I bought a 4 wheel drive car 2 years ago and paid £5,000 for it. At the time 4 wheel drive cars were seen as evil, satanic polluters that should be taxed to the max. Therefore prices at that time dropped. Today my evil polluting car is worth £3,000 more than I paid for it cos the last 2 winters with the high snow-falls have ensured that the 4 wheel drive is in high demand.

What was once seen as the worst vehicles in soceity with "greenies" wanting to ban them has now become the hero of society - with people crying out for 4 wheel drive help on the radio and on websites. 4 wheel drive owners are the ones who are keeping this country going at the moment - Perhaps they deserve a car tax refund ????

There are and always will be people who think 4x4s are evil, you did the right thing and ignored them.

Thumbs up to you. I've had a Land Rover for years now, and put up with the planet killer names I've been called.

Now all these people want me to give them lifts!!

My 4x4 is buried under about 3 ft of snow. Hubby reckons he's digging it out later but that remains to be seen!!!

I enjoyed watching a couple of them last night. The drivers obviously thought that 4WD overrode the laws of Physics.

Great things in this weather if you know how to drive one though. You don't even have to buy one that makes you look like a complete plonker either:)

My O/H has been out in the 4x4 this morning doing shopping for us and the neighbours.

What 4x4 is it? I'd be interested to know what vehicle has appreciated in value by £3K when the whole motor market is suffering!

I have never heard anybody claim that 4x4s are evil, it doesn't make sense to apply such a description to a piece of metal and composite materials. It's the people that drive them that are evil.

(Only joking)
:hihi:

Seriously though, it's makes no more sense to complain about 4x4 drivers as it does rear wheel drive drivers, or front wheel drive drivers. A friend of ours has a little Suzuki which is a 4x4 car, and is essential for her to get out in all weathers because of her job, and I've even heard her complain about "4x4 drivers". I guess when people refer to "4x4 drivers" in derogatory terms, what they are really referring to is large status SUVs.

Yes but wanting to go and look at a baby hardly qualifies as an emergency.

I'm due to give birth within the next few days. I will probably have to rely on our 4 by 4 to get to hospital. It would be my luck to find the roads impassable anyhow. A 4 by 4 can cope with snow better than a normal car, but it can't drive over the top of them if they are stuck and blocking the road.

I agree, for about 7 days a year a 4x4 is the correct vehicle to have for most people.

it may only snow 1 week of the year though . driving a 4x4 paying extra insurance, tax and running costs dont really add up to us

My 2 wheel drive car costs me £20 per year to "tax" and was much cheaper to buy than any 4 wheel drive on the market.

I'd spend money on winter tyres and wheels or even wheel socks before I'd go down the route of 4 wheel drive.

Fair enough if you live half way up a mountain or similar, but very few of us do.

But if you want to waste money on an uncomfortable cross country vehicle or on an overpriced status symbol so that you can sit in the same queue as all the other 2 and 4 wheel drive cars, then please do. The more money you pay to the exchequer in tax and duty, the less they'll want from me.

Also many of the comments on popular car forums seem to indicate that a smaller lightweight car with winter tyres is just as good as a 4x4.

As the OP stated many 4x4's have seen prices rise over the last year though

If its a subaru 4x4 sure.. it might be slightly greener than say your Range Rover, Jeep Cherokees, etc, but for the most part arent needed if you use it to commute in the city.

If you use it because youre a farmer or work on sites that dont have proper road access then so be it. For the majority of their owners its about status and not use.

I'm not a 4x4 hater at all but we did have a good laugh at one earlier that couldn't get up our road. We stopped laughing when he nearly hit both ours and our neighbour's cars though!

Certainly wouldn't turn my nose up at a nice 4 wheel drive car.... it wouldn't be a landy or anything like that though, oh no, I can think of a few more fun 4wd cars :D

In truth, unless its speed combined with 4 wheel drive your after, you cant really get much more fun than a well set up Landy... of all the 4x4's on the market, the trusty Landy really is a 'go anywhere' vehicle. :)

I've always driven a 4X4, it's good in deep snow but doesn't stop any easier on ice like some drivers think :loopy:

Interestingly, i have a little Nissan Micra with winter tyres fitted...Today i have upset all the 4x4 drivers as it can get up snow covered steep roads they can't, in fact it's been unstoppable
