View Full Version : The generation gap... a degree of seperation.

One of my very good friends is someone who I work with; we get on very well despite the fact she is 10 years younger than me.

I am glad that we are friends and despite our differences I feel (& hope) that we have learnt an equal amount from each other. Certainly we get on very well.

I just wish I was more 'down with the kids'.

I have just watched a few episodes of Buffy and recognised some of the quotes she has used when talking to me.

This has happened before, when, too late I have heard a 'current' saying from the radio or a TV show after I have encountered it in real life.

Since when have I been seperated from the zeitgeist? Why did I not receive notification of our impending divorce?

Does anybody else feel this?

Do all people over a certain age attain the [Square] motif from their younger aquaintances due to a removal of ourselves from the edge of popular culture???

Amazing! She has the ability to quote from "Buffy", eh? How erudite she must be and how ignorant you must feel to fail to recognise the source of her wisdom... You have my deepest sympathy!

To be fair Deavon I know what exactly what you mean, but in reverse. (Stay with me, I'll make it make sense I promise!) ;)

I was laughing with a group of friends the other day when I said something daft in the style of Blanche from The Golden Girls. (yeah, sad I know) but found myself not only having to explain the reference, but also having to explain what The Golden Girls was. :o

I guess what I'm saying is that I feel I'm pretty much up-to-date with most things but it's scary when I remember things really clearly that my mates have no concept of.

Maybe I'm just scared because I'm another year older this week....

I rarely watch tv, seldom read the papers and never read magazines

The number of times I've had to have the latest buzz words etc explained to me I feel I'm from another planet!

Oh...hang on....I am.....never mind! Mystery solved

Now...does anyone know where the word numptie came from? :help:

Now there's a generation gap!!! (In reverse).

I was young when the golden girls were in vogue, but I was too busy watching 'Twin Peaks' to care! :D

Try explaining to your kids who the Bay City Rollers were or Take That even ;) guaranteed to make you feel the age gap :heyhey:
My 10 year old asked last night after watching Status Quo on Coronation St; "Are they a real band, were they famous"?? :heyhey:

How about when you start singing along to the radio when McFly come on singing Pin Ball Wizard and your kids are really impressed that you know all the words and you keep quiet about the fact that it was released about 20yrs previously!!!

We can't all socialise or work with the highest intellects society has to offer.

Some of us have to work alongside/befriend everyday people who enjoy 'popular' entertainment.

Nothing you have to worry yourself about. Save your sympathy for the person who has to remove your head from your arse.

Could you explain to me what actually happened in "Twin Peaks", Deavon? I feel I should like it, but every time I've tried to watch it, my head ends up hurting too much!

Cheers!

With regard to the topic, it's just a matter of keeping up with popular culture. I don't watch soaps at all :gag: but I do find myself watching/reading/listening to a lot of the stuff that seems to form the 'Zeitgeist".

Or perhaps I've just got too much time on my hands? :suspect: :D

As a matter of fact, Buffy is a fabulously well-written programme whose creator, Joss Whedon, is a master of wit and words, and the series can be understood on many different levels.

Watch it a few times and you might learn something.....

miaow!!!

one of my managers often attempts to be "down with the kids" and it really doesn't work.

since a lot of the Kids seem to be into stuff from the 70's and 80's it doesn't make that much of a difference anyway!
