DrownedinSound presents:

GRUFF RHYS – http://www.gruffrhys.com/

Gruff Rhys shouldn't require much introduction. Not only has he fronted Welsh legends Super Furry Animals (who are currently on hiatus) for 17 years, he's lately been responsible for some supremely innovative solo records and unlikely collaborations. 2007's 'Candylion' was a huge critical success, while the following year's collaborative Neon Neon project saw his music enter an entirely different, disco-oriented realm. Switching things up again last year, he released 'The Terror of Cosmic Loneliness' with Brazilian musician Tony da Gattora as well as a film, 'Separado!'. On the day of this gig, he will release his third solo album, 'Hotel Shampoo' - the title taken from a recent sculpture he made using a staggering assortment of complimentary toiletries collected during his many years of touring (see http://youtu.be/kZLUS7rnzFQ).

+ Y NIWL – http://www.yniwl.com/

This wonderful instrumental surf-rock quartet (who comprise members of Welsh indie royalty Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci and Topper) will first perform material from their recent self-titled debut before taking to the stage with Gruff as his backing band. A real treat is in store, both times.

"The drummer’s a mutant metronome, the bass player walks like a panther and the guitars bend and twist their way into your face until you’re dancing like a teenage weirdo.” - SWN

“Conjuring up sounds reminiscent of the The Chantays, Dick Dale and the Del-tones the foursome that comprise Y Niwl have put their own spin on proceedings, and in doing so bring guitar based surf well and truly to the present day.” - Addict Music

“A big malted glass of valve amps, dust-infused organ and live taping sans overdubs." - Drowned in Sound

Really good gig last night... thought Gruff was excellent, and Y Niwl did a great job as backing band.

Shame about the idiotic heckler though - what a git. :|

It was great to finally hear Skylon live. Thought the loon was going to jump off the balcony at the end but he was escorted out of the building before he could cause any more trouble.

Ha! I thought there were two hecklers. There was one downstairs too... he tried clapping out of time to all the songs, and shouting about jumpers. :o

Heard Skylon before when he toured the Candylion album - it's makes more sense than on the album. Last time he did it dressed as a pilot, in an airline seat. Brilliant!

It was quite a jumper!

Glad you enjoyed the show. Unfortunately, as someone at City Hall pointed out, it appeared a couple of people thought they'd bought a ticket for the Last Laugh comedy club and not a pop concert! Nevermind.

By the way, if you're interested in what we (the promoters) have coming up in Sheffield, check out http://drownedinevents.tumblr.com for listings - of particular note is Efterklang next Wednesday, amazing band who'll be premiering their recent collaboration with director Vincent Moon before a live performance. It's at the Queens Social Club, too, which is an exciting venue: http://www.last.fm/event/1709001+DiS+presents%3A+Efterklang. Cheers!

the heckler was not TOTALLY uneducated as at one point he shouted out "super furry animals" which was the most bizarre wrong thing i could imagine. an educated heckler? it made no sense!!!

awesome gig. I went to see Jonny at the harley on sat (with euros childs from gorkys) and I told him that he, along with gruff and simple kid, the best songwriter of the last 20 years. i told gruff the same thing after the gig and bless him he gave me a big manhug. best moment ever. :hihi:

That was what confused me the most, as I had a seat near them - they were overjoyed at him playing 'Skylon!' for the encore so they were obviously fans... just with a really odd way of showing appreciation for their hero ("You're ****ing amazing!" was slurred, loudly, at one point).

Glad you enjoyed Jonny - Euros and Norman are the loveliest guys ever.
