View Full Version : Are you Made in Sheffield?

A conversation I had with a friend the other day left me with a wonderful phrase.
"people are forged in Sheffield"

Neither myself or my friend were born or raised in Sheffield but outlying districts in South Yorkshire and we were talking about the characteristics of the other towns to help a young lad from Austrailia understand the area a little better.

Barnsley - hanging on to coat tails
Doncaster - drained and lethargic (where my friend is from)
Rotherham - confused.

Do you think this is the case? Do you think you are 'made' in Sheffield? Whether you are born and bred here or just brought here by circumstance?

I've been here in Sheff for about 23 years now and am 100% Sheffielder, I'm so glad I moved here at 4 or 5 years old and picked up the accent! I moan about Sheffield sometimes, but it's the best city on earth.

I'm sheffield through and through. I've been to other cities and lived in one or two (not on a permanent basis) but none of them feel 'right' to me.

I've lived in rotherham all my life and yet i guess because i live on the border i'm closer to sheffield. I'm still confused though

Not born in Sheffield but lived here since the age of 4 and it probably took about 5 years to totally get rid of my terrible brummie accent.

I was born in Burton on Trent and lived in Tamworth for the first 4 years of my life. Since 19 though I've moved around loads and my accent has suffered as a result. Blackpool, Toronto, Bristol and back to Sheffield in the space of 9 years. I think I now have a 'student' accent. lol

jackthedog
05-02-2004, 10:34
Ugh, the student accent. My mates who are studying elsewhere in the country always come home every few weeks with this accent. It takes em ages to get their real accents back, and then term begins again and they go straight back into it! Aghh!

No offence, like :)

Pauly
05-02-2004, 16:18
Lol.....none taken at all. I'm starting to dislike the 'neutral and rather poncy' student accent myself. Working with a north yorkshire-bred plumber all day is starting to curb it back towards broad sheffield now so soon it might be gone. My accent is one of those that changes depending on where I am and who I'm talking to so it could even change from day to day. Weird eh.

I would say that anywhere you happen to live for a long period of time would 'forge' your future. I wouldn't think that assigning specific words to cities could be too accurate - it's like saying all foreigners are scum or something - very sweeping generalisation.

Born in Jessops Hospital way back in 1965. I have lived in Norfork Park, (brilliant place for youngsters in the early seventies, plenty of grass and open spaces, plus lots of other kids to knock about with).

Also lived in Crookes, Commonside, Walkley, Loxley and now sunny Middlewood.

I worked in Manchester for 5 years and thought that the people there were great (mostly). Also worked in Leeds, people there were t*$$£!s (mostly).

Once heard that Sheffield has the largest number of ex graduates that have stayed on in any city after leaving uni. Can anyone out there verify that ?

I was born in oughtibridge before WWII,but I was brought up in a prefab in scraithwood drive, and went to shirecliffe school.I got the usual miserable education, that the working class were given back then, and I remember a middleclass woman teacher telling us poor kids, that we were being given only enough education to become steelworks labourers,[This with a sneer on her face].I eventually made up for it by getting my education in the regular army.I thank God that I left England and came to Canada, where I recently retired as a senior nursing officer.----Mike Turner.

Cue the boring lifestory:

Was born in the Northern General Hospital and grew up in Sheffield. Presently, I'm studying in Southampton, but I tend to get very homesick from time to time as I don't get back all that often. Having stayed in Southampton for nearly two years now, I'm finding it very different to home.

Sheffield truly has a distinct character, vibe, abience; call it what you will - it definitely exists and we ain't imagining it.

And no, I haven't developed a poncy student accent. I still keep my ideolect - I'm a Yorkshire lad and proud, despite being the butt of everyone's jokes around here. Funnily enough though, I know a Sheffield girl studying at Nottingham and she speaks with a very strong southern accent now... bizarre.

Yeah I'm made in Sheffield too but I moved away at 10 and have now lost most of my accent due to loving in the poofy South (guernsey actually!). I still pronounce stuff with the low 'u' sound and don't say 'barth' or 'grarse' fortunately so people can tell I'm not too muhc of a southerner!

I think that every city stakes their claim on that fabled prize - denied by those who hated university life, and revelled at by those who loved it.

Personally i thought it was Bristol due to the strength in post-higher education employment, but at end of the day - be proud of your own city i guess!!!

Dear theonanathe. With regard to the southern English peoples pronouncing of certain english words, and the use of the long A.I believe the reason is because of the proximity of France, and the influence thereof. It was an18th century affectation started by fops and upwardly mobile snobs who wanted to distance themselves from their peasant relatives. Lately I have noticed that northern people are gradually adopting the Cockney glottal stop.I suppose this is the influence of TV.

I was born in Nether Edge, grew up in Dronfield Woodhouse, moved "daan saaaf" when I was 14 but came back up to Sheffield to study and then stayed, so I consider Sheffield my home more than anywhere else.

It really is true what they say - people are friendlier up north, and Sheffield is a lovely city. It's kind of like a big village really, and most of the people here are lovely. And it must be the only city in the UK where grown men call each other 'love'. Priceless!

I'm now moving to bonny Scotland in the next few weeks to take a new job, so at the moment I'm looking at Sheffield through rose-tinted glasses. I'm really gonna miss this place and all its little quirks!

Sheffield was truly blessed in February 1963 with the arrival of a scrumptious, little baby girl born at home to her proud parents in Intake (well, to be honest it was a bit of a shock as they already had 15 month old twins but that's another story..)

Sheffield then suffered a short deprivation of her outstanding beauty when she moved to live in London for 5 years in 1985, triggering a massive increase skyward in the suicide rate of the male population. Male hearts could be heard breaking from Bradwell to Bradway and all places inbetween.

She is now back and settled in the grateful community of Woodseats where she can be seen in local shops, restaurants and hostelries radiating happiness, warmth and sunshine to its grateful inhabitants. She has even produced two little girly beauties of her own to help make Sheffield a prettier, sweeter and more lovely place.

I was born in Sheffield in 1961.
I lived in Attercliffe, Pitsmoor and I got my 1st house at Norton Lees.
I then moved to Meersbrook and in 2 weeks time, hopefully to Crookes.
I have learned to appreciate Sheffield much more as I have matured as I can see the positives of the City now, compared to other cities.
The countryside location is the main selling point for me and the relatively low crime rate for a city

from an original idea conceived in Beighton.......

arrived screaming on the 13th of February, 1969 in Jessop hospital.....

lived in Beighton for 14 months, then moved to Hackenthorpe when the twins arrived, back to Beighton in 1978, where I remained for the next nine years, spent three happy years as a student/layabout/scruffy bag in Manchester, but the call of home was too strong, have been back in Sheffield since 1990, living in Beighton ( a year), Crookesmoor ( 4 years), Gleadless (9 months), Meersbrook (9 years) and now in Longley.....

wherever I go, I never describe myself as 'British', or 'English', I'm proud to say I am a Yorkshireman, and more specifically, a 100% cast, forged, stamped, tempered, ground and polished Sheffielder, you can see the shine from miles away!

Proud to be a Yorkshire lass, always tempted to broaden my accent when speaking to lah-di-dah southerners or "posh" people!

I find Yorkshire people very friendly, and yes, it is very very hilly, but it keeps us fit, and we will never be flooded!

I was born in Liverpool and brought up in Devon so i guess that makes me confussed before I ever got to Sheff. Like so many I came to study and never left.
Been here since '85 but was asked recently by a Sheffielder "Are you settling in okay?" The insularity made me smile but after 20 years maybe I am still an outsider.

I was forged in sheffield and I lived down the cliffe infact my grandad once told me that they found me under the big 250 ton drop hammer wrapped in a towel the stork got lost so he dropped me there. I would think that makes me a sheffielder through and through to this day I have wondered if the stork ever had is feathers burnt when he landed on the big furnace lol. I was a very big baby when I was dropped I think my weight was something like 9lb mind you I am still a fat bugger now I weight about 17 stones. all I can say is the stork must have drank some stones ale to carry me

Born and raised in Tinsley. Done my time in the steelworks before they went so I reckon forged in Sheffield truly applies.
I still live in the East of Sheffield and wouldn't move out of this wonderful city for any amount of money.

Born and raised in Sheffield (Jessops). Parents are from Jamaica. Both came over here with their families in the mid 60's just before they were teenagers.

First lived in Heely and then we all moved to Woodseats just before my younger bro was born. Lived there most of my life. Parents are still there. Now in Firth Park via Crookesmoor!!

Coming to Sheffield soon (as a newcomer)... Is Sheffield cosmopolitian enough to accept "outsiders"?
or do you have to be English?
How broad minded can Sheffielders be, or must the entire UK be racist against Americans?
Can you UK people know how TIRED I am in the UK of hearing "are you here on holidays?"
Hoping that Sheffield will be different...

I only registered on here yesterday but this thread is very close to the bone at the moment. I'm born and bred in north Sheffield; Lane Top and Longley/Shirecliffe. I moved to London (a fool in love!) last October and I miss Sheffield so much. I've tried living in different places twice in the past and I simply can't do it. I'm not from a close family and don't have masses of friends but there's something about that place that just keeps calling me back.

There is something in the analogy of being "forged" in Sheffield. I really feel deeply connected to it, as though I am part of it as it is a part of me. Even though I've never worked in any of our traditional steel or cutlery areas I still feel it in my bones. I've a feeling I'll be back before too long.

Ah'll shurrup nah.... soft bugger :)

I was born in Liverpool, have lived in Lancaster (Uni) and in London (Fun!), but Sheffield is a great place to live in and the people (generally) are not as in ya face as many of the northern towns such as Manc/Pool/Leeds.

And the Peaks/Derbyshire is never far away which is a bonus!! ;-)

I was born in Derby, and lived in the same Derbyshire village in the lower Erewash valley/Trent basin until I was 18 - when my family crossed the border to live in Nottinghamshire, but only a mile away. I then lived in Nottingham, then Duffield (Derbyshire), followed by Ollerton & Edwinstowe (both Nottinghamshire) before moving to Teesside for a couple of years, after which I returned to live in mid-Derbyshire town, and then Derby.

I moved to Sheffield nearly 20 years ago, and never regretted it. I'm still a Derbyshire lad at heart, and I could never consider myself a Yorkshireman, but my adopted home is this wonderful city of Sheffield.

I was made in London, and have lived all over the Kentish-Man side of the county.
Incidentally, someone thought I had a London accent, but I think it's more of a west Kent accent.

:)

P.S: Northerners may be wondering what the difference between the two types of people are from Kent - here. :) (http://www.bbc.co.uk/kent/places/features/manofkent_kentishman.shtml)

I'm neither, I was born in London.

P.P.S: On that link, I'm not far from the place that 'Paddyshire' mentions, nor am I million miles away from Alan Pitt's home area.

P.P.P.S: I was born in Sidcup but spent all my life living in Welling... ...father is from Barnehurst, am I a Kentish Man or a Man of Kent?
Paddysheridan

Just a footnote: That poster's first line suggests that Sidcup and Welling are a million miles away, this is untrue, even though that line may have you thinking it!

jauntyone, I was born and bread in sheffield. I think the real sheffelders are kind, helpful and generous.
I am now living in Doncaster and I find people here totally the opposite from sheffield people

Good to here you are still proud of sheffield, even though you now live in canada.

I visited canada a few years ago, it was a lovely place and the people were really nice.

While touring round ontario we came across a road sign, which we took a picture of, it read Sheffield, what a pleasent site.

I live about 30 mins away from there. It was weird seeing the sign for the first time. Not as big as the proper Sheff though. I think i counted 10 houses and 2 churches all in all. the people are nice and friendly here. where abouts in sheff are you from?

I was made in Inverness, born at Nether Edge in 1966, and lived on Sandford Grove Road until I was 6, then in Ecclesall for 12 yrs.

Left in 1984 for Paris, initially a 3-month stint, but I stayed for 8 yrs, then uncamped to London at end of 1992 for 8/9 years, including a one year mind-blowing RTW trip.

Landed in Mexborough (:gag:) for 6 months whilst I had my first child and now Hoyland.

How the mighty fall hey? :hihi:

Sheffield is very special to me, and over the years I have met many people on mu travels who have said very positive things about the place, which have endeared me to it. I have to say comparing it to Paris is rather unfair, but it does have a spirit of its own which is much more laid back. And the people are sooooo much nicer
