Three hundred new jobs are to be created in South Yorkshire after a call centre won a major contract to handle National Rail Enquiries.
Customer service company Ventura, based in the Dearne Valley, Rotherham, has secured half of the £100m deal.

The rest goes to giant rival BT, which will split its service between call centres in Bombay in India and Derby and Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the UK.

The work was awarded by the Association of Train Operating Companies.

Recruitment drive

A spokesman for Ventura said the company would handle most of the calls under the terms of the deal.

Fast-expanding Ventura already manages customer services for major employers, including Barclays, British Gas, Freeserve, O2, and the Department for Work and Pensions.

Ventura sales director Phil Telfer said: "This contract win alone is contributing towards the local economy through the creation of hundreds of jobs."

Just last May, it announced plans to recruit 1,000 more staff.

The company has four UK sites and a workforce of more than 4,000 people.

It's good news for this area, and also for rail users.

There were plans at one point to move Rail Enquiries to India - nice to see that they've seen sense... ;)

Actually they are - Ventura are operating two call centres for the NRES contract, one in Rotherham and one in India. The other company to get an NRES contract is BT, who will operate 3 call centres, one in Derby, one in Newcastle and one in India. So 2 out of the 5 sites dealing with rail enquiries will be in India.

Well, I hope that if I ever need rail enquiries, I get through to Rotherham.

Can you imagine asking someone in India what time the train to Birmingham is?
