Open the can. Pour into a bowl and smash them to death with a rolling pin. Place in a pan with a little mint sauce and heat gently, but do not boil. Having done that - serve with whateever you like - but best without ice cream or chocolate. Then again .... Chocolate. Dragon fox20thc 01-11-2005, 17:55  I wondered why I was getting through so many bottles. .. wait a minute there can't be booze in hendos. Can we have an official statement please? Lotti 01-11-2005, 18:11 I agree - mushy peas urk Never liked 'em, never will - in fact, will never try 'em again - the look of them makes me feel sick since I was in hospital chucking up bile which looked just like mushy peas :gag: HappyHoosier 01-11-2005, 18:30 Thanks, everyone, for the lesson in British cuisine. Mushy peas are not quite as exotic as I'd imagined. They sound yummy, although I generally try to avoid foods that resemble vomited bile. Thanks for the imagery, Lotti. I've already read the thread about breadcakes as opposed to baps and rolls, so I won't have to ask about that. Oh, and I now I know about, um, black dog. DragonofAna 01-11-2005, 18:34 Check the ingredients on a bottle of hendersons - you have garlic and alcohol. Told you. Personally I would prefer a pint of lager, but then - I'm not Japanese. Dragon robbie 01-11-2005, 18:38 chip shop mushy peas consist of: those dried peas you get at junior school some tablets of green colouring some water and microwave yum Andy 01-11-2005, 18:40 I was once on a course with a lad from (royal) Tombridge Wells. He ordered fish and chips for dinner one evening...and then asked why they had been served with guacamole :o Rich 01-11-2005, 18:52 Originally posted by fox20thc You obviously are neglecting to cover them in hendos Rich. But to be honest even with Hendo's I still imagine I would bawlk at even the sight of mushy peas :gag: Draggletail 01-11-2005, 18:58 My mum used to make her own - soak dried peas overnight with a tablet of sodium bicarbonate (I think) Next day, add salt, heat and eat :) They did not have the bright green colour of the ones bought in many chippies (artificially coloured) :nono: JoeP 01-11-2005, 19:11 Originally posted by Draggletail My mum used to make her own - soak dried peas overnight with a tablet of sodium bicarbonate (I think) Next day, add salt, heat and eat :) They did not have the bright green colour of the ones bought in many chippies (artificially coloured) :nono: Sounds like the receipe my mum used. The tablets looked like Steradent tablets - the effervescent denture cleaner thingies. They were a feature of many Sunday lunches.... The bright green ones are sort of....Chernobylish..... :) Joe hazel 01-11-2005, 19:12 I've got some ready to eat now, bought a packet of dried peas from Morrisons yesterday, soaked them in boiling water with the tablet provided, rinse, replace water and boil. Just follow the instructions on the pkt. Think the pkt was about 25p. Must be marrowfat peas. They are delicious and no green dye. You can get tthem now that only soak for 2 hrs. hazel burnttoast 01-11-2005, 19:23 Bachelors mushy peas .Cow pie .Hendo's relish. Real Sheffield grub:clap: Get thi eeard in:thumbsup: If tha dunt like Hendo's thart not fit to be a Sheffilder:hihi: :P Yellowrose 01-11-2005, 20:03 Mushy peas = Yorkshire caviar Whether Batchelors tinned, frozen from Morrisons, or steeped overnight and boiled up ... great! Dragon My son is coming home for Christmas and one thing he has already requested is Meat and Potato Pie with Mushy Peas and Hendersons Relish..... We will have a list of things he wants to take back with him and will be amazed when I tell him that according to what I have read tonight he won't be needing to take Hendersons. He will take the dried peas so he can do Mushies but will be most surprised about the Hendersons. He uses Soya Sauce a lot which is made by Kikkomans.... Same colour though. He has lived in Japan for over 20 years. dibsy 01-11-2005, 21:17 I used to have to buy hendo's to take back to Plymouth with me when I lived there for 3 years as there was no way that I could eat meat and potato pie and mushy peas without relish. No way at all:shocked: deano 01-11-2005, 21:26 Originally posted by Dragon Check the ingredients on a bottle of hendersons - you have garlic and alcohol. Told you. Dragon I checked the ingredients of a bottle of Henderson's Relish (sad I know?!:P) and it does contain alcohol, but it says Isopropyl Alcohol. Is this a weeker form of the stuff you get in beer?! As for mushy peas... I absolutely love them! I just dont like them when they have gone cold and they stick to the pan! :gag: Phanerothyme 02-11-2005, 09:05 Originally posted by Andy I was once on a course with a lad from (royal) Tombridge Wells. He ordered fish and chips for dinner one evening...and then asked why they had been served with guacamole :o I heard a variation on this - Peter Mandelson is getting down with the people of Hartlepool, and goes into a chip shop to strut his working class credentials - "Cod and chips once" - he points at the mushy peas, - " , and I'll have some of that lovely guacamole too please" Originally posted by wiseangel but it says Isopropyl Alcohol. Is this a weaker form of the stuff you get in beer?! No it's a poisonous form of the stuff you get in beer, it's usually used as a cleaning solvent. wiseangel 02-11-2005, 14:12 Originally posted by Phanerothyme I heard a variation on this - Peter Mandelson is getting down with the people of Hartlepool, and goes into a chip shop to strut his working class credentials - "Cod and chips once" - he points at the mushy peas, - " , and I'll have some of that lovely guacamole too please" No it's a poisonous form of the stuff you get in beer, it's usually used as a cleaning solvent. What do they have us all eating :gag: Joanl 02-11-2005, 15:28 Well, thanks to reading all these posts about mushy peas and meat and potato pie, I have had to go out in the pouring rain and force 8 winds and get the makings to do one.....I shall have to make do with my just out of date Hendersons though cos apart from not being able to buy it in Japan, I can't buy it here in Bournemouth either. Funny that.:( Mind it's not done me any harm yet, it must be the alcohol....it IS a preservative after all isn't it.) jesseeee 02-11-2005, 20:00 i love mushy peas :D hate real uns! But they actualy have to be mushy n not runny like water! n a bita mint sauce :P spot on! espadrille 25-08-2008, 06:46 Its amazing what we start a thread about!!! Funny that.:( Mind it's not done me any harm yet, it must be the alcohol....it IS a preservative after all isn't it.) oh, JoanL! *dismayed* we'll have to arrange a "care package" of emergency Hendoes for you. *thinks* there's a train direct to Bournemouth from Sheffield. I wonder if we could persuade the guard to take a bottle or two of Hendoes down with him, and drop it off for you at the station? (either that or I'll have to arrange a long-weekend there, and smuggle some contraband Hendoes in, in my suitcase lining for you!) *starts frantically searching the internet for Cheapo holidays in Bournemouth" LordChaverly 25-08-2008, 08:49 Its strange that you cannot get mushy peas in the US. I remember introducing my former American partner to these culinary delights on her first trip with me over here. From then on, she was hooked. Whenever I returned to the States after a trip over here I had to load up my cases with the stuff (always the Tesco's brand - nothing else would do). I was always worried that I would have a customs check at the other end. I wonder how much time in jail I would have got for mushy pea smuggling. Becky B 25-08-2008, 08:57 Mushy peas are wrong, just wrong :gag: Classic stereotype of the English overcooking their vegetables! Peas are best raw, straight from the pod  Donny Lad 25-08-2008, 09:17 Mushy peas are wrong, just wrong :gag: Classic stereotype of the English overcooking their vegetables! Peas are best raw, straight from the pod  For the above, read: "Mushy peas are right, just right." I love them mainly with fish and chips. Salt on the fish and chips, pepper on the mushy peas, and then a splash of vinegar on all three. Or with a good meat and potato pie, in which case I put Hendo's on the mushy peas. Talking of guacamole (as somebody was earlier), the first time I had Japanese wasabi (which is pale green in colour, and a kind of horseradish but hotter even than a good English mustard), I thought it was some kind of mushy peas, so I put a nice big dollop on the side of my plate with my sushi and took a good mouthful. It's the sort of mistake you only make once. It rendered everything else on the plate totally tasteless, and it felt like it would take a week for the skin to grow back on the inside of my mouth. princessfifi 25-08-2008, 09:35 Get a can of peas in juice. Dragon Tinned peas taste nothing like proper mushy peas- even tinned mushy peas. The real deal are the dried ones mentioned earlier. Update: Since I first posted this thread, I've found canned mushy peas in the small English imports section of a Fort Wayne supermarket. I don't like mushy foods in general but these were surprisingly good. I've also sampled two kinds of Hob Nobs, Jaffa Bars, a Dairy Milk,a Bounty bar, golden syrup, spotted dick in a can, salad cream, Heinz tinned beans (hold the toast), PG Tips tea and black currant Ribena. Oh, and I made my own parkin last year. Still waiting to taste an Irn Bru and, of course, Henderson's famous relish. espadrille 25-08-2008, 16:38 Update: Since I first posted this thread, I've found canned mushy peas in the small English imports section of a Fort Wayne supermarket.
