I heard a great story of an adder infestation in Todwick about 6 years ago.

A guy picked it up to show his mate this really odd snake in his garden. The snake bit his wrist, so he quickly moved it to the other hand while he examined the sting. It then bit his other wrist, so he threw it on the floor where it promptly struck his ankle!

Few round teh Aughton area. Near a woodland area between Aughton & Treeton and Fence so they probably come from there, only grass snakes though - do they count ?

According to 'The Natural History of the Sheffield Area' (1985) at that time Grass Snakes were increasing in the east but scarce in the west of the city (limited by altitude).
Check out the Sorby Natural History Society website if you're into wild stuff.

I've seen snakes in Greno woods/wharncliffe crags, some pretty big ones too.

We also had an Adder in our garden one summer, when I was a kid. The neighbour saw it slither through the hedge when he was cutting the grass.

I've seen grass snakes in High Green and Wharncliffe Woods as a child (or at least what my dad said were grass snakes - could have been venemous king pythons and I wouldnt have known any different)

You'd know about it if one bit you.. And so would your Undertaker (and I don't mean the wrestler).

There are a lot of Adders around the Cordwell Valley. You can often see their sloughed skins along the paths.

I also have them on my land, but I am 200 miles south of Sheff.

Seen a couple at KJS fisheries in Killamarsh, about 2 years ago. Both looked about 2 1/2 feet in length, both slid down the bankside right past me and into the water (on seperate occasions)

Don't say stuff like that. Snakes get a bad enough press as it is. There are no snakes in the UK that will kill anyone. An adder bite hurts but that's about it, for normal healthy people. Like a wasp sting.

Never seen one in Sheffield, but over here a couple of years ago a workman was clearing the garden of a house near me when I heard a huge scream.

We all ran to see what was the matter only to be confronted by a 7 foot poisonous Montpellier snake rearing up and hissing in a cobra fashion. We all ran home as quickly as we had run down to see.

I have now got used to seeing snakes, especially early in the morning in the summer when they warm up on the tarmac on the roads, you just give them a wide birth.

Its the spiders that I cannot get used to. I have never been a fan and hated UK house spiders when they ran across the carpet, but over here you have tarantulas and black widows to contend with. The good news is that they never come in the houses even though doors and windows are left open all the time.

Strangely the most dangerous creature over here is prevalent at the moment. It is called the processional Easter caterpillar. The walk round in long processions and live in cyprus and pine trees. If you eve get them on your property the only safe way of getting rid of them is dropping them in a container of fuel and setting it alight. The danger is with their hair which they release when alarmed; it can kill dogs babies and the old.

Killer caterpillars eh..... never tell you about these in the holiday brochures do they?

There are grass snakes and adders in Rivelin Valley but they are rarely seen. In the 1950s we regularly saw grass snakes in my dad's allotment (just above the playground) but the last one I saw there was in the late 1970s. According to my diary an adder was reported on Den Bank in July 1995.

A snake appeared in our bathroom one Saturday night at the end of last summer, frightened the missus half to death. I believe it was a corn snake which had escaped from somewhere. I was up until 4 in the morning trying to coax it back out from under the skirting boards. Never seen it since. For all I know, it could still be under there, living in the walls and under the floor. :o

when is the best time to go looking for grass snakes?

It was last summer and a warm week when I saw them, I still find it strange to see so many in one week when never come across any before!

there was an adder near the stream at padley gorge earlier this year, moving very slowly - could've been injures or ill, watched it (from a few feet away) for several minutes as it made its way into the long grass
