the business grew a bit and we were thinking of selling he took the accounts to a firm of accountatnts who charged very little as they had nothing to do apart from checking the adding up and rubber stamping them.

We had a couple of run in's with crap accountants when we started which prompted us to do it on our own. Just because they have managed to pass the exams don't ever assume that they are all competent and operate to the same level.

Accountants are not actually in business to save you money and point out wrinkles to save you paying too much tax. You are far better off looking at everything you do and every aspect of your business that you can and asking the Inland Revenue what the rules are regarding it.

Having said all that I wish you nothing but good luck with your business, you learn by your mistakes but it sure beats working for someone else.

Huge thanks to both of you, it's just what I needed. I have thought about doing it myself, but I do have two children, and the only time I get to work on the business is when they are in bed, so accounting would get left behind.

Cheers, my dears.

Da Bouncer posted about one ages ago. I think they give you free software to keep your accounts on. You could try a search or PM him if you wanted to know :)
