View Full Version : Diwali - Festival of Lights! modern-retro 31-10-2005, 08:58 This Sikh/Hindu Festival is tomorrow. Anyone know of any events to celebrate? owdlad 31-10-2005, 09:20 I often wonder why Sheffield doesn't have the same celebratory lights as Leicester, where the lights are wonderful. Bandylegs 31-10-2005, 09:47 Originally posted by owdlad I often wonder why Sheffield doesn't have the same celebratory lights as Leicester, where the lights are wonderful. Probably because there are fewer Hindus/Sikhs/Jains in Sheffield. I believe Sheffied's population is about 2% Hindu and Sikh whereas Leicester's is about 20%. Leicester's celebrations are reputed to be the largest outside the Indian sub-continent and, having seen them in previous years, they are pretty spectacular! I'm tempted to have the day off tomorrow to go and see them! owdlad 31-10-2005, 10:17 Originally posted by Bandylegs Probably because there are fewer Hindus/Sikhs/Jains in Sheffield. Thanks for that, I agree with you that it's worth going down to Leicester just for the lights......go on have a day off. ;) ybother 31-10-2005, 10:44 i live near leicester so will def go this time to the celebrations modern-retro 31-10-2005, 10:47 I went to Leicester last year, it was very good. Just hoping for somewhere a bit nearer this year. Bandylegs 31-10-2005, 10:55 To (mis)quote another religious source, Get thee behind me, owdlad! Right now I need very little encouragement to have a day off! (Wasn't it Oscar Wide who said "I can resist anything except temptaton."?) I've just looked at the Leicester City Council website and I figure I can get away with only a half day off! http://www.leicester.gov.uk/your-council--services/regeneration--culture/arts-services/festivals-and-events/diwali-2005 Hmmm. I'm not a big fan of Indian sweets but my mouth is watering at the thought of some spicy, savoury goodies! Maybe I should check the train timetables... owdlad 31-10-2005, 10:59 Gowan gowan gowan, you know it makes sense :P fragrantlion 31-10-2005, 21:48 Diwali celebrations will be held on WEDNESDAY 2nd NOV at the Hindu Samaj, 21 Buckenham Street, Sheffield. S4 7JQ It will start at 7pm until about 10pm. This is the Gujarati function and should involve lots of food and festivities. I have never been (having only been in Sheffield for 4 months) but am told it is a very good night. I'll be there with my wife (she's the Scottish looking one) and our wee boy and girl if any of you turn up! spicey 31-10-2005, 21:51 Why are they held on Wednesday (new years) when diwali is tomorrow? kall_sheff 01-11-2005, 09:18 diwali is today ,we are celebrarting in darnall at sadan (side of railway track) Bandylegs 01-11-2005, 09:45 Originally posted by owdlad Gowan gowan gowan, you know it makes sense :P OK. you've convinced me! Well, the sun is shining and I've done most of today's work so I figure I deserve some fun! spicey 01-11-2005, 09:51 Originally posted by kall_sheff diwali is today ,we are celebrarting in darnall at sadan (side of railway track) the side of a railway track? literally? Oh, Happy Diwali to everyone, hope its a nice bright one, at least the sun is shining  Talmid 05-11-2005, 16:35 yes it is unfortunate that Sheffield does not have a bigger Sikh and Hindu population as both communities have brought a spirit of enterprise to Leicester... both communities also seem to be peace-loving and willing to co-exist without trying to convert members of other cultures. Veman 18-05-2007, 15:24 i def agree, i'm HP (hindu Punjabi) originally from london. Wondering where the other Hindu/Sikh poeple are? Veman 18-05-2007, 15:39 .....................................
