After 3 months of dealing with a "rogue trader" and losing £11000 to him we have found a great builder by a chance meeting.

I met him at a party yesterday. He came today, evaluated the job, came back this evening with a Grrreeeat quote and contract (signed too!) and he starts the work on Monday. He even gave us a time for completion which was excellent. To top it off he has done a report for us about the previous builder and will go to court with us!

If anyone wants a builder with a good reputation (he has done work for various hotels, MacDonalds, Wimpy, Meadowhall and has teams all over England. Been established since 1978.) Then they are:

RGS builders

231 Hemsworth Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S8 8LP

If anyone wants to give him a call, tell him Bonny sent you. (no I'm not on comission, just fed upof dodgy builders and want to share the news of a good one as there are so many bad ones)

Thanks very much for the info Bonny. That could be very handy to a lot of people I'm sure and I'll certainly note the name down in my phone book as I will hopefully buy a house in the near future.
So, thank you!

If you only just met him at a party, how can you be so sure he is a great builder?

I'm sure he's enthusiastic and everything, but until he has actually done the work to a satisfactory standard, you can't really be sure that he's a good un, can you.

We've been using Alan Roddis for years, he is very good, however he takes he is pretty popular and so it takes a while to get him around to do the work.

If you always make sure you get a written quote with a breakdown of the work on it, and how much everything will cost, then sign a contract, you should be fine.

Never just get any old builder, and ask for examples of previous work they have done in the area if you are worried. Most importantly, never hire a bald bloke in his forties called Sam.
